How retired firefighter views VAN LIFE FIRE SAFETY

  • This video is based on the knowledge of a 30 year retired firefighter. We are not advertising of selling anything, we only wish to pass on important life saving information for living in and using a motorhome, camper or van.
    We recommend combined fire detectors powered by lithium batteries,
    you can pick them up easily and cheaply from Amazon or ebay.
    Our model is a voice activated X-sense, however there are plenty of others that are similar.

    You have highlighted such an important issue with this video. You have certainly motivated me to check our fire alarm and carbon monoxide alarm weekly. Off out now to ensure our fire extinguisher is still current and is not 'caked' as you mentioned.
    I hope all motorhomers follow your advice and stay safe on their travels. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience for the sake of our motorhome community's safety.

    Thank you for a very informative vlog. Although we do have all those things mentioned we are going to update ours asap.
    We actually had a house fire and Rob was physically in flames, he had some burns and he also put the fire out before the fire brigade got to us, he truthfully should have got a medal. Thankfully no lasting scars we was very lucky.
    Thank you for a very important vlog xx

    A superb overview. We have an extinguisher, blanket, smoke and CO2 detector in our LWB campervan. We use a diesel heater, but not that often and have the CO2 detector a few feet above it. After listening to your overview, I’m going to move it higher, next to the smoke alarm. People have asked why we bother in the past but in future I can just point them to this video. Thanks and happy camping.

    What a good idea..., a fantastic (and possibly life saving) topic to deal with, and one that not many know much or indeed anything about. Unlike the Oven review that everybody is/will be handling. I did not attack you with my last comments, but I am one for saying what I think, when I think it. Life is not all pretty words seen through pink glasses as 99.75 % of comment writers seem to think or say.
    As a former LGV pilot, I worked for a large company who schooled their drivers on exactly this topic.
    Thanks, look forward to the next review or tour.

    I have fire extinguishers in my van for a couple of reasons. I'll need one if a fire breaks out. If I'm travelling in Europe and buy the European travel kit it has an extinguisher in it and I read the small print in my motorhome insurance and if you don't have an extinguisher in the van your insurance is invalid. A great video on an often overlooked piece of safety.

    Great vid as usual and very informative , I have a foam extinguisher thinking it would be less messy than powder in a confined space, but seeing this I may revert to powder . In the unfortunate event of a fire , I guess safely putting it out quickly is the only priority , not how much mess the extinguisher makes. I also have a fire blanket and both types of sensor.

    • @redsgotravels
      @redsgotravels  6 днів тому

      Thankyou ! 🚒❤️ Dry powder is messy , but covers more classes of fire , foam is good for confined spaces, each have drawbacks, the fire stick covers a lot more, less mess , but costs more .. you’ve got the blanket and detectors , perhaps change the foam when it’s near it’s due date, it’s good to have something to hand ❤️🚒

    I do have one question. You mentioned the detectors only lasting ten years which I was ignorant of, is that the sensor then becomes unreliable?

    Thanks for highlighting this important subject. Will be getting a blanket and extinguisher asap. Not heard of fire sticks before what are their benefits? Also amazed at the short amount of time your’s takes to discharge its contents. I guess that’s enough time to suppress the flames? Had been looking before your timely vide but don’t recall any manufacturer stating of how long they last. Lastly we have a PVC and a fabric ceiling so don’t have many places to fit our sensors, so the CO on sits on a thin shelf facing backwards in our bedroom area as the flashing light is a pain. Do I need to turn it around? Sorry for the waffle!

    • @redsgotravels
      @redsgotravels  6 днів тому

      Good morning, the fire stick has had great reviews, but is more expensive than a standard extinguisher , I’ve attached a link for info only ( found via google not sponsored by us ) which highlights the benefits .. but note the discharge time too …
      Ref the detector it’s fine on a shelf, they are very sensitive , the led is a visual to show it’s working , so as long as there is air space all around it’ll be fine 👌 you could use 3 m pads which is how the fire service would’ve fitted them, we stopped using screws due to potential damage issues , the pads worked ok 🙂 hope that helps ❤️🚒 firesafetystick.com

    Hi thank you for this video. We have a 2023 Swift motorhome with a factory fitted fire and CO2 alarms. But your video made me question where the CO2 detector is positioned. We sleep over the boiler in the end of the motorhome with the detector behind a closed door. We felt it would be an added safety measure to put an extra CO2 detector in the cupboard above the boiler.
    Thank you again

    • @redsgotravels

      Photoelectric alarms are usually unaffected by steam, so just look at different types to suit your needs, easiest option would be a slight relocation of the detector 👌❤️🚒

    Thank you firefighter officer Redders! 🚒 Appreciate your knowledge and in all seriousness, thanks for your service. It takes a certain kind of person to run towards danger when everyone else is running out.
    It really does make sense to think about these safery things ahead of time. I've added the dual monoxide/smoke detector and fire blanket to my Amazon Motorhome wishlist for our future van.
    Another vanlife channel recommended a fire and water resistant document case called ThinkTex (also on Amazon) for when travelling abroad too, so in the event of a fire if you have to get out fast, you can grab and go.
    On the subjecr of safety, have you got any thoughts on the application of security film to cab glass to prevent breakins? It's really effective apparently...but I do worry if it would hamper rescue attempts if there was an accident? My sense of it is that a break in is more likely than an accident in which you are relying on being rescued out of your cab windows...but that might just be my perception.

    • @redsgotravels
      @redsgotravels  5 днів тому

      So good to hear you are getting organised ❤️🙂 security film is a good idea for safety, but do bear in mind most motorhomes have plastic windows or vents, so a determined thief will get in, fire service would seek access anyway possible, but glass management / removal is a consideration, some big tools on the trucks that’ll peel back metal no problem, so if you feel safer , yes fit it, it won’t really hinder any rescues , the document wallet sounds good too ! ❤️🚒

    • @TheMinimalistTherapist
      @TheMinimalistTherapist 4 дні тому

      @@redsgotravels Yes, a really determined thief will get in, unfortunately. I guess it's all about slowing them down enough to make them go elsewhere. SO many of the van and motorhome break ins documented on UA-cam start with the cab windows being broken and the door then being opened from the inside or they smash and grab whatever is in the cab. Lots of folks saying it's pointless putting extra expensive locks on the doors when they can come in through the windows, which is a fair point I guess.
      Would love you to do a security video on which of your security devices you'd recommend, if you find them too time consuming to use or cumbersome to store, if you'd recommend using different ones in different circumstances etc. But I appreciate you don't want to advertise to the thieves what you are using!

    • @redsgotravels
      @redsgotravels  7 днів тому +1

      Carbon monoxide will rise through the gaps and a detector would pick up the particles rapidly , as long as you have one in each area where there’s a risk it’ll be fine , is your bedroom in a separate area behind a door ? One in the ceiling is fine , whilst I wouldn’t say no to an extra detector , one in the same area at ceiling lovely would detect a leak very quickly , way before it’s of harm to life 🙂❤️👌

    wouldn't using a CO2 extinguisher in a campervan/motorhome be dangerous through risk of suffocation?

    • @redsgotravels
      @redsgotravels  7 днів тому +1

      It would cause issues, as would dry powder , the dust from dry powder is quite a lot, co2 is less effective and I would avoid co2, by the time a co2 is discharged it would’ve dissipated rapidly .. very good point 👍🙂❤️
