    It's great that you addressed clipping, but I want to make a slightly more in-depth note about it: You can get two main kinds of clipping, FFB signal clipping and FFB power clipping.
    Basically FFB signal clipping is what happens when the FFB "gain" (not necessarily FFB level) is turned too high in-game. In perhaps more relatable terms this would be like the "Max Force at Steering Rack" in RealFeel, or the Gain setting in AC, or the Tyre Force in pCARS. This controls how "big" of an FFB signal (on a range of 0-100%) a certain force in the steering rack simulation causes. So for example lets say our FFB system is set so that a force of 100 results in a 100% FFB signal, and turning a car at max cornering power results in a force of 200 in the rack simulation. You set the gain to 0.5/50%, you get a force of 100 as a result and that results in a 100% FFB signal when cornering at max power. Gain to 0.25/25% and you get a force of 50 resulting in 50% FFB signal when cornering at max power. Now if you set gain to higher than 0.5/50%, you get a larger force than 100 at max cornering power. With 1.0/100% gain you get a force of 200, but you can only send out a 100% FFB signal. So you end up with a 100% FFB signal when only cornering at half power, and anything above that doesn't change anything in the feel of the wheel. This is clipping, the wheel will get to max power very quickly, but you lose half of the possible information you could get out of the tyres while cornering.
    Additionally some games have an overall FFB level adjustment in addition to this gain. For example in pCARS you have such a system. This allows you to limit and scale the FFB output of the game, for example if you have a wheel that's so strong you're afraid of hurting yourself. This allows for weird setups like a high FFB gain that clips hard, basically turning into an on/off style FFB (which some people like) but limiting the maximum power with the FFB level setting so that the wheel isn't thrashing about wildly.
    So that's FFB signal clipping, the FFB signal itself hitting and staying at 100% even when there should be variation in the forces based on in-game events. That sort of clipping can be detected by the game and it's easy to account for, just look at the FFB meter and lower your FFB gain until it stops clipping.
    The other, slightly more difficult issue is FFB power clipping in the wheel itself, outside of the game. This is when the FFB settings on the wheel itself are adjusted so that you're asking more from the wheel than it can deliver, and it responds with the same power output you can feel in your hands when being fed with a varying signal. This is the reason T500 and T300 models are usually run with 60-75% overall FFB setting, because anything higher won't increase the maximum power of the wheel, it'll just make it reach the same level of max power with a lower FFB signal level. A T500 set to 100% will start hitting its maximum power output at roughly 70% FFB signal strength, so even if you have perfectly set up non-clipping FFB settings in the game, the wheel itself is causing a third of the FFB range to result in the same power output. Similarly on the CSW V2 you can increase the FFB to over 100, but this doesn't make the maximum power of the wheel stronger, it just makes it get there earlier and clips the wheel's FFB. This is problematic because a game can't see it happen, you need to be able to somehow measure the force produced by the wheel, either by actually measuring it (a force gauge, some benchmarking tools like the WheelCheck program available on iRacing forums) or trying to feel when adding power stops making a difference.
    Ideally the wheel would produce 100% of its strength when the game is sending it a 100% FFB signal, 90% of its strength when sent 90% FFB signal, and so on. With that and a well setup in-game FFB that doesn't clip too much you can get both maximum power out of the wheel together with maximum information, making the FFB useful at telling you subtle things. And getting a more powerful wheel (like a direct drive servo wheel) will enable you to do that while bumping up the overall level of forces, making that "subtle" information less subtle and more obvious. =)

      +jubuttib Question. What would be the "Ideal" setting i should set my Thrustmaster Control Panel at and "In-Game" Settings at. I am just having a really frustrating time trying to wrap my head around all of this.

    I love how the final thought where Darin hoped for an ecosystem has come true. I'm picking the 599XX rim, T300RS Base, T3PA Pro pedals, and TH8A shifter up to get back into sim racing.

    Hello and thank you ISR for all your great videos! Earlier today I pasted a video link on my last comment of the problem I have encountered with my T300 wheel. Thrustmaster promptly contacted me back and is having me send the wheel in for repair. All I had to do was follow the simple instructions they emailed me. I posted this on here because I have heard negative things about Thrustmasters customer service and how you have to jump through hoops and cross your fingers to get anywhere with them. To me that was not the case. To sum up I thank you Darin for your great review of this wheel, I was leaning towards another fanatec wheel when your review persuaded me to buy the t300..

    Thank you for these T300 RS videos, my DFGT broke few days ago (ffb motor burned when I was playing GT6), and now I am planning to get this wheel because it's PS4 compatible and seems great quality.
    I assume the pedals are still better than the standard DFGT pedals? If yes, I am fine with them because I am not a hardcore sim racer.

      @simracingtonight  9 років тому

      MrSrimera Thanks and I'm not fond of the PC drivers Fanatec uses to implement force feedback. They're decent but Thrustmaster wheels since the T500 has always felt better IMO. The CSW has a smoother turning mechanism but I prefer Thrustmasters. For the price especially considering you could buy two T300s for the price of just the CSW base.

    Wondering if you can help me with a question, i recently bought the T300RS (still on the way to me), but wondering about the pedals, from the review i see you like a lot the Derek, and they seem great, from the review i saw they were tested a lot on PC, but wondering if they will also work on the PS4?

      Pabula Thanks for watching and for the comment. The DSD pedals won't work on the PS4 unless someone makes an adapter for them. They are for the PC only and require a stand alone USB port.

    • @kingcars
      @kingcars 8 років тому +17

      +Inside Sim Racing (same account, different profile) While the video was very informative on how to set up the wheel for different games, there didn't seem to be much discussion about how the wheel actually performed in the different games you tested. For example, in the Pros list, it was said to have very good FFB, but I don't recall seeing much of that discussed during the video. I would've liked to have seen more discussion put in that direction; was the FFB precise and strong (maybe some games moreso than others)? Was there any fade during long play sessions? Any compatibility issues? Perceived durability? Ergonomics? Some of this may have been covered, but it was either done very briefly and/or in the PS3 review; at least a few of these items should be significantly different enough from the PS3 to warrant discussion. Either way, hopefully this is helpful insight; I'm not looking to rain on anyone's parade :)

    Hey ISR, could you make a little bit of a more in-depth comparison of the T300RS and T500RS? I got a killer deal on a T500RS a while ago and have been loving it so far, but Formula cars and drifting have felt a bit weird to me. It's as if I'm not really feeling the slides and such as soon as I should, like the forces hit me a tenth of a second too late or something. I figured it was just a weird feeling I had because I wasn't used to wheel yet after switching from a G27.
    But then I was at the Custom Motor Show at Elmia last weekend and there's a simracing section that I spent quite a lot of time at (winning a gift card for setting the best lap around Lime Rock was among one of the things :D) and I got to try a T300RS there as well, it was on Assetto Corsa with a mod car on a mod track (think drift Evo or Silvia or something on Anderstorp) but the wheel just felt so incredibly smooth and on point, to the point where it almost feels like I regret getting the T500 over the T300 (even though I got it for less than a T300 new).
    The forces went through the wheel so well, the slightest change of direction and force hit me immediately and I had no trouble what so ever throwing that car around drifting and catching any little mistake. I don't know if it has something to do with the car and track, like it was smoother because the track didn't have all the little grainyness and bumps that Kunos add to their tracks, or what it was. I'm just wondering if there really is such a substantial difference between the too, because if there is I might actually sell my T500 and get a T300 instead. I remember reading/hearing about similar complaints around the time the T300RS came out but I can't find it any more, would love to know!

      Richard Anderson That's what i just bought a couple of weeks ago, but i have had to send the wheel back already which worked fine but the alcantara covering was starting to come off already and i had a small stone glued under the alcantara which was pissing me off. The after sales support was ok they paid for the shipping to get it back to them and they are sending me a new wheel now should be here any day now. I also just today bought a Thrustmaster shifter add on cause i didn't like the way the Fanatec shifter knob can rotate and has play in it, also the added adapter you have to buy from fanatec was pretty stupid i thought. That's my 5 cents!!!

    Does anyone know why the buttons seems to activate by themselves? Using the PS4 Pro currently, often get the game paused or the directional pad functions changing settings, sometimes sent back to home screen as if PS button has been pressed, it's very irritating for someone in the middle of a race.

I will never give up my T500 pedals. But tye 500 base in comparison to the 300. I know one is brushless and one is not. Also not all the buttons work on T500. Would like to know if I cam just get a T300 rim. Or should I switch out base and all because of brushless. Thanks in advance for your time.

    Right now the store price in Benelux of the T300RS is about that same as the T500. I would still pick the T500, since the pedals are much better and the wheel has proven durability.

      All the way, but anyway don't buy it. This model have a design isssues ( T300/TX ). In less of 6 months i've broked two wheels, all comming from cooling problems from the power supply and the ffb motor. If you want something better (but old) go for the T500 if you can.

    Hi from Paris, France Inside Sim Racing ;)
    I am changing my old Logitech Momo Racing to get a better experience, now that better/nicer games are available on PC (Assetto / Project Cars) ... but eventually, I can play on my PS3/PS4 or Xbox One ... but main usage will be on PC !
    I am very new in the Sim Racing community, as I didn't play with a wheel for 5 to 10 years by now.
    So, I am reading and watching many many reviews, and I am now hesitating between 2 wheels (and bases ... initially Fanatec was in my radar, but price is too high, and reliability sounds really bad ... especially with that kind of price) :
    - T500
    - T300
    Here in France and now (end-March 2015) they are both very close in terms of price (360€ vs 295€).
    T500 :
    - Pros : the motor seems stronger / more powerfull : better effects ?
    - Pros : 3 Pedals with good physical feeling on brakes (but wihout conical option as in the T3PA Pro ... but 169€ alone !!)
    - Pros :Fixed shifters available (even if I don't know for now if better or not than follow-paddles)
    - Cons : not brushless motor ? (durability issue ? reliability ?) more noise !
    - Cons : is there a switch to change mode for 1080 to 270° as on the T300 ? I don't know :(
    T300 :
    - Pros : Brushless Motor (durability ?) less noise ! ... precision in the effects ?
    - Pros : lighter ... precision in the effects ?
    - Pros : GTE Wheel can be "free" / included in the package ... with rotating paddles/shifters
    - Pros : mode 1080 & 270° : very good :)
    - Cons : no way to have fixed paddles/shifters ... which can be good but I don't know cause I never tried ... I need to compare, I believe ... but the possibility to choose (on the T500) sound a better choice :)
    - Cons : Pedals !!! Nothing to add : brake is badly implemented ... no clutch
    So, my choices are :
    - T500 for 360€ (+ GTE wheel @95€ if I don't like fixed paddles) => 460€
    - T300 GTE for 295 + T3PA Pro for 169 => 460€
    So finally : my question is : is it a better choice to get the T500 with good pedals + 2 wheels/rims ... or get a T300 and add good pedals for about the same price ?
    Or to summerize : is T300 base better than T500 for the same price ?
    Thanks for your help !

    How would you say it compares to say, the fanatec wheel bases? I have a dfgt at present and would look to upgrade in the future. Is the wheel noisy?
    I also noticed that the paddles on the 300 are now on the wheel, unlike the 500 which are on the base. Probably worth noting as that was a problem for many people.

    It's too bad we can't be playing Project CARS in the next few days since it got pushed back so far. I barely use my TX wheel anymore as Forza 5 is getting boring and I'm not getting Horizon 2 until I can get the T3pa pedals and shifter if they ever come back in stock. I really wish that sleek, premium wheel rim came on the TX and not that chunky plastic one. I'd love to get into PC gaming but my laptop isn't capable enough if I was to get a gaming PC I'd want to go all out but then I might as well go with Fanatec setup, and if I do all that I might as well upgrade my car while I'm at it lol. I had traded in my DFGT in and bought a used and tested TX wheel so I ended up only paying $200 so I'm sure in time used T300 wheels will be around $250 used. Hopefully this wheel has all the hardware issues worked out in it that caused a lot of problems in the TX wheels.

      I believe NSF Most Wanted doesn't have wheel support so you probably can't play that with a force feedback wheel, it's more made for games like Project CARS, F1 2015, Dirt Rally, Forza, Gran Turismo, Assetto Corsa, rFactor, iRacing etc. and this wheel works with PC, PS3 and PS4 :)

      it's programable in game to do whatever you like. has 3 positions. Real good use in the more in depth games would be fuel consumption qualifying, race, and fuel saving mode. other games like project cars you could set it to change the in game wheel screen modes. I personally find it versatile even though Darin didn't. Really useful especially if you don't have a button box.

    Hello, would you be able to offer a comment on how the wheel only compares to the clubsport V2? They both seem to use brushless motors, hall sensors and belt drive. The fanatec with a wheel ends up being 1000 in canada, where as the T300 wheel and crap pedals end up being 450. I'll be running clubsport V2 pedals and the fanatec shifter anyways.

    • @simracingtonight
      @simracingtonight  9 років тому +6

      lewisyang91 I just drove a Fanatec CSW V2 last week and it's a cool wheel, but not worth $600 more than the T300. Honestly, if they were priced the same, I would probably still take the T300. I just like the way force feedback is implemented with Thrustmaster overt Fanatec offerings.

    • @lewisyang91
      @lewisyang91 9 років тому

      Inside Sim Racing Sweet, that makes my decision MUCH easier =)
      Was initially pretty surprised that not more people compared the two wheels, as tech-wise they are very similar. There isn't an industry standard to put latency or sheer force on sim wheels so it's harder to judge that way, but even putting on the motor manufacturer would have been nice. Thanks for the fast reply, and keep up the awesome channel!

    • @mateo89fl

      lewisyang91 Don't believe anything Darin says about Fanatec. He used to work with them and they sacked him, that's why he is lying. They are expensive but they are in another league, only an idiot would take a T300 over a CSW for the same price.

    • @simracingtonight
      @simracingtonight  9 років тому +2

      plidex Incorrect ! I left Fanatec after he begged me to stay on longer. I LEFT due to their lack of quality control and testing to insure that the public is getting a product that won't fail. After seeing how things were behind the scenes, I didn't want my name associated with that company. Working for him was the biggest nightmare of my life. If you like equipment that has a high failure rate, go for Fanatec. When they work, it's good gear, but I don't trust any of it for my sim racing. I gave them fair reviews of product after I left. Think what you want Fanatafanboy, but you're very wrong.

      Fanatec Clubsport Wheelbase V2 is the best you can get, but out of most people's price range, so the T300 is probably the most practical option because it's very good and not as expensive as the Fanatec hardware :)
