I helped my children start seedlings this spring. First round was cucumber and tomatoes. I took them to town to sell those at the farm market. They sold out. We went home and transplanted pepper seedlings and squash. Kept enough for us to grow, but they will be selling those as some of the elderly ladies requested in a few weekends. We made cookies together. They got to experience competition with another grower, and they got to count back change and speak to strangers. Chalk it up to homeschool economics.

I went to Lowe’s this year to get some starts and OMG the price of the small starts were 5.50 for 1. I had to purchase a few because I was unable to start any seeds this year myself. I spent almost a $100 and didn’t even get enough to fill my Green Stalk. I then went to my local Farmer’s Market on Saturday and the same farmer I buy my meat from told me to come out to his farm later that day and he gave me so many starts that I’m running out of room to put them. He wouldn’t take any money from me so I put some in the egg slot before I left. I also came home and got a quilt I finished over the winter and I took it back to him. He was so happy and thankful for the quilt. But he has no idea how thankful I am for him and for all the starts he gave to me. God definitely answered my prayers this year. I don’t know how anyone could afford to plant their garden out with purchasing starts from a store.

My hubby built me a small greenhouse 2 yrs ago 16x 20. We put a wood burner in so I could grown in colder months. I grew all threw Dec 17 th. Started seedling in February ( in house) moved out to greenhouse in March. I have supplied my intire neighborhood with free veg plants in the last 3 weeks. Free of charge, I did ask fir my containers back.😂
Most of our neighbors are elderly couples. They all wanted to pay me. I said Nope, I want everyone to grow as much food as possible. I gave out 2 kinds of broccoli 3 kinds of Brussels sprouts, lettuce, 5 kinds of Tomatoes, squash, seed potatoes, parsley, thyme, 5 kinds of Peppers, celery, cauliflower, 3 kinds of cabbage. All our plants are Heirlooms so I told them all to save their seeds fir next yr. we all need to pull together to make it threw what is headed our way

Thanks Patara. I guess I am very fortunate. Here in Central PA I buy from an Amish nursery that sells any type of tomato/vegetable for $1.20/six pack. That's right, only 20 cents per seedling. I planted nearly 50 red bell pepper plants for less than $10 for example. Places like Lowes are FAR more expensive of course. People like the Amish and Mennonites will prove to be the foundation of survival for much of rural America. The Metro areas? They are quickly becoming NO-GO zones of crime, and death. All the best to you!

$20 for one Cherokee Purple plant?!?! You are right Patera. Our only local greenhouse sold at the end of last year. The new owners tore down the greenhouse and put up a doggy daycare. Not only did our community loose a source of very affordable plant starts but also a wealth of knowledge from the owners. The next closest family owned greenhouse is about 30 minutes away and their supply was completely wiped out in about half the time it usually takes. I’m getting my diy greenhouse done this summer so I can start all of my own plants next year.

Not the typical gray clouds seen here in my neck of the woods. I do know for the past year the skies have been filled with white lines and I cannot help but wonder if they have something to do with what is occurring with the weather as well as my growing food.

Had several volunteer broccolis so transplanted to the area I needed them and will share the bounties of the harvest. Milking the cow, getting 3-1/2 to 4 gallons a day, so selling the extra, making butter, yogurt, soft cheeses and clabbering some for the chickens as well, helps cut the feed bill and the calcium helps their shells. Have meat chickens and replacement layers coming mid-June, so we can butcher when the weather is cooler. Looks like fear of flooding is going down daily, praise be to God! You are so right Patara about being "priced out" A few years back, I bought a 5 lb bag of plain old russet potatoes for 99 cents, sometimes as low as 69 cents a bag, my thought then was "why bother growing potatoes, they're so cheap. We were shocked when we went to our local Home Depot over the weekend, too! I am so thankful my honey decided to start "way too many" tomatoes and peppers (and cucumbers and watermelons) from seed this year! Even the little plants were pricey... I did pick up a hard to grow from seed herb and a handful of flowers for the garden, but when I transplanted them into my garden this weekend, I also planted some different flower seeds. I would have gotten a couple large flats last year for what I paid for 5 or 6 small plants this year. My reasoning was to put already blooming flowers in the garden to help increase my pollinator attracters, since most of our veggies are in bloom and I was slow starting flower seeds. We had a stranger stop off, asking if we were selling tomatoes and peppers because of the number of plants we have in large pots on pallets near the garden. We aren't, but we told them we might do so next year because the ones we have are doing quite well and we have plenty of seeds now.

This year I started everything in our garden from seeds, first under lights and then in our greenhouse. I’m so glad I did because prices have gone up to $5 for local organic starts, ie, one tomato, squash, or pepper plant, or a 6 pack of lettuce, broccoli etc. Recently I went to our local garden centre to buy potting and garden supplies for next year; a clerk told me they had difficulty getting supplies in this spring and she could have sold her own personal seed starting supplies on the black market for a lot more than she paid last fall… people were desperate. This was another wake up call so now every time I go to town, I stop and buy a few more quality food growing supplies for the future when likely we will be growing almost everything we eat.

I was able to get into a community garden nearby which really expands my space. I'm out of room here, so I'm excited to have the extra room. I was not prepared for it, so it's not well planned. I got it at the last minute as an opening came available. But I'm in and I'm definitely thinking ahead to fall crops and putting out onions and garlic and stuff like that over there. For this summer I'm trying melons and put my extra tomato seedlings over there. I'm also trying squashes I've never done before. I've always been a casual grower but last year took it seriously and have been adding to it the past 18 months. I'm limited with space and proper sun so there's only so much I can do here. I'm still eating produce I canned and put in the freezer last year so we are really going through that stuff now which is helping with the daily food bills. I only went to the store twice this month for a couple odds and ends. I also signed us up for milk delivery from a regional dairy and that's been really good. It's more expensive, but not by a lot....and it's soooo good. And I'm buying direct from the farmer and not the big grocery stores. I also bought a farm share in chickens and I'm expecting to get eggs in the fall from my own chickens. Which is really exciting to me! None of this is inexpensive anymore, but it's better than paying retail on everything AND much better than doing without.

Went to Dollar General to pick up things I needed for around the house. I noticed that they had vegetable seeds so I decided to pick some up since last year they had none. Well all I can say is they doubled in price since yesterday before last (2021). I got 24 different packs and figured it would be $6. I about passed out when they said $12. Instead of being a quarter a pack, they are 50 cents a pack, and the green beans normally would have around 20ish seeds, well the packs I got this year only had 8 seeds except one pack had 9. Glad I still had seeds from before and I probably have enough for a couple of years, but I will definitely be seed saving from this year forward. May be able to sell seeds and become a millionaire if I charge what they did.
