Jay, the only way you can beat this episode with Conan O'Brien, is to have Jordan Schlansky on as a guest to talk about comedy or whatever you think would work!
Thanks for having Conan on your podcast ! I must admit I just discovered your podcast, but safe to say I’m subscribing and here to stay. Having Conan talking about his days on the Simpsons with a fellow writer that can relate to his stories and add to them is something that doesn’t happen often, and I can see how you have history and it’s great just how comfortable you are with each other
The guest that we were all asking for, well, I know I did, so I'll take credit. Yay, can't ask for anything better than two of the greatest writers of the greatest episodes of the early Simpsons getting together and talking memories of that magical era. Bravo!
@@JayKogen I think the only episode that beats Monorail might just be Last Exit to Springfield, so you might be right there. As for Conan, I think I've spent more hours online watching him than I've spent with my family, but maybe he is better from a distance, eh? :D
I harbored aspirations to write comedy when I was younger, but eventually had to accept that it wasn't my strength. I mention this not out of pity but because it's helped me to really appreciate gifted comedy writers (like you and Conan) who can reflexively snatch a brilliant reply/idea out of the air vs. guys like me who only think of a decent joke two hours later while driving home.
Exept for the one "Can I talk to you for a second" that you got from Lorne Michaels. That was probably the best "Can I talk to you for a second" you ever got. "Can I talk to you for a second. So David Letterman is going to CBS. how would you like to thost the Late Night Show" lol
In UK, we have a term, National Treasure, Conan must be US version. Subscribed to this podcast as I really enjoyed this channel. Thank you for sharing this. 👵😊
Conan for Taskmaster USA, and Jack McBrayer as his assistant. (Sona as his assistant wouldn't work, since nobody would believe that she gives a damn about what he wants.)
'highs very high, lows very low' is a shallow keel, not deep. Deep keel you're less easily perturbed/moved and less agile. But you move faster in the deep blue.
The question isn't IF Shakespeare could write all his stuff, it's: if he didn't - who did? I've heard of Christopher Marlowe and such... his stuff was good but it didn't match. Shakespeare worked with the actors, in a theater. He could hear and see what worked and didn't. He also 'borrowed' occasionally.
Okay but as a writer I'm here to say there are many writers who are terrible flawed lacking people that write amazing uplifting beautiful work. Background is not the foundation of writing. Imagination is. And that glove maker's son might have written every word.
First time listening to the podcast and I'm liking it. I can feel the friendship and respect that they have for one another. Hope for more good episodes 😁
I was shocked when I looked and I was subscriber 601. Looks like I'll be starting a podcast and will have Conan on within a few weeks. Glad he's easy to obtain 😉
The origin of the monkeys writing Hamlet premise is from physicists arguing about the validity of the statistical theoretical approach to ideal gas thermodynamics in the late 1800s.
All comments are welcome. And I hear you. I can only control my parts. The questions and the conversation. Commercials and breaks are pretty random chosen by whatever platform it's on. My segments are what they are. I can cut down the segments of the show which are: Intro, guest chat, question time, listener mail, moment of joy, goodbye. Are you saying you don't like those?
Conan is successful and you're not entirely because of the hair. Stick your head in a vat of orange juice once or twice a day and it will eventually come to you.
Not exactly. NBC signed a contract with Conan to persuade him to 1. Stay in the 12:30 slot for several more years with the promise of the Tonight Show when Jay retired so Conan wouldn't go to another network. They made a promise and a contract. Conan didn't need the Tonight Show. Jay Leno said he'd leave at a certain time and NBC offered the gig to Conan to prevent him from starting a new show. When NBC went back on their contract it cost Conan many opportunities and money and reputation. So I think he does have a right to complain. Even when you are rich.
I wouldn't say it backfired. Conan became a legend talkshow host and built, which later became, a podcast empire. I'm not American. I don't know anyone who know Jay Leno. But I do know a lot of people who likes Conan. And the number is growing. Even my nieces like him, and they're teenagers.
Conan is the GOAT 🐐 considered a legend and major influence on all the biggest comedy writers like Bill Hader, John Mulaney John Oliver, the list goes on and on. Jay Leno’s name never comes up in comedy circles these days. So yea I don’t think it “backfired”
There is a whole UA-cam free documentary on this with sources from all sides. Conan was blind sided and even want the lawsuit for 30 million plus. And gave most of it to his employees who lost their job with him. If you’re not on Conan’s side then lol
I thought Conan was talking about Jay Leno 🤣
I'm both better and worse than Leno.
Same.

Same! 😁

Hah! Jordan seems like a bad time. But maybe.
I gotta admit I’ll watch pretty much anything with Jordan Schlansky.
bet we ALL thought he was talking about another Jay 😭😭😭😭😭
Me too 😂😂
Conan’s podcast is one of the only ones I don’t fast forward through the ads. And a few have made me cry laugh.
Look up the video for his lux bidet ad read
I met Conan and David on the streets of Chicago last year, they were wonderful people to meet.
Well played with the title
Gratzi
So nice that Conan was yet again a host on somebody else’s podcast
Well you see he likes the driver's seat.

Damn it, as a Swede, at 30:34 he almost says it, but then stops himself and drifts south... :/ We would love Conan in Stockholm for a year.
Too kind... about Conan. You are right about me.

I have enjoyed his work which is his life ; what a life !
I love the whole dinner with Shakespeare premise.
As someone named Amber who has had a crush on Conan for 20+ years, hearing him say "I like Amber" was nice lol
He actually said Amber SD8419 but we edited it down.
Time to trim it and replay it on a loop
