After You've Gone - Piano Solo + Sheets

- The song "After You've Gone" is from 1918, with words and music written by Henry Creamer and Turner Layton, respectively. I was first exposed to it in the video game BioShock: Infinite, where a modern vintage style rendition of the song plays at the main menu every time you start up the game. The BioShock series as a whole is one of my all-time favorites, and one of the reasons why I became interested in older music from the first half of the 20th century.
What I play here is actually a combination of multiple arrangements. For the first two thirds of the video, I mainly tried to imitate several different performances by Stephanie Trick but also borrowed passages from the version played by Daniel Souvigny in the 2015 Old-Time Piano Playing Contest. Then, starting at 2:08, I did my best impression of the version from BioShock: Infinite, which was sung by Jessy Carolina with Scott Bradlee from Postmodern Jukebox on the piano. This song is special to me, so I hope I did it justice.

Love it. Sheets are linked to in the description, by the way, if you need them :)
Hahahahahaahahha
You play just like my grandpa, he learns everything by ear
Outstanding rhythmicity. There's lots of competition on this song but this version clearly stands out.
Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it!
Felt like I traveled back in time!! 🎶
It’s brilliant and I love it. No music means their brain is playing along with them. So clever. I don’t know how they do it. I can’t even whistle a tune. Bravo.
AMAZING!!!!
Lyrics:
Now won't you listen honey, while I say,
How could you tell me that you're goin' away?
Don't say that we must part,
Don't break your baby's heart
You know I've loved you for these many years,
Loved you night and day...
Oh! honey baby, can't you see my tears?
Listen while I say:
After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had
There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Someday, when you grow lonely
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me only
After you've gone, after you've gone away
After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You're gonna feel blue, and you're gonna feel sad
You're gonna feel bad
And you'll miss, and you'll miss,
And you'll miss the bestest pal you ever had
There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
But baby, think what you're doin'
I'm gonna haunt you so, I'm gonna taunt you so
It's gonna drive you to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away.
Thanks, Claire!
LOVE this arrangement and your touch.
This version is so beautiful! I listen to it all the time
Thank you! Hearing that means a lot to me. I'm happy to hear that you like my version so much 🙂
You did a fine job. It was a very smooth combination of styles. I've chatted with Scott a few times, I'd say he'd be happy to have been part of your performance.
Thank you very much. I'm very pleased to hear that you think Scott would have approved of the way I included an excerpt of his arrangement. I'm a big fan of the work he does over at Postmodern Jukebox.
That was wonderful! I thought I was listening to an Ampico piano roll! Your performance and dynamics are very authentic to the post WW-1 era! Very impressive!
man this is way too much beautiful
Thank you!
Once - max twice a year - I come across a piece (piano, electro, pop, jazz... music in general) I find myself being obsessed with.
This is one of them!!
F*** awesome dude 🥰

Thank you! I'm glad I could make your day, because your comment made MY day! It makes me very happy to know you enjoyed this piece so much.
incredible i love it
Read your description and eventually find myself in it :) This song is also my favorite one throughout the series, and your arrangement showed me a new aspect of this song. Love it
I'm very glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
This song itself is serene and not frenetic
Older people usually like classical music or calm things but I think this song is optimal for all ages.
Amazing job. Your style is impeccable.
Thank you very much!
Wow, I'm in a smokey public bar in 1950's London!
Best piano cover of this Song on you tube! Awesome, man! Thank you for this
Thank you! It's so kind of you to say that. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. You're a very talented singer and guitarist!

I keep coming back to this - love it truly. I’m going to learn this one - would be great to play for people 😄 well done on a great arrangement !!
Thanks, Marnie! It means a lot to me to hear that you've enjoyed my recording so much. A lot of the passages I played are clips I transcribed from performances by Stephanie Trick and Daniel Souvigny.
@@RetroPianist Of course !! Your channel is great, I love that you do old songs on piano - it’s my favourite stuff to listen and it’s great to see someone else who shares a love for the old stride tunes. Keep it up ! :)))
One of my favourite songs! I love the Ruth Etting version. I love bioshock as well! You got a good choice in games sir!
Well, thank you very much! If you like this kind of music and BioShock, you've got great taste yourself!
Fabulous performance of this wonderful example of stride. Thank you for shsring.

Thank you very much! I listened to some of your music, and it's very cool.
Thanks you :)
Great rendition.
Thank you very much, Andrew! I'm glad you liked it.
@@RetroPianist I downloaded the sheet music and look forward to the challenge of mastering it. Thanks for offering it for free, too! Very generous. Please keep these old numbers coming. They are a joy to listen to and play!
This is one of the best versions next to the original by the Capris I've ever heard. Why is the audience just sitting there in their chairs? Shouldn't they be up and dancing? I would have!
Well done.
Thank you very much!

Good job, excellent perfomed.Unfortunately, I can't play on the piano like you 😌
Thank you! Considering how well you play guitar, I'm sure you could learn to play piano too!
@@RetroPianist thx Retro, for your kind words 😊

Thank you so much, Marius! I'm glad you liked it. You have some nice music on your channel, too.
Hey! When are you going to post some new material? Really miss your wonderful playing! Thanks, in advance!
Hi, Nick! I'm hoping to get at least one recording done for Halloween, so with any luck I'll get that posted next weekend. I also have a few other pieces which I'm currently working on. Life and work have been crazy lately, so I haven't been playing piano as much as I'd like, but I'm trying to get back into it. Thank you for checking in - I can't tell you how much I appreciate your continued support and interest in my music.
@@RetroPianist Hey Alex. Thanks for your response! Glad you are considering some new material. Yes, life’s routines tends to curb our efforts at stuff that’s really important; like music! Hope all is well.~~N
Fantastic performance! Enjoyed listening. Like #12! Let's stay connected. Musical greetings Tobias
Thank you!!

Bravooooooo***** utube john bavas crazy
This is so beautiful! Would it be alright with you if I used this in an interview video I'm doing with devs from Bioshock Infinite? I'd of course credit you in the description :)
Yes, you have my full permission! You're interviewing the BioShock Infinite developers? That's amazing. I'd love it if you could share a link to your video once it's uploaded.
@@RetroPianist Will do! Thank you so much, yeah I’ve already recorded interviews with a number of BI devs (not Ken Levine lol, but they’re all very cool)
0:35 what is the name of that genre ?
Hmm, I think you could probably say it's a type of jazz. Maybe a little blues mixed in as well?
I'm here as a result of my search for information on the Harmonic Major :)
Someone wrote a wiki that an example of such songs is After You've Gone
but it is this one?
there are a few others, but also without the author's name :(
'Blackbird',
'Sleep Walk',
'Dream A Little Dream Of Me'
I'm guessing that this is the same song the Wikipedia page was referring to, but I don't know if the particular arrangement I played in this video uses the harmonic major scale. It does use a lowered fifth at times. Music theory is not one of my strong areas - sorry I can't be of more help!
@@RetroPianist you don't know much theory and came up with this arrangement? Whoa dude, you are awesome. Awesome playing, I wish I could play half as good. Congrats!
@@pymebones Thanks so much! I can't take much credit for the arrangement though since I learned it by ear and based it on arrangements by Stephanie Trick, Daniel Souvigny, and Scott Bradlee. It's sort of like a combination of transcriptions.
I’m looking to play the old timey part of that song, where does that start on the sheet music?
Do you mean the part starting at 2:07 in the video? That section begins on bar 53 of the sheet music.
In what key does Stephanie Trick play this? Thanks
From what I can tell, she plays it in B flat major. That's based on the several recordings of her that I used as a reference when I was learning the piece
Isnt this.... This has the same artist who wrote "Sweetheart we need each other" right, no?
I don't believe so, no. I think the song you're referring to was written by Harry Tierney and Joseph McCarthy. "After You've Gone" was written by Henry Creamer and Turner Layton. Perhaps you heard the same musician record both songs?
Thank you for the sheets and awesome arrangement! You should also check out Jimin Park's version if you havent already: ua-cam.com/video/K7L0Quz_yS8/v-deo.html
I have seen Jimin Park's rendition and it's amazing! I also love her performance of Hazel Scott's "Taking a Chance on Love": ua-cam.com/video/QJ3lf1e0PVQ/v-deo.html
@@RetroPianist Thanks I have not seen this one until now. Incredible!
