  • Today's video is on the Peugeot 205 and we've got the Roland Garros special edition to brighten up your Sunday!
Today's video is sponsored by Adrian Flux
If you're hard of hearing, the walk around text is below
The Peugeot 205 is definitely a classic - it’s a car which definitely doesn’t fit that mid century, chrome bumper stereotype classic but is definitely one of those cars which even non car people think of when they think of the 80s/90s heyday of hot hatches.
From first car memories to the car your family member or neighbour drove and you secretly wished was yours; the 205 was even only a few years ago, a cheaper starter classic, but is now commanding prices which mean even a project is a considered purchase.
But unlike many of the coveted classics you get in and realise are just a romanticised hype, the 205 feels far more promising even it’s provenance.
It was made from 1983 to 1998 and was not only crowned car of the decade by Car Magazine in 1990, it also won What Car’s car of the year in 1984 - a mere 12 months after launch.
The 205 was an interesting change of tune for Peugeot. As discussed in the Citroen video, Peugeot was the sensible older brother and really did the whole big saloon thing very well and even though they had the smaller 104, it wasn’t a patch on the 205 for the memorability and iconic status.
But as we talked about when we did the Peugeot video last year, Peugeot in the late 70s took over Chrysler’s European division which meant that they then had the expertise to create a super mini to be reckoned with and as soon as the takeover was complete, they began the plan for the 205.
Earlier cars used the X engine which had been used in the 104, but as production continued they moved over to the TU series.
Look, there is so much to say on these 205s so to try and cover the history in one video feels like I’m underselling it, so I thought I’d tell you a little more about the special edition we’re testing today - or we’ll be here all day!
So this car is a later 205 and therefore has the TU engine in and the engine we’re testing today is standard and is the 1360cc and is a manual 5 speed - which I believe was the only option, or certainly the only option listed on the brochure for this Roland Garros special edition.
The fuel consumption, when driven sensibly which is almost impossible to do in a 205, is not too dissimilar to the Sunny we took out last week.
We are predicted when driving at around 56mph to be achieving 54 miles per gallon, 40 miles per gallon at 75 miles per hour and around town is about 32.8 miles per gallon.
The speeds given sound a bit strange until of course you factor in that tests were done in kilometres and it’s been converted into miles per hour for the UK brochure I’ve got handy.
Whilst the fuel consumption is the better end of average for the era, the speed is where you start to see the fun in these 205s. We’re promised a rather hair raising 110 miles per hour and a 0 to 60 of 10.6 seconds.
The suspension is independent to front using MacPherson struts with anti-roll bar and hydraulic shock absorbers and to the rear, it’s independent of course, using trailing arms with torsion bars and anti-roll bar.
Brakes on this are split circuit with pressure limiting valve and it is disc at front, drum at rear and servo assisted.
These special editions seemed to have everything as standard, including the sun roof and the now upgraded stereo, which at the time would’ve been a digital stereo/radio stereo cassette with four speakers.
The Roland Garros special edition was far more commonplace on the continent but there were only 150 right hand drive models ever made - making this a super rare example for the channel.
Roland Garros was one of the most famous early French aviators, who also lent his name to the stadium in Paris which is home to the French open championships, the French equivalent of Wimbledon.
Like Wimbledon, the French Open is a highly regarded summer event and a place everyone who is everyone wants to attend and be seen to be attending and it was this feeling of attainment that Peugeot wanted to emulate with the special edition
The interior and finish is so different to your standard 205 and the body is finished in metallic green found nowhere else in the Peugeot range and the special colour scheme was carried through, as you’ll see on the walk around today, with the front and rear bumpers and front and rear lower panels and tail gate panel.
It was also sold with dished alloys as standard and double pinstripe coach lines to add a bit of pizazz, or as the marketing material says, a touch of refined style.
The interior is special too and you’ll note the leather and cloth seats are made to the high standard they claim, because despite high mileage, they still look in reasonably fine condition.

I remember sitting in one of these as a kid, brand new and on display in our local Peugeot dealership showroom around 1989! I loved the colour combinations even then and the new car smell. My parents bought a used 309, although years later I had a 205 GTX which I loved!

I’ve got the convertible version (in pieces!) in my garage!

I drove a 1985 205 diesel in 1996. The roof lining was gone, passenger side window winder was broken, steering rack had dangerous play and it was so much marking its territory that I had to top up oil and then check diesel level. Not only the XUD engine was very frugal, it was one of the toughest in a small car, I got it fired up at -15 degrees.

What a lovely car! A friend at Uni had a 205 GTI 1990 with 130 hp! That was really fast! Once in the snowy winter he said I could take it to a lecture and I stupidly accepted! Low profile summer tyres and snow is not a good combination, drove so carefully being terrified of crashing the car!

I had a ‘93 205 Si in Australia- 1.6 4 speed auto with AC - great car to drive with power steer and soaked up our brittle road surfaces with aplomb despite rear torsion beam - build quality wasn’t great as flimsy plastics and lots of rattles and performance on 91RON unleaded not great yet despite b pillar stress cracks these cars were the closest thing to an Alfasud for the ‘90s 👍

I had a 205 GTi and a 1.4 - The 1.4 broke down at the side of the road on my way to pick up another car about 15 years ago, some random nice chap drove me the rest of the way so I just gave him the 205 as thanks, as I was pretty much just getting scrap value as a trade in. He obviously got it running, as it was still on the road up until three years ago! Still have a big soft spot for them, but finding a decent one these days is not easy. Also astoundingly easy to break in to, as I found out when I locked myself out and managed to quickly get in with no tools!

We haven't gotten Peugeots here in several decades, so I didn't learn about the 205 until later (found some old CAR magazine in my closet from the last owner and I think LJK Setright was waxing poetic about it). I thought that it was a handsome car, especially from the 80's, a time I didn't much like styling wise. That example looks stunning; I wish I could drive it! I also remember seeing a green Peugeot 306 three door while doing some fieldwork in Italy; I remember thinking that it was a subtly attractive car, and after a month I lamented that I couldn't get one back home in America. Peugeot has styled some gorgeous cars through the years, such that I wish Setright was still around to write about them.

My Auntie had a 205 as her first car in the mid nineties when she learned to drive at the age of 46. It was a 1.0 XE. The most basic model they did. It didn’t even have head rests! I've got a 1.4 205 as pretty much a daily driver. It's the third 205 I've owned since 2005. I've been driving for 45 years and have owned and driven dozens of cars. I can't think of anything I'd rather have for my purposes. There's still a fair number on the road where I live. I owned 2 of them, one with Simca engine and the other with TU and they were both reliable and economical. The seats are great and the steering and handling are on another level. The only thing close on steering would have been the Metro and the Rover Mini.

    For context.
I was a a child at the time this launched…I remember the first few years they were made.
I was just old enough to get the impression this was a “new’ model….and was ahead of things like the Ford fiesta….even the re-modelled mk2. More refined, more modern…..and more expensive….although it was a small European car, it was somewhat aspirational for a while. I knew the higher prices of the 1.4 would make it unaffordable for a while.

Great review Steph, thoroughly enjoyed it. I worked with a Peugeot dealership for 15 years from 1987 onwards and the 205 was an extremely popular car. I never owned one (I preferred the larger Peugeot’s) but my dad owned 3 diesel ones. The TU series engine was introduced to the 205 in late 1987 (the AX was the first car it was fitted to, in 1986) in time for the ‘88 model year, replacing the old laid back ‘suitcase’ Douvrin engines which had been carried over from the 104. At the same time the new dashboard was introduced and we could tell without even looking under the bonnet (if it was a Petrol car) what series of engine it would be. The 205 was on sale in the UK until 1996, a remarkable 12/13 years, unthinkable today. I really would love one now, we had some great times working with these back then.

Smashing little car, a credit to the owner. These cars were built when Peugeot made their own shock absorbers rather than bought in ones, and they got them spot on. The 205 was pretty rust resistant too; in all my years as a mechanic/MOT tester I don't remember any serious rot. The mechanics are strong, but won't tolerate too much neglect. Try one with worn gear linkages, it's like hunt the gear! Thanks for another cracking video. Makes me feel old, as I can remember these cars when new!

One of the best small cars imo, i so badly wanted a diesel 205 but never got to own one as they held their prices so well i could not afford one. Closest i did get was a talbot horizon diesel.

I had a 205 after I passed my driving test in 1996. Fantastic cars and a great success for Peugeot. The diesel used to drive for miles on a gallon of fuel.

A design classic. The revised dashboard in this is a vast improvement. Nice looking special edition.

    Great video!
That 205 really has got all bells and whistles. My quite base 205 XL really is at the opposite end of the range. (Absolutely love that little car)
Nearly everything is different, the only things that are the same are the main body, lights, gear lever, column stalks, ashtray and dash structure.
Everything else is an optional extra it seems.

Lovely car. I remember taking the Roland Garros for a test drive and thinking what a great car. Maybe one day you could compare this car with the 205 1.9?

Absolutely brilliant I absolutely love the interiors of old cars I don’t now what it is they look like they were built to last and built so that they were sturdy now a days they’re a load of plastic or cheap materials and just awful to look at. Bring back the old days 😁

Very nice car. The 205 was always fun to drive, and yes, the GTi was the all-time great hot hatch. Even the smaller engined models were pretty good. Nice one Steph.

Another enjoyable video, thank you. Off topic question, sorry if covered elsewhere but how do you shoot the rear video inside the cars you review? They seem rock solid thats all, without all the vibration I would expect.

The 1360 in those (XS et al) used to go like the clappers. I remember driving my friends one up Haldon hill in top gear, 4 of us in it and it was pulling like a train.

I lived in Felixstowe in the late 80's, I was an American Expat and remember a lot of these cars having a manual choke and putting oil in the carb.
I drove a 1985 Mini Brilliant little car only once getting on the motorway I was always looking for that fifth gear.
The one vehicle that always gave a chuckle was driving those diesel powered Bedford Trucks that drove occasionally as part of my job they could be temperamental on cold mornings and not exactly the fastest vehicles.
I'm a big fan of small cars, I don't really like big trucks and SUV's that are popular here in the USA where I live now.

I always fancied owning one but never did. I drove a 205 hire van back in the early 90’s whilst doing work experience with the marketing team at Camelot Theme park. Sadly I only got to drive it a couple of times as someone wrote it off. I also remember a friend of mine having the automatic version that he got on the motability scheme.
