Written and directed by Julie Dash
Starring Taral Hicks, and with a brief appearance by Sam Rockwell, this short celebrates the unexpected musical gifts which the subway can give. In overlapping duets between a saxophone player (Kenny Garrett), accompanying first a gospel singer, and then a Jewish singer, one finds the subway to be an underground Carnegie Hall - whether the music is born of the grief wrought by experiencing the death of a parent in public, or produced by the heart-rending lament of a Hasidic man's (Dan Rous) unexpected emotional outpouring.
Subway Stories: Tales from the Underground is a film made in 1997 and produced by Home Box Office for television. It began as a contest among New Yorkers who submitted stories about their experiences within the New York City Subway. HBO picked ten of the stories and cast mostly well-known or accomplished actors (such as Denis Leary, Bonnie Hunt, Rosie Perez and Bill Irwin), and ten well-respected directors (such as Jonathan Demme, Ted Demme, Abel Ferrara, Craig McKay, Julie Dash, and Bob Balaban).
I cried like a baby when this aired. I was 12 and my mom had been gone since I was 10. Hell I’m crying now and I’m almost 40 😩
She sung the mess out that song!!! I felt that in my soul
Me too. I love when someone has that ability.
@@JessBecause77 yes!! 🙌🏾
Crying like hell, this was my little sisters favorite song.. I can't tell you how many times we sat around rewinding the tape and singing this. I just lost her and this song has broken and picked me up... REST EASY MY LOVE
Kyng Arthur I NEVER SAW THIS, SO DO YOU MIND EXPLAINING WAS THIS LIKE A 90s SERIES OR MOVIE OR SUM?
It was one of those hbo shows called subway stories, so it was like 5 short films in one. It was real good
By far one of my favorite songs. Sung amazingly. Great scene. I cry every single time!
Kyng Arthur I lost my big sister last year, she lovedddd this song too.... funny how the same thing brought 2 different people to the same place.... I’m sorry for your loss. Energy never dies always remember
❤❤condolence!😥😥
Her voice, her tears, the flowers blowing in the breeze then the breeze flows through her coat as her heels click on the platform...Priceless...
I never seen this before was her mom sick did her mom die?
@@Mimi89_7 yes
never heard of this movie but lord can she sing.
Subway Stories I believe and she played Kisha in Belly.
Loved this special, and this was my FAVORITE scene
She sure can
Subway Stories was phenomenal.
The iconic Taral Hicks!! She
And her sister have also been in a few Tyler Perry Plays.
I watched this as a kid. It is one of my favorite things and the only skit from Subway stories I haven't been able to forget 20years later.
Ashley Biviens-Parker Me too #Facts
Ashley Biviens-Parker yes me too I use to catch it late night ... I’m 38 now n yes that was 15-20 years ago !!!!!
Ashley Biviens-Parker so true
Ashley Biviens-Parker YES!!!!! I Don’t know what made me think of this but I did just now. There are some things that just leave an impact that is unexplainable.

She's so underrated

Indeed... she’s a teacher now.
Facts!
And under appreciated
I 1ST SAW THIS WHEN I WAS 14 I STILL 2 THIS PLAY THIS SCENE 2HEAR TARAL HICKS SING LIKE A SONG BIRD 8 JUST FINISHED PLAYING IT AND ITS GOING ON REPEAT 1 MO TIME😚😘
Taral Hicks is so underrated!! Her sister can sang too!! One of my favorite songs in the world!!! And the whole scene itself it's just perfection... it didn't feel staged or scripted.... well done by the cast! The Jewish guy and the saxophonist at the end was a smooth touch to a wonderful ending...
Yep agreed. And love the way the Jewish guy and the sax player give each other a polite and subtle little nod/bow, of two very different musicians acknowledging each other before the train blocks their view
Well said.
Holy shit! I looked up “C”’s girlfriend. Apparently, the actress Tara Hicks is famous for this scene. Um. This is EXACTLY how I FEEL TONIGHT. ❤️🩹💐🙏🏽
This is the only time that "underrated" is applicable.
Soooo Underrated! She IS the culture! ❤
Her singing brought me to tears, you can feel the pain and soul. Her voice is so moving. Taral Hicks is amazing.
I still feel the power of God in her voice everytime. It chokes me up every single time. She is so under rated.
She sung Mahalia Jacksons song like she wrote it. That song gave me chills. Not only that she was singing to her dying mother who passes as soon as the song ends and she drops the phone. This scene made me a fan of Taral Hicks voice. The voice came straight from church. You can tell.
Can we all talk about the symbolism behind the fact that it was *Church Avenue* station that was cleverly chosen as the setting for this scene?
I remember watching this show as a kid. This one was the only one I couldn't forget. Even as a kid I understood the pain behind this.
Manni Interrupted I agree, I never forgot this.
Jay Fiya her voice is so haunting.
Manni Interrupted I watched this about ten times back to back today. Classic.
I don't blame you. Thanks to youtube I can too.
I loved this one of course but the one with Rosie Perez was dope.
Taral Hicks can wail
Taral Hicks is a goddess given human form.
Taral Hicks can really sing 🎤 🎵🎶
Her big sister D' Atra Hicks throws down too! When D'Atra sings you see all kinds of expressions come out. Those Hicks sisters don't play!
Taral Hicks is amazing.....
Tiffany Morris #Facts her sister is Deatra Hicks.
Taral Hicks is amazing 🎵🎶😀
Why her career didn't blow up is beyond me
@@keonta81 because she is actually a beautiful woman inside and out. the industry doesn't want people like that.
@@myss_que_tue_yue3936 Both sisters can throw down!
She can’t get to her Mother. That is heartbreaking. I never saw this series but Miss Taral, the amazing sax player, and that cantor, wow what a haunting scene.
this was the last time NY was really NY. Everything changed as the millennium crept up. 1997 was a cool ass year 98 was aight
NYC fucked up
97 was the best period. In pretty much all states.
Right the whole desporia changed all over amerikkka.
thats true. thank you for saying this. You really are right, and what you said was very beautiful. thank you again for saying that.
WordisBond. Eye literally just wrote a comment like this about NY. How the end of skate key is when things started changing in NY. Eye just remember not being able to wear certain colors to skate key in it's last year and a half and ever since then, NY has been this fake west coast life. Literally nothing on NY is guys it use to be. And it's sad. NY use to have it's own vibe. Now it's just a bunch of copy cats and wannabes.
Her voice gives me goosebumps
Taral Hick's version of Deniece Williams' song "Silly" is so dope. This reminded me of how dope a singer she is.
I just recently discovered that she can sing. I watched an interview and they spoke on it. Her version of Silly didn't disappoint. She definitely did it justice.
@@ContextReallyMatters did you the interview she did on Fat Joe's Instagram show?
@@briantbethea Didn't see that one. The interview I caught was on the premium Pete show.
Yep I used to own the whole CD.Why her singing career didn't blow up is beyond me
I was in the 7th grade when this came out & I never forgot about this scene... Her voice is amazing...
Yes same! Maybe in the 8th but definitely one of my favorite movies!
I agree
YES
Do not knock at my door, for I live there no more...I have gone home to live with my God.
Thank you for posting the words. Beautiful.
I mostly know Taral Hicks from A Bronx Tale but omg she has an angelic voice! So wonderful ❤️
To Almighty, be the Glory. I first heard this song in the movie, MANY years ago, even bought thre movie's soundtrack back then just to be able to listen to it when ever I felt the need to. And it has been burnt in my mind since the very first time that I heard it. Long story short, my mother passed away a few months ago on March 6, 2023... and now, this song has a whole new meaning to me. I MISS my momma...
I remembered when this episode aired back in the 90s in NYC. This is the only episode that i never forgot. Grew up in NYC and I still miss the 90's. This still feels real!
I'm crying listening to this miss my Mother so much.
My mother died almost 14 years ago and my father 13. I will always miss them. This story and her amazing voice hits hard.
I even bought subway stories on vcr tape cuz of this PERFORMANCE ❤️❤️ it was all so beautiful and sad and haunting. And when the Cantor came in singing in the end. The dichotomy..chefs kiss.
Not a dichotomy. Just a further expression of grief
This was made so many years ago, but last year so many people had to say goodbye to loved ones over the phone that it’s taken on new meaning to me. In NYC, no less
Taral Hicks has such a beautiful singing voice. 🎵🎶
The Great Kenny Garrett on sax. Miles Davis' last great saxophonist from his Marcus Miller era! Taral Hicks great talent!!!
My mother passed away 1 year ago hearing this song is breaking my heart I know her pain I miss my mother so much if can just hear her voice one more time all I have is memories
I hear you. I would give anything to have my mother back.
It’s absolutely amazing that the legendary, world class musician, Kenny Garrett is barely mentioned in the comments. As quiet as it is kept, this is truly a “tour de force” performance by all three artists, not to mention the camera work and direction. A wonderful and timeless piece!❤️

I cried like a baby when this premiered, and I just cried rewatching it.
New York in the 80's and 90's was a special time. I live and been to many cities; Boston, DC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, Atlanta, and Huston. But there was/is something about New York that can't be reproduced anywhere else. It's pain, pleasure, bitter, and sweet rolled into one experience. I miss New York during this time.
Jason H hell yeah, you're damn right.
You sure are not lying. ❤
I've never been to America but when I think of New York I envision the gritty streets seen in crime dramas from the 70s 80s and 90s. I heard gentrification has changed it alot
Belly just happens to be on BET. It made me want to watch this classic scene. Taral Hicks Killed this.
Roland Muskelly lol same here
Taral Hicks voice is anointed!
I still cry when i hear her sing this
One person voted this down.
One person has no soul.
I pity you.
Stunning woman with a voice. Criminal that we don't have more work from her.
This never gets old!!!!!!!
This gets me everytime Taral Hicks!!!!!! 😰😫😍🤩

@@curtis75black one of my fav scenes.
She is breathtakingly beautiful and amazingly talented!!!!
One time I was on the subway, and I saw this beautiful black woman, she was wearing a long modest blue (?) dress. And she was holding a book by CS Lewis called "on grief". The subway car was dirty, you know the way the cars were back then. And everyone on the train was dingy, it was the way everything was. But it only made her modesty and beauty stand out so much more ... no it wasn't a shine, her soul filled the train with light. I couldn't understand how she didn't see it. I couldnt understand how all the men didn't have their breath taken away. I wanted to tell her that she was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. It wasn't ... it was my soul that felt it. I looked at her, and I wanted ... I wanted to give my life to honor her. It's hard to explain... there are some women whose beauty you want, and some women ... their beauty make everything around them more beautiful. You feel this incredible sense of "I have to protect this sister with my life". Tara reminds me of her.
One of the most unforgettable, arresting pieces of film/tv I saw as a kid, back in the 90s. It had me bawling and aching. The performances have so much soul. I've never forgotten it. It has exactly the same effect on me now, at 36. There are so many ties between Black and Jewish struggles and I love that parrellel. Coming from a mixed ethnicity, Jewish family, this short is especially moving for me. We also just lost my beloved grandfather to Covid, and I know that agony of wanting to get to someone you love, not being able to, and feeling powerless, and feeling small and in the swell of life's great force. I felt that as a child, and I feel it now. This film has my heart.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🎯🎯
Prayers for the family !!! My condolences
Jew is a religion. Ijs
@@jupiterskiss3473 Jew is not a religion, Jew is a term given to a person who is Jewish meaning they either follow Judaism or are ethnically Jewish. What your peabrain meant was ''Judaism is a religion'' but of course you couldn't articulate your thoughts due to your peabrain-ness.
i remember this the first time it was on...i still cry before it starts
I remember the first time this aired on HBO, this was my favorite scene hands down. When I saw that it was going to be shown again, I had that vcr READY to record..lol.. I had to capture that moment so I could watch it over and over whenever i wanted and practice singing too, lol. It lasted a while until I discovered that my dad recorded something else over it 😒😒
I remember watching these at a kid I'm 28 now wow never forgot about this one
2022.....and still wow
This song that Taral Hicks songs has me crying every time!!!
Same here. Big fan of her, but an even bigger fan of the great Kenny Garrett on saxophone!! This is the real deal, no autotune!
Just drop the phone. Sang girl. Never seen this before. Someone posted a clip on Facebook and I had to find her
The most beautiful, most haunting performance. Ever.
She brings u to your knees the way she sings that song.....omg. This is the HARDEST scene in the movie.
I'm so mad this is the first time im seeing this!
She's gorgeous, elegant, talented, the whole package.
The innocence, and no fear of touching/leaning on telephone stands or space separation. Now fast forward 2020 🗣”CoronaVirus”-CardiB

Sh*t, I didn't touch anything even before covid-19, lol. People are nasty, hun-bun.
Remember the time, remember the movie from VHS, thank you so much for posting it here. One of the most beautiful and incredible tales from that movie.
Just beautiful
I’ve had the honor of Tara singing 🎤 TO GOD BE THE GLORY in her parents home many years ago...the tears you cry when she sings this is the same tears I cried when she sang to me!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
She is the baby sister of the one and only D’atra Hicks! From MOMMA I WANT TO SING 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨the entire family is exceptionally gifted...the daughters, the cousins all of them😂...I know them personally and they are good people 💯🤜🏾🤛🏽 RIP to Moe Hicks who we just lost😔
I will never forget the first time I heard Taral Hicks sing! So heart felt. The next time I saw her she was whipping behind in Belly. Still moved by her performance in Subway Stories!! So Gifted
I have been looking for this like forever
This scene really motivates me man. I have a horrible relationship with my mother but I can’t imagine losing her and living after that. It sucks to have a mother alive breathing and the two of you can’t exist in the same room. The eye sore is heavy when I see her, that’s how bad it is. The thoughts some sweet some dreadful and demon•ish. It’s a lot. But this scene shows me no matter what, you don’t know what somebody going through and in nyc, with how big the city is, there is so many different people from many different walks of life. Chasing their own dream, on their own path. Enjoy life, stay attentive and be nice to others. you never know when somebody can need a positive encounter during the day. It goes a long way
I’m in the same exact situation and agree with you 100%
Thank you, I have lost 3 family members in the last few years. I remembered this song and found it helps my heart.
Her voice is amazing.
A God Ordained Gift. This was Beautiful.
The 28 years later bronxtale interview bought me here.gone head',,taral🎶🎵🎵🎼🎼🥰
I haven't seen this clip in decades, but it transportsme right back to the first time I heard Taral Hicks sing!! Her voice still gives me chills❤
That scene always bring my ANCESTORS back into focus that actress is so phenomenal.
I remember watching this as a little kid, this is still my favorite
I remember watching this when it 1st came out in 97 as a teenager. It’s the only skit I really remember and have not seen this since 1998. Listening to Tara’s Hicks sing this song now……: definitely felt it alittle different. Wow.
Taral Hicks woke me up somehow as a teenager, when I heard her sing this song!!!
Phenomenal!!!
I cried. Wow. I felt it.
wordd , it’s really real
All of these years later I still come here just to hear her sing this.
Absolutely haunting! What a performance! Did anyone notice Sam Rockwell? That was him saying, "Only in New York!" I just watched, A Bronx Tale, tonight. Love Taral Hicks in that wonderful movie.
my father's dying right now he believes like this song makes Me feel ...........i'll pray this time ....I want to see my father .....I'm going home to live with god
She SANG that song👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
So supposedly all these shorts were written & sent in my people living in NYC based on things they personally saw. Now maybe it was just based on seeing Subway performers in general & the contestant wrote a short plot around that, but if this really actually happened.... that’s wild.
I am doing a podcast and we are highlighting songs and lord I had to add this one I use to watch this show but this episode has always stuck with me
I remember this being my favorite episode of the series back then, Taral just brought some much to this character
I love the juxtaposition of that girl's gospel song, with that of a cantor. I love both forms of music. Soul music, is SOUL music.
No matter where you from.
I have been looking for this thanks
This makes me bawl crying everytime 😢. I was 10 or 11 when it premiered and I still feel the same.
