Analogue Pocket vs Gameboy Classic sound test (LSDJ)

  • I kept getting asked to do a side-by-side, comparison so here it is: Analogue Pocket x Prosound DMG (with backlight installed) synced via Gameboy link cable, playing the same song in LSDJ while using the Dirtywave M8 as an audio interface into my computer.
    In my opinion they sound incredibly close. There's a small difference in noise/freq range clarity as you might expect when dealing with brand new hardware vs 30 year old tech, but it's no different that the difference you would expect when comparing two different models of actual Gameboys, or even the same model Gameboy with different CPU revisions.
    Analogue did a helluva job with the accuracy on this. It gets my official seal of approval!

    DMG has those squelchy highs that I crave. the lead is the only thing that feels more pushed into the mids on the pocket vs the DMG. but it really just feels like a different mix. so close in fact when i close my eyes I cannot tell. label me impressed with the pockets sound quality . dope track by the way.

    How would you say the M8's internal synths compare in recreating sounds from LSDJ compared to the Analogue Pocket?

    • @mikey303
      @mikey303  2 роки тому +11

      Analogue Pocket is Hardware replication, so the sound is 99% accurate. M8 can make chiptune, but is not an LSDJ emulator, however it is capable of getting pretty close. The biggest difference is it uses a different math to generate noise, resulting in different sounds, but it can emulate most typical LSDJ stuff. See: ua-cam.com/video/vfnNq52Vfi0/v-deo.html for a better reference. Cheers!

    This is probably an insane ask and totally respect if the answer no, but would you ever consider sharing one of your track files/saves for LSDJ? I'm getting a hang of LSDJ right now, and a resource that I think would be infinitely helpful would be an example file of a song of this caliber to noodle around with and see how tricks are used.

    • @mikey303
      @mikey303  3 місяці тому +1

      Sadly this song was written with a decade-old version of LSDJ that simply does not work on modern iterations, so it would not be helpful at all as most of the sound design is broken.

    The literal only place i hear a difference is on the low end bloops and blops on what i assume is the wave channel.
    Its very slightly more compressed sounding, with less tin echo to it.
    Without hyperfocusing on it it would be impossible to notice.

    What program is that running on the pocket

  • @TheHighestGodisGood
    @TheHighestGodisGood 2 роки тому +2

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but here's what I saw and heard: the right volume nob is all the way down, so the GBC shouldn't be outputting any sound. When he turned off the sound at the end, the slider was on the GBC, meaning the GBC should've been making the noise. But rather, he turned off the sound we were hearing from the Pocket. So, the center mixer thing doesn't work and all the sound was the same, all from the Pocket. Also, the music was in perfect sync, where I'd expect some difference in beat timing, since both devices were likely not started right at the exact same time. Again, just what I saw and heard.

    • @mikey303
      @mikey303  2 роки тому +2

      I'll reiterate what I said to another commenter who had a similar observation:
      The bottom right knob that is all the way down is for the headphone out, not the input volume of the device. The top knob on this mixer is the input gain, which you can see both at unity gain (12 o'clock). You can see when the crossfader goes back and forth that the volume is mixing from one device to the other. Sometimes when I am crossfading, right in the middle, the entire song gets louder because you are hearing both devices at the same time.
      The music is in fact in perfect sync, because they are using the gameboy link cable to trigger them both at the exact same time. However the fact that you thought it was only the pocket on the left playing music the whole time says a LOT about its accuracy. Cheers!

    • @TheHighestGodisGood
      @TheHighestGodisGood 2 роки тому +2

      @@mikey303 I appreciate you replying! Yes, the output does sound very very similar then. Thank you. I know the speaker output is much different, between the two, with the Pocket having louder upper frequencies (brighter). I hope somebody can find a good aftermarket set of little speakers and let everyone know what they are, so we can do a mod to make them sound warmer, like original Nintendo hardware speakers. Heck, maybe replace them with original OEM speaker replacements? I know the amp can cause coloration to sound too, but the right speakers should do the trick.

    • @mikey303
      @mikey303  2 роки тому +2

      @@TheHighestGodisGood I suspect the brightness is less because of the speakers themselves and more because the device itself has a much cleaner throughput overall. High quality components + modern DAC means the final audio is considerably cleaner. It also appears that the noise shaping is modeled off of the Gameboy Color's CPU as opposed to the DMG as there are some very particular sounds that I noticed in the Pocket's playback that the DMG lacks, and those same sounds are heard when using BGB emulator in GBC mode (BGB has near-perfect audio emulation).

    • @TheHighestGodisGood
      @TheHighestGodisGood 2 роки тому +1

      @@mikey303 That's true, upper shelf components, for a cleaner, pure sound. Maybe some top shelf speakers that are a little warmer would sound better? Not sure they make reference quality monitor speakers that size... I have a recording studio and have recorded with some big shots, so I love getting the sound dialed ;) You know... your next video should be recording the speaker output of the DMG, GBC, Advance, and the Pocket with a boutique mic and signal chain, and run it through a spectrum analyzer, seeing exactly where the frequency changes are and by what db! Then, do a video on buying a bunch of Amazon speakers and showing your testing, until you match high quality aftermarket speakers with the sonic graph of the original. That'd be sweet!!! You would start a mod that would probably blow up on channel views. Be the first ya know.

    • @mikey303
      @mikey303  9 місяців тому +1

      I imagine the DAC on the pocket is way cleaner so you're missing a lot of the "charm" that you get from the DMG headphone hum-- also the noise channel is modeled after the Gameboy Color which is distinctly sharper as well. Also after more investigation I found that the Pocket handles audio samples differently as well, so it's not perfect. I'd give it a 90% accuracy, which is good enough for pretty much anyone who isn't paying super close attention (like us 😛)

Both are very, VERY capable, but one is far more limited in what can be done. But is that necessarily a bad thing? It really depends on what you want to do, and what tools you need.
