Mark Abel (b. 1948)
American composer Mark Abel has built a strong reputation for his vocal pieces, which have been performed and recorded on the Delos label by world-class singers such as Hila Plitmann, Isabel Bayrakdarian and Kindra Scharich. But the past few years have also seen a flowering of Abel’s works in the chamber idiom, including collaborations with renowned clarinetist David Shifrin, cellist Fred Sherry, pianists Dominic Cheli and Robert Koenig, and cellist Jonah Kim, for whom Abel wrote Approaching Autumn.
For those who are new to Abel’s music, not much guidance is needed. The flow of melody, harmony and rhythm carries the listener along without the need to be informed about musical structures or compositional techniques. Repeated hearings bring a greater appreciation of the music and deeper understanding of its emotional content.
Above all, it is Abel’s mastery of the vocal line that informs his writing for cello in Approaching Autumn. The music is lyrical and accessible, unlike much that is being composed today. A sense of playfulness also permeates some sections of the piece, as the cello and piano quip and converse. Abel effortlessly combines elements of jazz, rock and classical into his own distinctive style, enfolding performers and audiences alike with a wide range of tonal colors and impressions.

From the first notes on the piano, muscular rhythmic vitality! If you're not amused by the rhythmic monotony of Glass, check this out. Powerful performances by both Kim and Cheli, who clearly enjoy the vibrant interplay that composer Abel has laid out for them. Bravo!

From the first heraldic notes on the piano, muscular rhythmic vitality obtains. If you're unamused by Glass' rhythmic monotony, this music is for your. Kim and Cheli provide powerful performances and take full advantage of the intense interplay that composer Abel provides. Bravo!
