League of Geeks is probably the best indie studio left in Australia... They had a hard time with their first title "Armello" (a brilliant gem of a game imo) i'm sure a signal boost will help 'em out.
Aint no way people regard Tales of Arise as one of the best JRPGs of this generation. It is not that good. Story and writing are atrociously bad and the characters are so one dimensional and whiny. The first half of the game is great but part 2 takes a massive drop in quality. It's seriously so mid, I do not understand why people see it as great.

This is a problem that goes beyond the current trend and reveals a fundamental problem. They are paying for strategic errors and a lack of market anticipation, they have also lost 10 billion on the stock market following announcements of lower margins and failure to achieve objectives?
Playstation as we knew it no longer exists, they stopped innovating, taking risks, no new licenses for several years, only sequels and remakes, They only focused on the hardware and not on the content, at some point it’s the price to pay! Temporary third-party game exclusivities do not compensate for the quality of first-party games
the aaa budget was cut by 60%, Now the change in strategy started by Jim Ryan towards more service games, more PC games and fewer AAA games is not reassuring for the market or for the players.

They have simply stopped creating games. Remakes and sequels are not enough and the few temporary exclusives from third-party publishers do not compensate for the lack of first-party games. And now they are launching into service games, an area that they do not master well and they are gradually abandoning large narrative games (-60% budget for AAA games), which was their trademark .
Helldivers 2, created by a third-party studio, supports them in this new strategy.
For comparison, in 2024 alone, Xbox is releasing more exclusive games from internal studios and some third-party exclusives like: Hellblade II, Stalker 2, Diablo IV, the calls of duty which will arrive day one in the gamepass, Avowed, Flight, Simulator 2024, Indiana Jones
Flintlock, Towerborne
Ara, Ark II, age of mythology. For its part, PlayStation will not release any first party games until March 2025 according to the CEO of Sony. The difference is striking.
Xbox creates content (AAA, narrative solo, rpg, strategy, new games, new licenses, varied games for all tastes), while PlayStation sells consoles. I'm exaggerating the line a little but that's it. It's the opposite now, Xbox puts more budget into AAA games than PlayStation.
The change in strategy towards more service games, more PC games and fewer AAA games is not reassuring either for the market or for players.
Whoever did the casting for that Borderlands movie was high I swear.

I don't even play Borderlands but seeing who they cast in that thing....the Cheesecake Factory comment is apt, and will be proven with box-office receipts. There won't be any. Well, no one under 40 anyway, and anyone over 40 (me) doesn't want to watch another stupid godawful video game adaptation. We suffered through enough of those already.

You've *got* to be fucking with me. Brick and Mordecai is THE bromance of the game. And the most interesting and likeable characters. Roland is 1 dimensional, Tina gets old fast, and Tannis is literally just exposition.
Tina seems to be a fan-favorite, she has her own game. Seems reasonable they would add her instead of random bulky scream scream character. What did Brick ever add to the story/lore other than being a leader of some bandit group in BL2 I think it was? He is probably one of the most irrelevant characters.
That being said maybe we should just wait and see. I don't care about their age as much. And I still remember Adam Sandler fondly in Reign Over Me, so just because you do comedic stuff a lot doesn't mean you can't expand into something a little more serious eventually - not that Borderlands was ever super serious to begin with. You people seem to be determined to hate the movie before it's even out.

Ok, so it's not an actual ghost of the dead brother which you fight, it's ghost data of his dead brother's playstyle on a CPU you can fight. That's pretty legit.

The brother asked the community if it's possible to continue fighting Ghost Data of his late brother because he wants to honor his late's brother memories through Tekken from time to time, this reached Harada and he said that this is possible and would be willing to do more for the brother if more information is provided.

I dunno why you would even want one. Just buy a PS5 controller and bluetooth it to your PC, and now you can play 90% of Sony titles and 100% of xbox titles, and you get over 30 fps unlike those consoles, and you can download mods.

5:00 I think this needs some clarification? The gamespot article on this says that the studio has 300 employees, 90 is getting axed with potential further cuts totalling 150. Not that the studio is 150 employees with 90 getting cut.

I think we're seeing a reckoning. The games industry has been trying so hard to extract as much money from gamers as possible, to the point where almost no AAA devs are even trying to do the most basic thing possible: make good games. Now we're seeing studios like From and Larian who never lost sight of that original vision seeing insane success, while big studios flounder under the weight of their own shareholders. It's going to be a painful transition, and it absolutely sucks to see all these people lose their jobs because of it, but I hope that the positive outcome for all this will be a better, and stronger games market, with its focus more directly targeted at the consumer and not the corporate big wigs.
Unfortunately I think they will see helldivers 2 and think "oh, live service games are good" and take no notes about how the game is just fun. We just live in groundhog day.

First question they would ask is: Why Helldivers is making money and Suicide Squad is not? They're both live service games.
And the answer to that is: The game is actually good, with fair entry price and fair microtransactions.

They still have to figure out why Sony gamers are a fraction of Helldivers 2 playerbase. The real problem is how do they get more PS Fans to buy multiple games each year.

I've only really just taken the time to reflect on it, but I don't think I've missed an episode of This Week in Video Games for a few years now. At this point, I could probably set a clock by this weekly show and still make my appointments on time.
The consistent quality and trust that good ol' Shill Up, and the rest of the growing team, has built is something that I think is worth celebrating.
Obviously, this isn't really news to anyone else hanging around here. But, since I don't think I've ever publicly mentioned how much I appreciate this channel, I figured I should say something nice for the algorithms.

My friends and I love the Dark Pictures games so I looked into that. There are 150 employees whose jobs are at risk, not 150 employees total. 90 jobs are anticipated to be lost. The studio itself is reported to be about 350 strong before the cuts. This is still a huge loss to a studio who’s work I think would benefit a lot from more hands, but it’s not the death sentence that losing 60% of its workforce would have been.
I’m so glad Nier automata has done so well. It had a tiny budget so the fact that it has continued to sell up to 8 mill almost 10 years on is fantastic!
Endless ocean has a special place in my heart. It came out when i was in Highschool and my mom would borrow it from the library for me multiple times. Happy to see it gets love.
Same, I freaking love endless ocean. I’m not very excited for whatever this new thing is though, (haven’t watched full vid yet but I assume it show that trailer from a bit ago), it looks like one of those bad multiplayer mobile games. I would really prefer an actual sequel :|
I will forever remember Endless Ocean: Blue World as the game which gave me thalassophobia. I'm not even kidding. One time, when I was playing the game as a kid, I was swimming around in the west part of the second map when I heard the danger siren, so I turned around and saw a Great White headed straight for me. I thought it was Thanatos (the juggernaut Great White who ignores your only defense against violent critters), so I panicked and got out of there right away. Ever since then, seeing dangerous stuff underwater (in games, at least, I haven't tried reality) has always made me freak out, and I've never been able to finish the game.
Ironically, I looked it up a few years later and it turns out it almost certainly _wasn't_ Thanatos. You first _see_ him on the southwest side of that map during a scripted sequence (and I had never seen him after that), but he actually hangs out in the southeastern part after that sequence, and I think I was too far north to possibly aggro him anyway. Still, that doesn't change the trauma or the phobia.
It's interesting you mention Suicide Squad in the UK specifically. As someone who lives in London I can tell you that marketing for this game is *everywhere*. Almost every bus, bus stop, billboard, etc seems to have a "Kill the justice league" ads. So they have really pushed the marketing on this, but it has flopped despite that.

EA just announced that almost 700 jobs across several studios are being cut, as well as announcing the the FPS Bounty Hunter/Mandalorian game they had in development is canceled.
Dragon's Dogma 2 (March 22), Black Myth: Wukong (Aug 20), STALKER 2 (Sep 5)
I'm already set for this year.
About FF 7 PC port: I disagree. There is no reason to expect a PC port so soon.
FF7 remake had a 6 month exclusivity deal but took a year and half to release on PC. It also had some patches for bugs after release.
FF16 is still not on PC after 8 months and that game is due to be ported first. So even if FF7 rebirth is ready to go in May (highly unlikely), they will likely delay its launch.
I want to it to come soon, but we should be realistic about it. I would expect it to release near the end of the year, conveniently near the GOTY awards…
It’s Sony’s loss. Helldivers 2 proves that day-and-date multi platform releases sell the best. It’s no wonder their gaming business is floundering when they keep making dumb decisions. I would be willing to buy the game full price Day One, but if they’re going to treat PC and Xbox players like second-class citizens, then I’ll just wait for a deep sale.

we both know its never going away. the CEOs and board of directors will keep shoving the square in the circular hole until it fits.
I don't mind "live service" for multiplayer focused games, especially ones with a strong pvp element. However, please stop trying to make single player or co-op campaign-focused games live service, it just makes them worse games.
Live service, or, drip feed content for an underdeveloped product that will be monetized as many ways as can be conceived for as little work as possible and absolutely no passion from the devs.
"We have listened to consumer feedback and have decided to move away from our current Live Service business model, and instead focus on a subscription based model that will keep what consumers loved from our Live Service model, namely the MTX's."

Last Epoch also has fundamental issues with its game. Missing features, poor NET code, numerous visual and game breaking bugs, and many examples of the dev team censoring communication and criticism on official channels. What LE and 11H games have done right, is amazing and excellent and needs to be remembered and celebrated. What they have failed at needs to be called out and fixed.

I’m studying game development right now and I’m terrified of the industry. Why would anyone hire me or my peers when they can hire someone who already has AAA experience. I worry an entire generation of fresh talent will be lost due to these lay offs, not just because many of those affected will leave the industry, but because there’s no jobs for those who would seek to enter the industry
Please switch to a different part of CS, if youre in school for game development now you're setting yourself up for failure like someone studying theatre

I kinda disagree with my comment now. AAA is going to shit but there is so much more than that, and the industry 2 years from now will be so much different. That’s not to say the layoffs aren’t awful, but that I do think things will get better, and they’re not as doom and gloom now as we think they are

25:10 @SkillUp It's very, very presumptuous to say that Overprime had Epic's blessing as the "official" successor and much more accurate to say that the company paid Epic Games a large sum of money for the rights to the Paragon name and logo trademarks in an attempt to buy itswlf credibility. Sort of the opposite of an official blessing.
If anything, Predecessor has more of an Epic blessing given that the Pred devs are funded in part by an Epic Games Mega-grant that they won and also have support from Paragon's original creative director Steve Superville.
Despite that pretty large hiccup in your reporting, I love that you covered Predecessor and I've subscribed because of it.

I was in my early high school years playing Gigantic. It truly took over my life with the visual style and incredibly diverse cast of characters. This game coming back truly means so much for me. I only wish I had the ability to get a PC to play the masterpiece that is Gigantic 😢
