I was wondering why didn't Data just upload all the information into her brain. Different configuration? Or he could have given her a memory stick. Or he just enjoyed her company too much to part from her.

I missed this episode ( quite a few actually) watching these shorts has been fun but I was unprepared for the end of this short, its the funniest scene I've come across. Darn near spit coffee all over my phone!

Even after all this time it still gives me a laugh. Loved Riker's reaction, Frakes handled it well.

Fun fact: this is Riker's only appearance in the episode, as Johnathan Frakes was busy directing it. This was his directorial debut, so he was still getting used to the role, and didn't have much time to act, as well.
And he did superbly. And later we would get First Contact from it.

Riker knew he was the best character to fit that scene, we all know even though he's a nice guy he has a keen predatory instinct when it comes to the ladies. Good to see him overpowered and put in his place by a female android's advances, he looked way more into that kinda stuff with the klingon females lol.
Everytime data calls Lal by her name he is calling her beloved
I can't help but think we just witnessed Rikers exit strategy when it comes to awkward situations in a bar.

Wonderful scene! This episode is one of the most unforgettable of the entire series, for me, at least. Such excellent writing, and acting. Two beings incapable of emotion, for the most part, stirring more emotion than most other episodes. Thank you for posting this.
Starfleet is really dumb to try and break up this family. Both Data and Lal have "the strength of ten men", and he has already proven that he could take over the ship by himself, even when he wasn't thinking straight. There's no way that they could coerce him into accepting this against his will.

What would have perfected this episode even more would have been Data being able to use contractions after reintegrating Lal's programming into his own.
Oh my god, imagine having Data as a father in law, and starting that relationship in this way.
would've been funny if it was Worf, too. Just recently Guinan told him "there are some of this ship that would find you... tame." (And hey you know Worf's all about biting the females.)
Female biting is a Klingon cultural thing, not just a Worf kink :p
Would be funny if she took that as a challenge. Further proving she's exceeding Data by taking offense. lol
So much potential in this character. Wish the show took more chances and kept her.

That _"Data cannot use verbal contractions"_ thing is honestly the silliest decision the writers ever made. 😂
I think he used the contraction "I'm" in Picard's ready room, too. Either that or he said, "I am" very quickly.
I think his programming is just too pedantic when it comes to language.
_Michiel,_ Yeah it's ridiculous. Even slightly worse is how he'll say things like, _"we will arrive in 3 days, 20 hours, 21 minutes, and 49 seconds,"_ instead of shortening it to the most meaningful 'digit' (ie 3 days). I'm only a couple seasons into another rewatch of the series recently, but he does it at least 3 separate times in the first 2 seasons, and it just feels really weird he doesn't learn from the mistake by that point. (Granted even though I think NextGen is kinda bad for long-term character arcs by modern standards, _man_ does it do morality lessons better than 99% of shows nowadays.)
I honestly gotta disagree. Its a great subtle character quirk.

And they don't treat it as a subtle character quirk. It's been plot-relevant in multiple episodes.
“Commander, what are your intentions with my daughter?” ---Fucking Data... Cracked me TF up! 🤣🤣🤣 Every once in a while, TNG has some GENUINELY funny moments. I especially like when Picard is made uncomfortable by something.
I also love the moment when Riker talks to Worf about everybody on the ship being on edge lately, Worf: "I hadn't noticed." and then they enter Ten Forward and the place is one big bar brawl. 😆 (I don't remember which episode that was.)
@@Dowlphin Yes, I remember that. I wish I knew which episode that was. Worf is a great comic relief character.
I can think of at least 2 or 3 TNG moments where Worf has sent me into laughing fits.

I love this scene! It comes up frequently in my recommended. I click on it again every now and then. It doesn't get old. Her movements right before she grabs Riker are perfect.
I like how Riker isn't that confused by being randomly kissed.

I like that when Lal mentions Guinan's age, you can see she bites back a comment. She recognizes that neither Data nor Lal would ever consider her age a negative or use it as an insult, and their stated reason is completely honest.

I love how according to Star Trek, speaking in contractions is like the next level in AI. In reality it's just a basic substitution. Data was so smart that he could build himself a daughter, but he never figured out how to substitute "you have" with "you've".
I've seen bigger glitches in sophisticated programming.
I'm picturing data dressed like Jed Clampet holding a double barrel shotgun overseeing Commander Riker and Lal's wedding and making sure Riker doesn't run away.
Awesome fact-Gene Roddenberry wanted the couple to be a same-sex couple so that he could show an onscreen lgbt relationship. However, studio execs refused to allow it. I’m glad they’ve relaxed their stance in recent shows.

This episode shows contrasting cultures of authority thinking what is best for raising an individual vs a parent. The authorities are the federation and admiral while Data is the parent. These are viewpoints of the collective on thinking what is acceptable for authorities vs the wants of kids and parents . An example I can give are foster kids being sent to a specific person that is acceptable for raising them, but the family or individual they are in fights to prove they are worthy of keeping them.

It always seemed odd to me that with all data's capabilities he couldn't figure out contractions, there's only so many recognized contractions and they're simply combinations of certain words, so it shouldn't be hard for him to figure out, if I'm using "I have" I can substitute "I've" He's perfectly capable of /understanding/ contractions but for some bizarre reason he can't /use/ them? Like all other star trek technology he's completely governed by plot. Though thinking about it, how often has it come up? Like twice? Once to tip them off that it was Lore instead of Data, and the second time to show that Lal had surpassed him.

Eh, it often happens that writers look some translations up and get the wrong idea.
Some Japanese game developers wanted to name their new game something like 'stubborn ape' and the translation came up with "Donkey Kong"
Marvel comic Writers wanted to name their general character after the German Word for warhead and came up with "Kreigkopf" which is absolutely not the German word for warhead.
So this does not surprise me at all. But I am curious, what does Lal mean then?

Oh wow, here he actually makes it canon that contractions are a still he had never managed to master at that point, i.e. very difficult. That is so unlikely. It would have been much more believable if he simply chose not to use them unless he is acting. Although that would still not be very elegant, since he has learned tons of portrayal to act more human.

With something as significant as data making another android, Riker didn't hear about it this far into the episode? Sure it's funny, but is it also logical for the script? Maybe I missed something. Like did he just return from vacation?
I don't remember where he had been, but they said that his shuttle had just returned. He had been away from the ship until just before going to Ten Forward. Even if he had heard about Lal, there was no way with the social media shown in the show that he would have seen what she looked like
Consider that this show started in the late 80s, early 90s where cellphones were quite the anomaly still. Something as social media or online news where information is immediately available all around the world was a foreign concept back then.
Hey, if I only got one shot at a kiss in my life and it was with Riker, I would consider my life well-lived.

They missed so much by ending this character to early.
An unfathomable amount. Imagine Picard with Lal having survived.
I imagine her death in exactly that way was perfect though. Maybe one episode for creation and Data winning the custody battle, three episodes of improvement, and then one of spiraling degradation and death. It would give the crew and the audience more time to get attached and perhaps a better chance for Data to explore loss than he got with Tasha.
