- Small Water Mallards in a Canyon with Aspens? Yep! This is the most epic place I've duck hunted and that's saying something. Two days in a row we shoot our three-man limit of 21 drakes and all of them are in our face. We are talking 5-20 yards in your face duck hunting action over small water at the base of a cliff. You couldn't dream up a more unique or beautiful place to hunt ducks. This may be the most epic place to hunt ducks in the world.....If you know of somewhere more beautiful drop it in the comments!
On this freelance duck hunting trip, the Holtz Outdoors crew headed to western Colorado to hunt the public land along the Gunnison River. On day one we harvested 18 ducks on public ground and more importantly, we found this spot while scouting during our mid-day break.
On the first day of hunting this small water, we didn't really know what to expect. We packed light with only 2-3 dozen decoys and were ready to move at first light. Sure enough, the ducks were working a spot downriver from where we originally set up. That spot was getting sun first so it was first to have the skim ice melt away and water opened up. After moving down the river we set up a quick blind in the timber next to some aspens and we continued to pick drakes out of the small groups. Just before noon they really started to come in from the main river and we filled our limit pretty quick.
These ducks were looking for any open water they could find so we spread the decoys out to make room for the bigger groups and it worked like a charm. The next day we knew better than to get there so early. We showed up at 11am and we shot our three-man limit of all drakes pretty quickly. There is a link to that video below. I’m planning on traveling from east Texas to the hunt rivers in Colorado/Wyoming after thanksgiving this year. Hope we find some stuff that rivals this. Good video.
If you are hunting scenery you are coming to the right place…the ducks they can be tough to get lol
How would you say Colorado compares in duck populations to Washington/Kansas and such?
Depends on where in CO you are talking about you have to remember the state falls in two different flyways. Overall though I would say flighty amd not as consistent as a place like Kansas, but on a migration day it can be good :)

That was the problem we should have used sling shots on this one lol even cylinder was to much choke for every shot being inside 20 yards lol
You sure have attracted some stupid comments on this one Pal. Shooting is about more than only shooting in pro made hides at a duck farm. It's being out with your buddies trying ideas and showing it, warts and all. It make the rest of us feel better, when the things that we tried turned out, not their best. Things don't always work out good, but a poor morning shooting, is better than the best day at work. Great video as always.
Thanks Ian it’s just one person amd doesn’t bother me. I am going to continue to put out the truth. Sure it would be easier to not show the group where we fell asleep but it’s part of the hunt amd that happens at the end of a long season, especially after long drives amd two days of hunting.

Does this video consist of bad shooting, loud mouth cussing, gangbanging sorry hunters standing outside of the blind kind of action that makes good hunters cringe at the thought that you're actually showing the world how bad of a hunter you really are, like your previous videos?
