One of the many talents of Maynard in A Perfect Circle is to do awesome covers of his idols. I remember a beautiful version of ''Ashes to Ashes'' by David Bowie too.
This is one of those songs that's almost untouchable, meaning NOBODY can do a good cover of it. Not only was the studio recording excellent, but this blew the recorded version totally out of the water. Maynard is EXCEPTIONAL here.... and I have seen many covers by certain people that only come close to 10% of this brilliance. Wow. Thank you for posting this.

Actually I meant to post that comment compared to PUSCIFER's studio version, as like I said, it's quite amazing when someone is able to pull off a classic song. When I said it blows it away I was referring to PUSCIFER'S recorded version, not QUEEN.I love Queen. One of my favourite bands ever. And its exceptional because Maynard IS NO FREDDIE. they're so different. Know what I mean? It's like An*l C*nt and their cover of "Stayin Alive" by the Bee Gees (I knew those guys personally working for)... played it for them and they laughed.

its Maynard, cant say more if anyone can challenge freddie its him, and this version or the puscifer version he doesnt let down. Maynard can do anything he puts his mind to and i think has become the closest to freddie mercury more than anyone in achieving one of the greatest voice you will ever hear. No he is not freddie mercury, but he is maynard and he is the best at what he does.
Gawd, that would be so complicated doing live, especially with a conductor, with the rallentando at the end of the solo, Billy, the drums, gradually slowing the tempo, and a conductor slowing the tempo at his own rate, they almost pulled it off, but overall a successful live attempt. Maynard's range and control is just un-f'n-believable, and he's in his 50s now. Somehow he is defying time and his voice is getting better with age, like a fine wine.

However, there are things that Maynard does better than Freddie, relative to Maynard's style, such as his screaming in songs like Ticks and Leeches. It's hard to compare the two when Maynard is singing Freddie's song, but if you could hear Freddie singing Aenima, you'd be saying the opposite. On another note, I'd like to know why this was a thing. Why on Earth would A Perfect Circle cover this, and without any adjustments for their own style. I've never quite got it.
Not a fair statement IMO. All of Queen's 80's performances, that I have seen, Mercury couldn't or wouldn't hit certain notes. It could be that I am not watching the ones where Mercury nails the vocals. MJK should be past his prime as a vocalist at this point. My guess is he is pushing 50 when this was recorded whereas Mercury was in his prime when he recorded Rhapsody in the studio. I am a Mercury fan and he is great but I wouldn't rank him over Maynard. But both are phenomenal vocalists so I think it's just a matter of preference. But even now with his AARP card Maynard still sounds great and he does some cool stuff on Eat the Elephant. And this is a solid live performance that sounds better vocally than the live Queen stuff I have seen.
