    They make my K-horns look like ear buds. I came into high end audio back in '75 with a pair of kc-br .I think my last speakers will be a pair of these. My 85 year old mother has my original Klipschorns with a MX-110 and a 240 power amp. She uses them every day. Last week I visited her and she was playing Beethoven's 9th at live levels you could hear it 1/4 mile away. She lives on a hill overlooking Belleview Country Club.

    Although I have not read this, I know the original professional Jubilee was only flat to around 45 Hz, so I am strongly suspecting the electronic crossover has equalization to bring the cutoff down to 18 Hz.

    From what I heard about the Celestion Axi2050, it could cover the 300-20000 Hz band on its own. If the bass only goes up to 300Hz, the directivity of a loudspeaker being so difficult to identify by ear, it does not seem essential to me to put a delay on the horn. Don't you think so too?

    • @TopShelfAudio
      @TopShelfAudio  2 роки тому

      I'm not an engineer by any means so my understanding isn't as technical as it could be at all. If you consider the route the LF has to take to exit the cabinet through the folded horn though, I believe this is where the delay comes into play. The horn is firing directly at your face where the LF has to take the longer route to exit. With what you're saying, it could be that it would sound decent without the advanced DSP with the less directivity of lower frequencies...but the goal wasn't to make a decent sounding speaker...I really believe the goal here was perfection. As such, the DSP seems like the only way to go....and when it comes with the system...no real reason to look elsewhere.

      Different tech. I'm not an engineer by any means and won't claim to be but I believe it has to do with the shape and depth of the horn and the throat. This would be a great question for Roy the next time I talk to him. :)

    Based on your discussions with Roy what would you say would be the ideal space for these? W/D/H. As well as spacing from the rear and side walls. The perfect room you might say...

    • @TopShelfAudio
      @TopShelfAudio  3 роки тому +1

      I can ask but I'm not sure there is one. Everybody is afraid of smaller rooms but Roy always says the smaller the room, the bigger the horn. Jubilees are funny with the back wall because the bass is more directional. When you sit near the back wall in a small room the bass can be bloated when it shouldn't be plus with Jubilees you can get cancellation in the upper bass depending on the frequency, bass can bounce off the back wall and combine with the waves coming directly out of the bass bin more than typical speakers. Ideally you'd run a sweep with REW / UMIK-1 and see what you're dealing with. -- Cory

    So I see that the active crossover / DSP is supplied. What amp setup is recommended?

    • @TopShelfAudio
      @TopShelfAudio  2 роки тому

      DSP is provided, yes, but you aren't required to use a specific amp for these. With the way the DSP is designed, it opens you up more to a ton of different options to customize your setup. I do want to emphasize though, that you will for sure want something super clean.
      All of that said, with the underground versions, we would typically recommend pairing with the Cyrus Stereo 200. It's an awesome unit and I'm sure we will see these go hand in hand with the new versions as well.

    Cory, which live version of Midnight In Harlem do you use?
    also, distortion certainly seems more damaging to your ears, but I guess what you're saying makes sense. crappy old sound systems cranked up will destroy your ears, even at moderate levels. I wish I could get back what I lost. maybe there's a way. here's hoping.

    • @TopShelfAudio
      @TopShelfAudio  2 роки тому +1

      I use the one on Revelator, I was just comparing the sound of the guitar to how he sounds live. I couldn't think of the word at the time but guitarists call it "bite", they say his tone has a lot of bite to it. This easily stands out when you hear it live. Doesn't sound the same at all when you put it into a typical system or hear it in your car. The Jubilees and others such as the Klipsch Cornwall brings this tone out nicely. -- Cory

      Roy always says that the smaller the room, the bigger the horn. I've seen the original style / underground Jubilees be put in an 8x10 room. I had them in my 15x20 theater room and thought they were perfect. Just because they can be loud as shit doesn't mean you have to play them at those volumes. Honestly can't say because we don't know. Klipsch engineers seem to know what they are doing though and are pretty amazing individuals. Most things tend to come down to cost vs benefit and keeping the speakers of different tiers in line.

      To be honest, doing this is not a popular move whatsoever, most people do not want to do this unless it just happens to be necessary. • @TopShelfAudio
      @TopShelfAudio  2 роки тому +1

      @@hermanchigrin6360 on the bass bin? All I know is that this layout makes for the least amount of distortion, it's significantly lower than the Klipschorn both in harmonic and intermodulation distortion, plus the natural response is flatter and extends higher. The last part was the original reason for the Jubilee, you couldn't make a 2-way speaker of this size back in the 90's without it extending so high, the crossover point was 800 hz. It keeps getting lowered as compression drivers get bigger and better but yeah that was the single biggest driving factor, upper extension. The K-horn can't really hang in the same manner. -- Cory

      If you're going to use a sub such as in a theater setup, I'd recommend a horn. Either a badass pro cinema Klipsch one, or JTR Orbit Shifter, or a Danley, or something ridiculous along those lines. For 2 channel there is no point outside of perhaps dealing with room modes. Unfortunately in home theater, with most processors you are literally just throwing away the LFE channel when you don't run a sub, doesn't really matter how capable your mains are, so I always recommend running one if at all possible. -- Cory

      To be honest, people have been trying to pretty up the 402 horn ever since they were released. Most look funny to me although a couple were ok. We have literally been trying for 20 years to figure out how to make the 402 horn presentable. I think the industrial designer did a fine job personally. It's very minimalistic if you think about it. If you just really don't like the wood surround I'm sure you can figure out how to take it off. It's not like the project is going to get killed / "stopped" because somebody didn't like the wood.
