Jonah Kim is an artist of great charisma and originality. Kim’s beauty of tone is immediately distinguishable by its signature sweetness. He invites the listener in with “the cosy warmth of a well-loved cashmere sweater," (Gramophone) then “dives into the music with courage underpinned by formidable technical prowess, with which he achieves a dazzling performance.” (All About the Arts) He is artist-in-residence at the Barclay Theater and San Luis Obispo's Festival Mozaic.
“With his pulsating vibrato and intense expressivity, Kim asserts the cello’s eloquent personality throughout the varied atmospheres.”
- D. ROSENBERG, GRAMOPHONE
“Moving and musically satisfying performance... Kim’s full-bodied, rounded cello sound is ideal... lyricism and the energy and passion of his playing carry the listener along.”
- J. BANKS, THE STRAD
“He flirted with the line, shaped it, wrapped it around his fingers, pulled it out in a new dimension, all with practiced ease"

NEW! KEN UENO "URI" 우리 私たち · LIVE 2023 WORLD PREMIERE
Jonah Kim, cello @JonahCello
Dominic Cheli, piano @DominicCheli
Part I (00:00)
Part II (09:00)
Uri (우리 · 私たち) (2020) for cello & piano
Ken Ueno (b.1970) @Ken_Ueno_Composer
I am excited to share the video of the premiere of "URI" here with you! It is a powerful new work my great friend Ken composed for me in 2020. We met back in 2010 or so at a music festival through another old composer friend. Our music making is overtly contrasting, Ken and I; yet, we share many similarities in our approach, our intensity, and the emotional content that give the notes color. In fact, my first reading was very different from how I play it now. It took a couple of years living with it to "find the duende between the lines" to quote Ken.
Hope you enjoy listening to Uri, a piece I love and treasure in many ways. It is initially reminiscent of pansori or hogaku, yet the phrases are distinctly contemporary in a powerfully relevant expression of feelings we are living with here, today.
Sheet music will be available from Ken's publisher, Schott very soon.
Notes from the composer:
I had been meaning to compose a cello and piano piece for my friend the cellist Jonah Kim for some time. The pandemic provided an unexpected window into my schedule and I set to work on it. The night before finishing the piece right around the time my lack of commitment to a title was building up its own creative stress my friend Jocelyn Clark (a Harvard classmate and gayageum player, who, fifteen years earlier had been the first performer to commission from me a piece for a Korean instrument) forwarded me a link to a video about the Korean word “uri.”
What I learned about “uri” is beautiful. “Uri” stands for the connected self the “boundary demarcating the “self”:
1. indicating an “extended embraced integrated connected self”
2. where “I” and “you” are chunked together.
It is a concept of “I” that is foreign to the Western sense of the isolated self. This revelation hit poignantly as my self-quarantined-covid stress had been exacerbated lately by daily viewings of videos online of selfish fellow Americans refusing to submit to the basic communal courtesy of wearing a mask when shopping at Costco.
As I learned about “uri” it occurred to me that by coincidence it resonated with how I was designing the relationship between the cello and the piano - starting with a piano solo the cello gradually shadows the piano coloring the stillness of low notes interrupting eddy-like flurries which gradually transform into something like a shamanic incantation. “I” and “you” are chunked together.
I revel at the wisdom the world (friends) suggests to me which in turn brings clarity to something that I had already done or was in the act of enacting. Such is the flow of eddies they circle back even as they flow downstream.

Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations Jonah Kim
Oh! so beautiful and energetic passacaglia rhythm it is, well done! Mr. Kim. Wonderful learn by heart. especially, the length of your second beat is veryvery nice. from second beat to first beat in next bar is the construction standard of Chaconne. I would feel that there is so mysterious phrasing and breathing in sarabande and chaconne rhythm. It is also so difficult to express Bach's musical language articulated breathing. breathing, breathing・・・! I hear that Beethoven said "tempo is music" Occasionally, I would love to listen to Heifetz, Szigeti and Kogan. Theirs breathing is so natural and graceful. (92yrs.Japanese) sorry strange English.
Thank you so much for your insightful comment. I’m so glad you enjoy this version. Happy holidays to you.
In the year 2050 people will shake thei r Headset.. Chaconne with a Mask on!!! Nevertheless, beautiful played
Thank you. That’s what we get for living in San Francisco- we could not enter the park without masks on, even outdoors. Grateful to have those days behind us!
Wow. As a cellist, I hope to play half as well as this some day. This was lovely!
Hope you enjoy your cello journey!
The translation of the ciaccone to the rich sonorities of the cello is brilliant, shining a new light on this marvel.
Thank you so much!
The ballet is a lovely addition too 😀
Thank you, it was nice to work on something with my wife during the pandemic.
An incredible performance! 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Magnificent ❤ on touche au Divin ✨
Thank you. Bach really is divine!
Private message sent via Facebook. Jonah---I have absolutely no doubt that you and Julia are angels sent from Gott in Himmelhoch to save me and the world...
You are far too kind. Thank you so much and all the best to you.
My favourite part is from 12:54 to 13:34. It is as if all the pain comes out, finally finds an outlet... very good rendition
Increíble 👏👏
Gracias🙏🙏

감사합니다 🤗🤗
Thanks for those tips. May I ask What helps you have a good awareness of the positions?
Scales and arpeggios definitely help organize the positions in the mind for me. I also like to practice double stops within each hand position to remind myself how the intervals feel within each position. Hope that helps!
So clean and gorgeous and full of soul. This helped me to cry when I really needed it. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for your note. Whatever you may be going through, I wish you the best!
my goodness, how good you are.🥰 I'm a cellist, I'm also curious about your position on the chair, the cello with the very extended tip. I'll try it too maybe it will help my sore right shoulder
Thank you so much. Yes, my sitting posture helps keep my back straight and shoulders low and ready to adjust- hope your shoulder pain goes away!
貴方を知れて良かった。
Thank you!
Even Johan Sebastian would be stunned!
You are too kind, thank you.
Ohromující nádhera!♥
Thank you so much!
Heavenly!
Thank you!
The best performance of all I have ever heard of Chaconne. I'm always returning to this again and again. Thank you so much for your performance and to Bach for sure for this piece!
Thank you for enjoying it!
what a legend
You’re too kind. Thank you!
4:43
Thank you.
You are a freaking legend!!! Your hands are made of steel!
Thanks so much!
Angelic
Thank you!
What a beautiful version of the Chaconne - I've never heard it played with cello! Absolutely breathtaking! Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoy it!
ruined for me by the stupid needless masks that doesn't protect anyone from anything. Particularly hilarious on the face of a lone dancer outside on her own.
We did not love wearing masks while performing - in San Francisco at the time, we could not even enter the park without masks. Glad those days are past us.
Awesome! An excellent video!
Thank you!
Thank you! I somehow love cello better than violin.
Cello is really a wonderful instrument although I am always envious of violinists and pianists for their repertoire!
do you know where we could find this sheet music?
Hi! Yes, my transcription is for sale, please give me your email address and I can send you a link.
Thank you for sharing this. Your video inspired me to practice double stops in a new today
That’s wonderful! Happy practice!
A great interpretation, doesn't get better, played in the spirit of Bach's tragic loss of his first wife Maria Barbara.
Thank you for listening!
Such an eloquent and dramatic performance of the Chaconne, Jonah. Yet sustaining the sense of religiosity, so adequate to those times of Covid. I also love the wonderful ballet dancer. Congratulations!
Thank you for listening!
4:50 might be the most breathtaking and beautiful thing I’ve ever heard this inspires me to keep practicing and master the cello ❤❤❤
I agree, that variation is breathtaking. Thank you for listening!
This was very helpful. Wish there were more clips on bowarm.
Glad you found it helpful. More to come!
Thank u!
My pleasure!
Whats that funky looking thing on your bridge?
Practice mute
Pretty kewl !!!❤
Thank you and happy practice!
Incredibile. Un suono incredibile. Bravissimo 💖
Grazie!
Your performance is alive in itself, and you played the best Beethoven Sonata to the point where my jaw dropped. Look at the bowing. It's truly neat and produces a solid sound, whether used sparingly or extensively. This piece is the pinnacle of art and music. I respect you.
Thank you so much, and for commenting on things I really strive for!
This is truly the best!! Wow, it's shocking and amazing.
Thank you so much 🙏
@@JonahCello Your bowing is neat and clean. Every day, I find solace in this song, and your performance is the best, as are all the other pieces you play. You are truly a master. I am grateful for your performance and also thank God for giving us musicians like you.
Thank you for listening and your kind comments. I’m so glad you enjoy it!
Mr Kim owns this piece, and I am trying to imagine Bach's face when he sees his masterpiece on the cello and with a.....mask. He probably will think that he breathes behind the mask some psychedelic stuff that makes him play better and he will wonder where to get this.
Thanks so much! That mask definitely did not make things easier😆
This is beyond words... Thank you so much
Thank you for enjoying!
The ending!!!!!
I hope it’s to your liking!
This performance (probably unedited) is epic on so many levels..
Thank you so much, Phil. Means a lot to me.
Yoooooo. I can't believe I'm only finding this now 🥲 such a fantastic performance-LOOK AT ALL THE VIRTUOSITY!! Beautiful tone, voices were so clear, love the little personal embellishments here and there (final chord made my jaw drop 😱). Congratulations!!! I'm so floored by this. Thank you so much for sharing this. What a gift 🙇🏻♂️
Thank you so much, I’m so glad you enjoy it!
I'm back here again and again and still same émotion, beauty and energy. Thanks for this
Thank you so much. Your enjoyment means everything!
The deep resonance of the cello adds so much maturity and richness to this war horse of a piece. It's joyous, heart-breaking and hopeful, and you bring out every colour - it's sublime.
You are so kind. Thank you for enjoying!
This is one of the ensemble's best. The two string players are both excellent, and the entire trio is very unified on this particular composition which is very well composed. Are the string players brothers? I assume they are Koreans, and Korean musicians tend to be very exceptional.
Thank you so much. We worked very hard on this and love this piece very much. Dennis and I are brothers in music, though not by blood!
Wow
🙏
This sounds like life.
Thank you!
Great work, fantastic performance.
It was incredibly challenging to prepare and equally rewarding now that you enjoy it, thank you!
do you have a transcription? this sounds so good
Thanks! I’m happy to share the pdf with you
I can't thumb it up every time I listen, so I'll have to leave comments instead. Thank you.
Thanks for this and best to you!!!
