- In this video, I go over the process of replacing the original BGA Core 2 Duo CPU in a Late-2009 Apple Mac Mini with a CPU socket, and upgrading the machine to a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo T9900. My only concern when starting this project was that the original CPU heatsink may not fit on properly, but to my surprise, it ended up fitting on just fine without having to modify it at all. With a CPU socket now installed, this machine is now the first fully upgradeable Late-2009 Mac Mini!

Exactly my question also. I have upgraded to catalina per your upgrade download and my early 2009 is overheating. Not sure if the os is too much for the 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or other problem.
Absolutely amazing to watch. I wonder if I'd give it a go if I had the tools. Just for the learning experience. I've experimented w/ custom cut copper sinks & for a Mini & my Mac Pro would like to try a heatpipe to casing utilizing its aluminium body as a giant sink as well.

@@jm036 Yeah, that diagnosis makes no sense. Even if Jobs made his own PCBs, there was never mercury involved. I could understand heavy metal poisoning, since PCB etchants are super acidic with ions of heavy metals.

That’s amazing! I would love to upgrade my 2012 Mac mini CPU and Graphics card if that’s possible so I can edit in Final Cut Pro better. I’ve already fusion drives my stock HD with an SSD and upgraded the RAM on it but that doesn’t take any soldering skills and I’m terrible at soldering

This is really impressive! Why does everything fit together, with the socket installed, without any issues? Not that that's a bad thing, it's just that I would think there'd be clearance issues.
The reason that the heatsink (and for that matter the whole computer) fits together without issues is because the A1176 (the 2006-2007 Mac Mini) and the A1283 (this Mac Mini) use many of the same parts. The 2006-2007 Mac Minis are socketed whereas the Early-Late 2009 Mac Minis are not. The chassis, heatsink and several other components are identical or near-identical.
What temperature would generally be used for something like this on the hot air?
Wouldn't it be possible to carve out a pocket in the socket plastic for the capacitor?

A bit late but apparently not. He has said in another video that the machine will post with a core 2 quad, but attempting to load macOS results in a freeze or kernel panic. Although if it's just a macOS issue, other operating systems may work, but I'm not sure

People have tried it but no boot. Someone would have to know how to code the bios. Clover might be able to trick the machine into thinking it is a different model.
I know that you've already said that the Core 2 Quad will kernel panic in a socketed setup like this (due to the core 2 quad not ever being a native cpu used by Apple) but I was wondering whenever you'd do something like this again, if you could show what happens with it and/or try and change some of the efi/SMC settings to make Mac OS think it's a generic Xeon processor or something along those lines(I.E. kind of how Hackintoshes work with desktop Core 2 Quads). I know your thing isn't fully firmware but I've just been curious if you could.

I'm using a q9650 in a hackintosh with nothing done to the kernel. It sees it as a Xeon, so unless the SMC or EFI on a real Mac is set to not function with it, there shouldn't be a problem on the software side.
The hardware side, OTOH, is where you can run into problems. For instance, you can put a 6000 or 9000 sequence Core 2 Quad into a 775-based iMac, but that doesn't mean it'll work because of wattage available. Though a Q9000 with an -S at the end (Q9550S, for instance) might work. For socket P though (which is this upgrade), there are a few quad core options. But they're silly expensive.
@@EweToobUsername I'm sure to get it working it'd either need to be a "binned" chip with a lower TDP but I was just curious. I'm sure that they made some kind of equivalent chip with similar TDP's to that of the mobile Core 2 Duos, but I haven't looked too hard so idk. It probably was though that the power reg. for the chip making his previous attempt kernel panic. Though, just speculation.
The problem lies in chipset and fsb. c2q mobile q9xxx were operating at fsb not possible under apples setup of nvidia chipset with 9400m gpu, and older machines with 965m and 945m intel chipset never had any support for c2q either. If apple used mobile chipsets supporting c2q there would be no problem, the issue is in hardware and thats why we never seen mbp pro with c2q. At the point of quad core relevance apple invested in 1st and 2nd gen core.

Not actually asking you to do it. More or less if it can be done. I have a GPD Win2 with 8GB of ram, but i found pin compatible ram chips from the exact same series.

The win2 has a fully unlocked, unrestricted bios. So any and all settings can be changed.

This might sound dilly, but this video started me thinking about whether a 2018 Mac Mini could be Frankensteined into a lower cost alternative to the new Mac Pro. Socket the processor to allow for a beefier CPU (more cores and/or faster clock speeds), max out the RAM, put it in a larger case to account for better cooling, and could one of the PCIe connections allocated for an SSD be used for an upgraded GPU (which would fit in the larger case)? Thoughts?

Good in concept but you'll need a better cooling system and power supply, and obviously you can't put 1.5 terabytes of RAM and a 28 core Xeon in it.

You are doing GODS work. My real question to you now is...what about GPU chips...any chance to upgrade them? They are the REAL bottleneck on aging machines.
KingCornWallis I’m pretty sure the GPU is integrated into the chipset, I don’t think it’s possible to replace the chipset with a better version, however I couldn’t see why an eGPU wouldn’t be possible if they have the PCIe WiFi card. I’ve owned quite a few 2009-2010 MacBook Pros and MacBooks but they don’t seem to use PCIe for WiFi so no eGPU for those. As for Mac Minis I’m not sure
Graphics chips do not have standard pinouts, they change for every generation (and even chips in the same generation don't necessarily have the same pinout). So it's not possible.
Maybe 9400 to 320m is possible?

Because it would be completely incompatible. Size, pins, design, FSB, etc. He just takes the most powerful CPU of the supported line of CPU's and allows it to be inserted. He does not change the design of the whole computer.

God, I wish I had the knowledge and equipment to do this. The 2.26Ghz processor in mine (exactly this machine) is so slow in Catalina.

if you have enough skills...
Be careful with some of these upgrades. There is no bios as the firmware is builtin and generally not changeable. Some machines WILL NOT work with some CPU's as the firmware never supported it to begin with. Make sure someone else has tried it first or you might find yourself with an extra cpu you can't use. Hope it works for you.
