Brilliant video explained and demonstrated really well enjoyed watching. ☺👍👍
Thank you.
Another great video Bob, well done. I do like the way it packs away, very tidy. With the extension bars for easier attachment, quick fit lock bolts & frame wedge, all great ideas. As a note, we have now added ON TOW signs to the sides & boot to make our tow car a little more obvious to other road users.
Thanks. I have a sign for the back now. Do you find the side signs help? Especially when overtaking a truck on the motorway that's 3 inches from the one in front of it and they start to edge out as you pass.... Oops there's a car there...
Hi Bob, Yes, we have had one or two occasions where drivers have been a little confused, especially pulling out of junctions, roundabouts etc and when visibility isn't ideal, we also have a dark coloured car, which doesn't help. So the side decals do work. That said, we have started to tape them to tape windows now as the magnets don't feel too strong & may blow off on the motorway !!
Good demo Bob and Jenny was very adept with the old vid too. The system looked a doddle to fit and looked well designed.
Thanks Bob, easy step by step guide to follow
Well done Bob, great video, I have exactly the same setup on my Peugeot 108 and I will do a full video on that including an explanation on the install and how the system works with current legislation.
Thank, look forward to that.
Hi Bob I believe you will not now be able to use the vehicles towing eye? using the Smart Glide fittings. Just hope you never have a need for it!
On the previous tow a frame screw in connectors the thread was changed so it was longer and stronger than the fitted one, so I couldn't use the original towing eye anyway. Recovery operators I have spoken to tell stories of the original towing eyes breaking. If the car was still towable I would use the motorhome to tow it home if the recovery company refused to use a perfectly good towing system. However, most reputable recovery companies wouldn't tow a car very far on a towing eye anyway, they'd put it on the back of the truck. mike@towaframe.com will be able to answer any technical questions.
Hi again Bob Did you keep your cars front panel ? I was thinking as the car has now been modified, you would have to inform your insurance company as the car is no longer standard. Should you sell the car, you would have to inform the new owner that this has been done to the car. I like the idea but is it all worth it? just to save a few more minutes over the screwing in the attachments on your the old setup? Please don't take this comment wrong, it's just an observation, not a criticism!
@@billtait9647 Thanks, no problems. To answer your questions, I didn't keep the original crash bar. I have informed both my insurers about the modifications, as you should do with any modification. I suppose when I come to sell it, it will probably be to someone who needs are car to tow. I'm not sure people would want to change screw in connectors for the twist and lock if they already have screw in ones. We were having them changed for demonstration purposes. Makes more sense if you are having a new installation though for the ease of use.
Nice upload bob.many thanks.drive safe mate.👊🏼
Look forward to your video on the Yorkshire show.👍😃👍😃
Used have Tow Bar for tow cars . Nice light bit of kit but hitchin up was a two person job line up had to be exact . That Smart Glide is the solution looks dead easy one person hook up. We tow a Fabia estate car so use a Armatige A frame with a jockey wheel its very heavy but one person can hook it up ok. Is reversing a short distance possible.
Yes, I can reverse a short distance, as there are no over run brakes involved.
Very interesting Bob, loved the Step by Step guide xx
I need to stop watching these videos in front of the missis ! “ why can’t we tow a little car like Bob and Jenny ?” Lol . I think I may have to admit defeat and try this reverse caravanning 👍🏻👍🏻😀
Thank you Bob for sharing.
In your opinion is it easier to tow a car than a caravan? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Would ever consider a caravan than a motorhome?
Don't know, I've never towed a caravan. A motorhome suits us perfectly at the moment. I've said before I'd like to try towing a caravan, just for the experience.
Thanks Bob. Very informative. Intend to tow a smart car but have got to get tow bar on motorhome. Do you know where the tow car brakeaway and electrics can be fitted so I can just fit the Tow Glide. Plymouth. Thankyou
The biggest and most difficult part is modifying the crash bar on the car to accept the Smart Glide. I suggest that you contact Tow A Frame, the number is in the description of the video.
Nice video as always, lacking poppy though.
System looks very well built and thought out , we just phone a well known car hire company who drop it at the site , works well but down side is excess on the hire car can be pricy if you dent it.
Thanks. Yes they are called Enterprise. Worst experience I ever had was when I wanted to hire a 4x4 from them in Glasgow. They were incompetent and downright dishonest. Spent 2 days trying to get the right car from them and it cost me £449 for that pleasure. We had to go into Manchester when we hired a car in Bury to get a car and that took into the afternoon. Other times around £275 each time. That's why we tow our own car. So much easier and actually cheaper over the 5 years that we've had the Tow A Frame system. We worked out that if we had hired a car each time we've used our own, in 5 years it would have cost £7500. The Tow A Frame system cost £2500.
Yeah, get that Bob.
Nervous driving with a grand excess
We are a family of 5 so towing a suitable car is not easy. Hence enterprise. We may have been lucky as it was a fair experience.
Keep driving safe
The Nissan Micra we looked at was a 5 seater, would be OK for smaller kids in the back.
Kids taller than me now, so Micra wouldn't work although nice car. Kids are well trained now, so converting van to travel mode is well rehearsed and takes 5 minutes. Needed car for isle of wight though , roads too narrow.
Not to mention ferry crossing costs
Give my regards to Jen and Poppy
Hi Bob looks good I have the old system, can the twist and lock be easily fitted to existing installation? Thanks Simon
Here's the video of us having our VW Up! upgraded to the new system. It took about 3 hours to do, if you' are interested, please email Mike@towaframe.com for prices etc. ua-cam.com/video/2l_QQph_K24/v-deo.html
Hi Simon, unfortunately you have to change the front crash bar to have the same twist and lock receiver as the bolts Bob shows in his video.
Thanks for info love the smart tow so will stay with the old system for now
Great video. The Tow a Frame Smart Glide system is impressive - having researched the systems available i think the Tow a Frame Glide and the Towmaster2 by lnb Towbars in Bristol appear very similar and the costs are also similar, around £2,800!......but haven't bought either.....yet! I note that Bridgend offer to fit the system to a new car achieving an overall saving, but the Nissan Micra does seem a bit big/heavy to tow behind a motorhome?
Depends on the specification of course, but it was around 1100kg, so about 100kg heavier I'd guess. Be nice to find out if that makes any difference towing. *hint* 😁😉
Very nice bob question can I tow a smart car with one of these ,at the moment we use a smart trailer ?
Yes you can - here's the full list of cars they can fit. www.towaframe.com/vehicle-list/
Hi Bob great video and is something we could use but a quick question how does it work without a key (a start button) as it looks like you leave the key in the ignition to remove the steering lock. Thanks again David
I don't know. Perhaps Mike at Tow A Frame could answer that.
This is the full list of cars they provide the system for - www.towaframe.com/vehicle-list/
Do tow-a-frame provide a bung/cover for the additional hole in the bumper? If not did you get one from VW?
The garage that fits it would provide one normally.
Hi Bob, Great video I have a question which insurance company do you inform re towing the car or motorhome company. kind regards John
You need to tell both, insurance is third party for the car when it is being towed.
Nice clear video - thank you! Could I ask what affect this has on the car insurance when being towed?
The car is third party only when being towed. You need to inform both insurers.
Thanks
Hi Bob, can you tell me if you have to notify your car insurance about the modification?
Always best to tell them about your A Frame. The car will probably only be covered third party when being towed.
Fantastic system and it looks like it makes connecting your car a lot easier
Excellent review Bob, i'm having my car converted and this type of A frame early next year, have you managed to use it a lot this year outwith the lockdown months, one of your other reviews of the older AFrame showed you screwing the bolts in using the toweye, does the new system have a turn and lock using the existing holes?
I have used the A Frame a fair bit this year post lockdown. I had a new crash bar fitted in January as you can't use the existing holes. There is a playlist of all my A frame videos.
Thanks bob , were would I get the other towing hitch done ? And do you know cost many thanks
Pete
Many of the install centres will fit towbars too.
hi bob i just had my towaframe fitted ,,i spoke to mike regarding the rear sign ,,he advised me not to fit the sign for legal reasons ,,not sure if you know about this ,,?
As far as I'm aware, all you to need to be legal are the triangular warning triangles as the car becomes a trailer. I didn't there was a legal reason not to fit the sign, I assume you mean the motorhome towing car tow-a-frame sign. I would double check with Mike on what he said.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo hi ,,i enquired why i never had a sign in my pack ,,he called me immediately saying he does not recommend saying you are towing car on the motorway ,,as you could be sued if there was an accident or similar ,,give him a call yourself see what you think might be good to put on your vids if hes correct ,,/
Thanks, I've emailed him.
Looks superb but £3299.99 plus
£119.99 for the storage bag is a frightening cost.
Yes, it was a bit cheaper when I had it fitted. Mind you, car trailers can be similar money and take you far more space.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo I’m just about to get my first motorhome, although it’s only 5.5m long. I have a 3rd generation Smart Fortwo and would like to tow it behind.
The twist to lock bolts are definitely a lot easier than the the threaded system you had. I also like the way it extends if you're a little short to the towball.
Nice one bob it looks a bearer system than the old one like the fact u can drive up to van and don't after be spot on ideal if u on your own if u have the old type like u had u can swap over without changing anything on car .kev
Looks like a good system
Smart glide seems a lot easier
Yes, much easier, makes it a one person job.
did you take handbrake off on the car lol
I can't get away with anything. 🙄👍👍
hi bob can it be reversed ??
Yes for a short distance, but easier to quickly unhook and drive out of the way.
Great blog you make it look so easy to attach and tow the car, could you do this again and let poppy attach the car to the motorhome this time
Lol, might be stretching it...
Our rotty fancies his chances with her methinks.he goes rushing up to tv,sits down wagging tail and drools .
Nice video. But it still looks a faff.
Not as much faff as hiring a car.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo That is true. Keep up the good work !
