      Yes. It's a humiliation ritual.
If we celebrated the good, we can move forward. But the creation and maintenance of shame keeps people stuck.

I never learned about this or about Emmett Till in school, but as an avid reader, I learned about many things on my own. When I became a teacher, I taught my students many of these events/tragedies that weren’t in their text books. I taught them about the impressive accomplishments of Indigenous people and other people of color as well. I always used supplemental material. Today, I would probably be fired for teaching these truths, but that would not stop me until the day I’d get my walking papers. 🫠

@timk5867, being ignorant is different from being deceived. Ignorance hinders no one until confronted with the truth, which is why the majority populace has chosen to refute the truth. Perhaps your ignorance and nonchalance was encouraged through a lack of intellectual curiosity by both you or your forebears... if so, that's laziness on you and yours. However, stifling and whitewashing history is malicious, and that's what we know systemic racism has enabled and been doing. Trying to deflect and blame a learner for that maliciousness is about as ignorant as one can be.

From1895 to 1992 , I'm from Jacksonville originally , when it comes to Discrimination some things never Change . NC gave the Confederate Army most if it's Privates , most of their Generals were from Virgini. In the Cotton States Black ( Slaves too ) were the Majority , if it were one Man one Vote ( before Suffrage ) then the entire South would have had Black officials - how clever , cry havoc , unleash the Dogs of War and the imaginary threat of real Democracy would just fade away . Majority rule or not some White Folk want Dominance in Politics, at any Cost . Tulsa happened too , forgotton , almost no prosecutions for Murder . Look up " Injustice " in the Dictionary and you'll see a Map of America . Shame on us .😢

Congratulations to Amy Goodman and Juan. Congratulations to Professor Carol Anderson, History is best written in your hands. Congratulations to Yoruba Richen for this great film. No election in The USA has stirred so much mental strife and fear in the marginalized of this global society than this 2024 elections because Africans on both sides of the Atlantic ocean are still dealing with the emotional baggage of the horrors of the trans Atlantic slave trade and route in so many ways and places. I used to hear of the Confederacy, but delved into it to know more about it just a week before this just concluded 2024 US elections. I once asked myself if any past US President has apologized to Black Americans for the injustice slavery has brought, done and left on each Black American besides The Emancipation Proclamation of January 1863 by the one and only President Abraham Linkoln, a Republican, and then I remembered that President Bill Clinton did make an open apology while in office. While one hopes that the challenges, pains and losses this singular act of inhumanity of one side against the other will come to an end, very disheartening to see more terrible stories as contained in this film are emerging and thanks to Yoruba Richen for taking the time to tell us there is more. Know your History, know where you are coming from so that you know where you are going. Thank you really Yoruba and all Film Makers who have brought real life stories of this type to the knowlegde of others.

What I don't like is how the word "multiracial" is used here; our modern sensibilities may confuse the reality here. There were just Blacks & whites there.
