  • Hello everyone and welcome to the channel and welcome to another video with the little Mini Cooper R50.
    In this video, I will be removing the rear brake calipers from the car and carrying out a refurbishment. This will involve a complete strip of the entire assembly, a thorough clean and then reassembly using brand new seals and pistons. I'll even be giving the caliper castings an attractive coat of paint for that fresh out of the box look.
    The rear calipers on this car were noted as having a very slight binding action on the last MOT and as such are in need of an overhaul to bring them back up to full working order.
    I have linked the rebuild kit below that I used in the video.

    Please double check your piston size before purchasing or ask the vendor to check using your registration number as some models do have larger diameter pistons fitted.
    For those that do not wish to rebuild the calipers but would rather replace the whole unit, a pair of rear calipers can be found at a very reasonable price at the link below.

    The caliper rewind toolkit that I used in the video can be found at the link below

    BMW also recommends that the anti-rattle springs on the calipers should be replaced if over 2 years old, linked below

    Awesome video Kev. Also busy rebuilding my rear callipers on a R53. Got everything done but after struggling for about 1hr20m to fit the spring back into the piston, i decided it was time to go to youtube for advice. Took me about three hours to find this video which relates to my calliper. Horrified when you did not demonstrate how to get the damn spring seated. Please if you have a moment, would really appreciate a short explanation of how to succeed.

    Any ideas on getting that spring in? Kev even a quick walk through of the way you got in would be amazing

      Found just pushing down progressively with something like a flat blade screwdriver until you can make it clip in under the lip at top works. Doesn't actually take a lot of force.

    That ultrasonic bath looks awesome. Do you put just normal tap water in it?

    I'm interested in how you installed and seated the internal piston spring. Bench vise and lots of cursing?

      As it happened, it went in really easily! I wish I had video’d it now!

      @@KevsShed Thanks for the reply but I'm interested in exactly what you used to seat the spring since it's larger than the piston opening. I'm struggling with seating mine.

    Youre lucky its not a clubman. the 2013 clubman outer boot doesn't stretch over the piston hole on the caliper.... it has to fit into a groove on the caliper making it difficult to fit once the piston is already screwed in. Cant find anyone thats done the rear with this different boot style.

    • @skylined5534
      @skylined5534 6 місяців тому

      I've come across those before. Pain in the assss.
      Fit boot first as you say (making sure it's fully seated in the groove) then fit piston and use a healthy smear of red rubber grease to ease things together and prevent the piston pulling the seal baxk out.
