Hi! Do you have any info on preferred airlines when traveling with a large dog? How did your dog do in cargo, what airline do you use? How long was the flight? Etc... I am worried about my dog being in cargo. I am taking him to Spain & Portugal from CA, USA.
Great video thank you for all your info....just want to clarify ......if I have an eu passport made for my dog when I am in Italy do I have to have the USDA paperwork completed again next year when I leave the US and go to Italy? OR is the EU passport good enough for my entry into Italy? Also, when I fly back from Italy to the US do I need to have special paperwork from Italy ( a special Italian veterinarian) to return to the US? Does the US Customs officer request documentation? My dog is a service dog and we are in Italy now. I was able to get here just fine. We are returning in April. I will go get the EU passport but don't know if I need other documentation to return to the US as well. Thank you again!
As was pointed out, the USDA certificate is only good for 10 days from the date of the USDA stamp. This can be quite stressful because now, like every other lazy governmental agency, they give the "COVID" delay excuse. We had the certificates for our dogs FedEx'd to us only two days prior to boarding our flight from the US to France. And, after all the hassles and freaking out...when we arrived in Paris, NOBODY was there to check. We did, however, go to a vet in Paris and got EU Pet Passports, just in case we had a problem since we were moving to Europe and didn't know what we might encounter in terms of enforcement. It actually turned out to be beneficial since we discovered that it was recommended for our dogs to get a particular vaccine that protects them from some parasite that can be found in the south of France and Spain...something we wouldn't have known about otherwise. Also, it seems the MOST IMPORTANT document that you can have is a Rabies Shot. Make sure to bring that with you.
Could you personally take the certificate to the endorsement office and have them stamp it?? Having to rely on mailing me documents within 10 days is very scary. Moving to Spain in a year so hoping to get some answers.
@@bunnysnake1013 I live in Barcelona and LOVE it. Spain is awesome! Unless things have changed (which they may have post-covid), you are required to go to a vet that has been certified by the USDA to perform the check-ups. The vet will file their report with the local USDA regional office the same day as the exam. In addition to the exam fees, the vet will charge you for a pre-paid FedEx delivery. As soon as the USDA stamps the vet's report, they will email the certified document directly to you. In our case, we were in transit and staying at a hotel in New York. You will NOT be allowed to board your transatlantic flight without the stamped document in your hands. Because we were on a tight schedule, I asked if I could hand deliver and pick up from the USDA office which was only about 30 minutes from my mother's house, but, at the time, they would not allow it. If you make it clear to the vet that you are under a time crunch, they should be able to get in to the USDA right away. In 2021, the USDA did not allow for personal pick-ups of the certificate. Again, that may have changed since it was something they started doing during COVID.
Something to remember is that the rabies vaccine has to be administered AFTER the microchip is implanted. So the FIRST or initial rabies vaccine would be considered the one after the microchip even if they've had a rabies vaccine before. This means you would have to wait at least the 21 days after the rabies vaccines that was given after the microchip in order to be able to travel.
My cat has his first rabies vaccine in 2018, and I got him done the second one today, 10 days before my international flight. Can you please let me know if it’s still valid to travel? Thank you so much
Hello, loved your video, SUPER helpful!!! One question, in the section where the vet fills in the microchip data and the rabies vaccine, does it show only the latest rabies vaccine or all rabies vaccination the dog has gotten so far? (its section II where you also put in the vaccines batch number etc.). Is it only the latest vaccination?
Hi, thanks so much for the info!! I live in the Bay Are too!...I am working on getting a travel certificate for my pet now, do you go to the Access Center at the courthouse? How much does it cost to get the certificate authorized/stamped?? Thanks!
So sorry for the late response. In San Francisco you can go to the "USDA-APHIS" in South San Francisco at 560 Eccles Ave to get everything stamped after your vet fills out the form. Email or call them in advance for an appointment.

Can you get a pet passport in SF ?
For the pet passport, you have to get it by the vet in the country you are traveling to. We got ours when we arrived in Paris.

Why are dumb dogs allowed in planes
Because you hate dogs. To make you angry. It works.
