I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at a very young age and while I agree, sometimes it can be a bit insensitive to assume someone’s autistic because of certain behavioural traits, I think as you can carry on through the series, Ben does have particular neurodivergent implications such being brighter than most others of his age, social awkwardness (to a certain degree), unaware of what others might be thinking or feeling, taking things very literal etc. Obviously, not all these apply to all neurodivergent people no matter what age and I can just be kids being kids as you said, but as an autistic person myself and wanting to work with them as a career, I think it’s fun to psychoanalyse characters and even real people if they have any special gifts.
PS: When it comes to autistic representation amongst the kids, I’m strictly referring to just Ben.

A diagnosis as a child enables someone to get the help that they need whereas the help and support is severely lacking for diagnosed adults so a younger diagnosis can indeed be better considering the support can fade out into adulthood.
If neurodiversity was more widely discussed and understood and more families, friends, colleagues and neighbours were willing to help people then any diagnosis of any neurodiversity should be needed. But we unfortunately live in a very neurotypical world where neurodiverse people are often ignored, left out and forgotten.

I’m autistic and was diagnosed at 13 it took 5 years to get a diagnosis and whether I showed traits or acted differently my parents and people around me just assumed that it was “kids being kids” or “she will grow out of it” I wish people noticed earlier because it ruined my school life I had to leave in year 7 bc I weren’t getting support and i knew I was different from other kids but didn’t know why. I do get what you’re trying to say but when a child has obvious traits it’s better to not wait.

Absolutely agree. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 16 despite showing countless stereotypical traits since I was a toddler. I failed out of school as well, left with no GSCEs, all because people repeatedly told me I'd grow out of it and refused me support or assesment. The mentality of 'kids being kids' is a direct result of the stigma surrounding neurodiversity. People think it's somehow insulting or damaging to suggest it, but it's far more damaging to be undiagnosed, especially for 'naughty' kids who are in need of support beyond simple discipline.

I'm neuro divergent but I never, ever behaved like Ben 😂 So that's that argument out the window.
