- The LEGO Disney 43227 Villain Icons looks like an amazing LEGO set idea on paper! But I'm not so sure about the execution... Is it truly an Icons set? Is it relevant enough to be made into a product?

Captain Hook did in fact had a pocket watch! It can be seen when he's waiting on the bomb he sent to Peter Pan to explode!
It seems the US VHS cases where white instead of the transparent ones from Europe I was more familiar with!

I’ve seen both transparent and white cases. I don’t know if it’s a Latinamerican-Market thing. But I think it depends on the movie.
The only watch I recall from the story was the one swallowed by the croc or something. But I thought that was an alarm clock. Could also be a reference to Big Ben which I think was a thing in the movie when Peter and the children were flying to the island. Overall though, a definitely obtuse reference.
This video was awesome thanks for the wonderful review btw I feel the clock could also be referencing the one the crocodile ate along with hooks hand which explains the hook on the back of the clock which I thought was very clever ! Once again, loved the review as do I all your videos !!!
I grew up in the US, and I'm used to seeing cassette tape boxes being made of opaque white plastic. I guess it was different in Europe
I can confirm that in Europe VHS boxes were either fully black or fully white. If I'm not mistaken I had Shrek VHS in green box. But this was an exception.
I remember the transparent-whiteish vhs from disney, but maybe they were re-releases from the late vhs period (I live in France btw)
In the US at least, Disney always had differently styled VHS cases compared to other movies, and they all had that iconic white interior/edges.
As I recall, the first couple of releases were in black clamshells- Robin Hood, Fantasia, and Pinocchio. After that it was white cases all the way.

To me, this looks like a left-side bookend, which makes me wonder if another set with more villains - or possibly one with princesses or heroes - will be released in the future to serve as the right-side bookend
That would be cool to get. It could include Scar , Mother Gothal , Lady Tremaine , Clayton , Captain Pete , and Yzma.
@@juliancaraveo5700 Is it odd that my brain went to a completely different list of villains? Judge Frollo, Cruella Deville, the Horned King, Professor Ratigan, and Dr. Facilier.
That is quality speculation. Also makes me wonder if there will be several more and if all of them will be oriented the same way (all left side) so they can be a long column down multiple shelves.

Captain Hook had a pocket watch! The Crocodile ate it along with his hand, that’s why it makes a ticking noise that he’s afraid of.
You’re right we don’t ever see it though, because it’s inside the crocodile.
That one is a regular alarm clock? I think we do see it briefly in one of Hook's and Tiktok's (name of the crocodile) interactions
@@TiagoCatarino I think they show it as an alarm clock in the film but it’s a pocket watch in the book.
It does make way more sense for a crocodile to eat an pocket watch alongside his hand rather than an alarm clock- why would he be holding an alarm clock?

I think later in the movie when Hook sends a bomb to Peter's lair, he checks a pocket watch to see if it went off yet.
It’s like the designer knew both versions u guys all mention. Old fashion alarm clocks had bells on top, each side, which this one doesn’t , pocket watches had a big ring on top for a chain, with the time setting mechanism on top, however they also had a face cover which this one doesn’t. It’s like this clock is a combo of an alarm clock n a pocket watch. 🍻
The apple and other accessories look great but I agree the VHS tapes don’t scream “VHS” to me. Yay for new Disney Minifigs!! ..now fingers crossed for a Belle minifig one day 🌹⭐️

I grew up in the 90s and these are actually very nostalgic. I had each of these movies on VHS and the covers did indeed look very similar to how they are portrayed here. Little mermaid and ursala would have been a great 5th VHS to add to this.
I agree with you, in comparison to the Harry Potter Icon set, this one is a bit underwhelming. I feel like they should have stuck with books as a base to keep a timeless feel, but also in reference to the openings of many of these films.
I also think better icons could have been used:
- A Half Painted Red and White rose for the Queen of Hearts could have worked, and we know lego can do roses well.
- Ursula's Shell Necklace would have made sense for the Little Mermaid
- Maybe Jafar's Cobra Staff or even Iago could have worked well for Aladdin.
- I kind of think Captain Hook's actual hook could have been an interesting build
And then maybe they could have had books for Maleficent, Gaston and maybe Cruella De Vil, because she is definitely an icon of a villain. They could have also had some fun and thrown in Yzma's Llama Potion and Dr. Facilier's Talisman.
Totally agree that we needed actual Villain icons--not items with villain branding! I just wish that the VHS cases opened up to hold the VHS tape. I will be building the VHS cassette separately.
Normally I don't care about the Disney sets but my late brother who had severe autism was obsessed with collecting the Disney VHS' line and, being these are all from the classic era of Disney animation these are also some of his favorite movies. I know I'm a very niche case that I'm doubtful LEGO could have planned for but I genuinely got some tears in my eye seeing the loving details of this set and the recreation of the VHS tape really brings back some loving memories of my brother. You got me, LEGO, I'll be snatching this one up for display.
The sides of the Disney VHS tapes were white back then not translucent.
As a display piece i agree it looks really mediocre, but i have to give credit for those minimalist images of Jafar and Melificent on the cases. Those just look beautiful. I wish they had made art pieces like that the focus of the set instead of the non-diagetic objects
They kind of made that already! Another Disney 100 set is a picture frame of nine squares where you can make disney characters in that style of build

Funny thing is, I’m a 90s kid and I watched all these movies back in the day but they were not in official pretty boxes but rather in some generic VHS cases, so not only these look like books to me as well, even if I saw them as cases they would not bring the nostalgia.

So, in the US at least, Disney VHS tapes were stylized with white plastic clamshells rather than the more common cardboard slip-covers, so these kinda do read as VHS tapes to me, but i would have rather had a more accurate recreation of the covers of the VHS tapes rather than the villain designs in the set. Obviously this is a set about villains, but if they wanted these to read as VHS tapes, they suould have made them look like the actual VHS tapes
Europe also had the clamshell covers, its just that the plastic was semi transparent
Really wish they had included some more villains as minifigs though, there are so many iconic ones!

I have the sleeping beauty and Aladdin vhs on display and the sides are white, not transparent. Only certain VHS cases were transparent. Great video! I really want this set now!
This is super nostalgic as growing up with VHS the cases built/displayed here in NA were known as clamshells and reserved for animated/family orientated movies. Most other movies had the slip case box treatment. Clamshells were characteristically bigger, plastic as they were more durable than than the box cases. Overall this is a really cool set. Interesting builds/minifigs/easter eggs scattered about. The pocket watch makes sense because it can be still heard inside the crocodile that snatches off his hand often chasing him away.
Your criticism about people under 25 not knowing what a VHS tape is might be fair. But this is clearly a nostalgia set for people who grew up with Disney VHS release (aka people who are 25 - 40) or even their parents. I went to Disney World last year with my partner's family and they are DISNEY PEOPLE. And a lot of the merchandise there is aimed at people like this. It's unique and targets a very specific kind of nostalgia.
Personally I'm adding this to a list of Christmas items to give to my partner's mom because I know she would love it.

A pocket watch is Hook's iconic item from the book. The croc bites his hand off while holding the pocket watch, and giving him his namesake feature. The croc, now having tasted Hook, wants to eat the rest of him, forever hunting him. Hook can always get away because he can hear the ticking, but lives in fear knowing one day the watch will stop...
But not a movie icon, so an odd choice. While VHS tapes are nostalgic, they aren't really villain icons, so also an odd choice.
This feels to me like they just made some random builds so they could sell minifigs for $130
As an owner of plenty of vhs tapes I can confirm the sides are white and not clear. Loved the video Tiago, and although I will not be buying this set I can at least appreciate it through your video!
My grandmom had--and still does have--a sizeable collection of vhs' that I always enjoyed playing. I told her that they were like blue-ray dvds in how when you take it out it remembers where your where at in the film. vhs tapes hold a special place in my heart even though i'm just a teen.

I think Captain Hook DID have a pocket watch in Peter Pan, but it wasn't something ever really focussed on? I seem to remember him having one to watch the time for when the bomb he left for Peter would explode, and I think he pulled it out in his conversation with Tinkerbell...? And the Queen of Hearts being a playing card makes sense because her character originated from a playing card, all her subjects are literal playing cards, and I think during the chase scene right before Alice wakes up, there's a whole cloud of them falling that the Queen might be part of? It's been a long time since I watched either movie, though I saw them both a decent amount of times when I was a kid.

I am 25 in September and i know alot about VHS tapes we had a whole collection growing up and even remember being able to record a movie or tv series on a blank tape for later viewing. If i had the money i would buy this immediately because it brings a heap of nostalgia

Captain Hook had his pocket watch eaten along with his hand by a crocodile (hence the hook). That same crocodile would make a tick tick sound when he would be seen swimming around tormenting Captain Hook. It qualifies as an icon

I think in Australia we got both the transparent AND white VHS cases. I remember if you rented them from video stores especially, they'd put them in all-white generic cases instead of the proper cases they kept on the shelves.

During the ‘90s, Disney video cassettes came in book-like cases just like these, at least here in the States.
I can't say I'm concerned what people under 25 recognize when it comes to Lego sets. I like this set

I am curious as to whether I would be warmer on this if it were multiple sets rather than a single big set.
For instance, rather than a single card, you get a deck of cards that comes with a Queen of Hearts mini-fig. In place of a Book/VHS of Aladdin you get a lamp with a Jaffar figure inside. Ultimately you would have 7 sets (or more, as a series there is no reason not to include the Shadow Man in a talisman or Judge Frollo in his hat) that you could arrange as you see fit, and not buying the ones you aren't interested in.
If I remember correctly Captain Hook didn't have a pocket watch. But there was an alarm clock in the movie... which was swallowed by the crocodile, along with Hook's hand. So that might be the connection.

I walked in the Lego store yesterday and immediately recognized these were Vhs tape and case. So did my 14 yr old son. I guess we collect them. I had to have this set. I will wish in my heart that they come out with Cinderella, The Nightmare before Christmas. Pocahontas, and so many...sets like this one!
The watch and the apple are cool as hell but the VHS cases feel like a completely separate set. It just feels like a mess.

I'm still going to pretend that the Sleeping Beauty and Aladdin VHS cases are books and no one can stop me! As someone who uses books as decor this will fit right in as a display piece in my home.
I love this! I saw they were VHS tapes and thought it was very cool. Not sure why anything other than the actual tape can't be a book. Beauty and the Beast seems more like a book. They are not uniform sizes.
Being over 50 I remember these being released on VHS. It was a big deal as it was about the only way to see Disney movies. They would release movies out of the vault for a limited time. Older movies could finally be watched.
I still have my Disney VHS tapes. I can’t seem to part with them. Some movies you can’t get anymore. They also came with extra items. I know I have lithographs from some. Most were 4 or 5 pictures from the movie. I have Pooh and The Lion King framed. The rest of the art is stored away. It was a bummer when you had to buy them all again on DVD. ☹️
They were all released with great fanfare. Like waiting for Lego sets to be released! And then retired.

Disney VHS (and DVD) cases were usually white here in Brazil too.
I worked in a video store in late 80’s early 90’s and the Disney VHS had distinct white cases with a clear front and back for the picture inserts. You can google yo see the original cases.
It is an interesting thought that you suggested that these be "objects" instead of just books or just VHS covers. I, too mistook them for books when it was first revealed. On the one hand, it would have been nice, as you say, if these were a collection of items, but I would have perfectly been happy having these as a set of books. After all, they are all fairy tales. But Disney being an animation company for the past few decades, I could understand why they went with nostalgic VHS covers.
Tbf, I am 22 and I grew up watching things on VHS for a few years until me and my brother got stuck watching Mythbusters and How Its Made all day, every day
Now I feel old! I saw that those are VHS tapes immediately!

Disney VHS came in those cases with white plastic and not transparent
The White VHS cases (called clamshells) were popular with Disney in the US (vs the clear or purple European cases). The spines vaguely resemble the “Materpiece collection” spines though the rest of the covers don’t resemble any US cover art. Weird.
So many of the objects in this set just don't feel like proper ways to represent the villains; I mean really, VHS cassette tape and cases? The poison apple, card and pocket watch is fine but I'd rather swap the other stuff out for a magic lamp, spinning wheel, and enchanted rose or scabard.
I guess the white clamshell Disney VHS cases was only in America
I dunno about this exact product but I will absolutely buy the parts just to make one of those VHS tapes
I like some of the figures but yeah I'd much rather have got iconic things from the Disney films. The apple, Ursula's locket, the rose or mirror from Beauty and the Beast, Genie's lamp, etc. They could've had even more icons if they didn't have to make it like VHS tapes or just for villains. Other things like Crikee in his cage from Mulan, Ariel's dinglehopper, Cinderella's slipper, etc.

I live in the us and when my family still had a library of vhs tapes, every single one of them had white plastic covers. Tho, all of them were disney or pokemon movies, so im not sure if that was the reason why 🤔

I have to respectfully disagree. I am 30 years old and have a VHS collection of over 120 VHS tapes. Most people from my generation find VHS (especially Disney VHS) very nostalgic and it's the VHS tape alone that entises people to pick up this set, in my opinion.

Ok, I actually still have a box full of disney VHS tapes, lol, and I did have 2 fuchsia pink cases, (along with solid black ones) but they were slightly transparent, they were for blank tapes u would buy.

I think the build is ok, I'm just nostalgia'd out. Ready to move onto the future and not be stuck reliving the 90's for the rest of my life. The minifigs were great tho.

Is the brick choice (to make a certain shape) in the green poison of the apple reference to the urban legend Disney allegedly sneaked in Fallus shapes in it's movies? Could this be a very subtle hidden reference? 😅
Although nice elements, the vhs cassette itself accurate, the book, the watch, and the apple are the only nice parts. Casette cases could be any color though they died quickly from my childhood.

I am SO EXCITED for the pacman one. And while this is a nice set, and I get the display.. If I could get it on sale or as a gift, I'd be excited, but I wouldn't buy it full price for myself
