    as a regular viewer of your fixit vids and a qualified mechanic for 30+ years i was impressed with this home engine service a few tips for next time firstly work on an engine thats up to temperature the oil flushes out better and the spark plugs come out better too trust me secondly remove the dipstick when refilling the oil it lets the air out and oil in most mechanics would refill the oil asap after changing the filter and not leave the cap off the engine (just good practice in case 1 you forget to fill it seen it done and 2 something drops in also seen it done ) but i was impressed you looked up what oil and how much was required and took the time to use a measuring jug also just to mention you forgot to tell us that when topping up the coolant use like for like if its red use red if blue use blue if green use green as there not mixable and lastly you forgot the fuel filter which should be done as part of an engine service so all in all a few tips for next time but do keep up the good work as your getting much better with electronics and i thought the dishwasher heater vid was awesome hope to see lots more in 20 20

    Spark plugs are screwed into the hottest part of the engine so it's very common for the repeated thermal cycles to seize them in the holes. There's some debate over whether to put anti-seize compound on spark plug threads and it probably depends on the particular spark plugs.

    You see that button in the oil filter housing. By this i dont mean the oil filter cap but whatever it screws into. You need to depress that button a few times to expel the old oil captured in this oil filter housing whilst the oil is draining. After depressing this, the old oil captured, trickles into the sump to be drained through the sump plug hole in the usual way. There won't be much old oil captured in the oil filter housing but its best to avoid contamination of new oil as much as possible. Hope this helps. My favourite part of your video was the spark plugs replacement and i am confident in tackling this video now. I have the exact same spec car. Thanks for showing this.

Also options on a multimeter to use for these checks?

    Just bought a fairly neglected one of these (poor thing). Thinking I will get a service done by a professional first time around just so they give it a really good check, (probably spend the car's worth again getting it MOT compliant), and then service it myself going forwards to save a bit of money considering it is fairly straight-forward work. Great video!

    Good work Vince. Just want to shine in on some information regarding the VW sump plug.
    If you have an OE sump plug the washer is made of steel and is not replaceable. The whole screw with washer is to be replaced if it looks bad.
    The plug is to be tightened to 30-35Nm, no more. The sealing surfaces are precision machined at the factory and will not leak.
    If it gets over torqued and you damage the threads(easily done) the sump has to be replaced or taken off and repaired at a machine shop. Have seen damaged threads sooo many times.

    • @GigsVT
      @GigsVT 4 роки тому +1

      a machine shop to tap the threads a size larger? Its not rocket surgery.

    • @mctobbsi

    Just a quick reminder: The O-Ring of the Filter Cap needs to be covered in oil, at least a little bit. So, use the old oil and simply go over the o-ring with your oil covered finger. This will ensure the O-Ring to fit where it belongs and prevent it from popping out of its groove in the cap.

    you know the MOT is the minimum safety standard a vehicle must meet, the advice given on a service although may not be an MOT fail is still very important and essential to both stay safe and prolong the life of your car, not to mention repairing things at first notice could save a lot of money in the long run as ignoring small issues an cause consequential damage down the line so anyone who just relies on an MOT for the inspection thinking theyre saving money and will be ok are most definatley not

I took the coil packs part and the service interval part (and I still have a removing the engine cover to put live) and put them on UA-cam as short videos. Most viewers don't want to watch a 25min vid to do one part of the job like the service interval, so hopefully those shorter vids will get some separate views in from non subscribers :-)
