    Great tutorial on the atem. It was very helpful to me. I always wanted to know how to do an interview live. I was talking to a family memeber one day. He suggested use skype to interview him. Your video was right on time. Thank You so much for helping me figure it out. Keep up the great work brother. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

    If you are still looking for a scaler (or anyone else reading through the comments) the Extron RGB-HDMI 300 A RGB to HDMI Scaler is great. You can find them around $50 on eBay all the time and they have really granular control too.

    Can you have one camera be the primary audio source? My thought is run all of the audio to your mixer, then mixer to camera. Let the camera convert the analog audio to digital and send back to the switcher. As long as audio doesn't follow video, and that camera can be assigned as the only audio source: you could eliminate the A/D converter? Great video by the way, I really enjoy Blackmagic products too.

    Lon, we got the ATEM up & running thank you so much for your help. We did have a problem streaming due to the bandwidth.. My questions is can you stream from the same computer you have the ATEM set up on?
    We had the ATEM switcher set up on a PC but we streamed form a Mac so we could use the BlackMagic intensity extreme card via thunderbolt to capture & recorded video. The intensity extreme was connected to the ATEM via HDMI. We were not able to capture and record onto the external hard drive.We are still working on that. We did of course have an external monitor connected to the ATEM for multi-view. Worked great!

    I run Television Studio off an old macbook pro which I was able to upgrade to the 10.6.8 mac operating system. my even older macbook pro will not allow me to upgrade to 10.6.8 so I cannot run LIvestream Pro for producers software so I cannot find the stream I output usb 2.0 on my older mac. I want to be live on UA-cam not Livestream anymore. My question is, is there another software like live stream producer that I can run on an older operating system? If I try to run the newer mac book pro as the switcher and the output server it gets overwhelmed. I am outputting 720 60 on all cameras and have no hdmi input on either macbook pro to put image of desktop as a source. Also is there another way to show my desktop besides mirroring on a 2nd monitor and pointing a third camera at that monitor of my desktop.

    Have you reviewed the in-ear "bone" microphones? They mount in the ear, translate the vibrations from the bones of your ear into an electrical signal, then feed that directly to whatever you are recording/broadcasting to. It completely eliminates all other sounds as it only picks up the sounds you are making with your voice.

    Hey Lon, great video.. thank you! I have just some stupid questions to be sure I got everythig.
    - I need to make a live streaming on UA-cam through WireCast 5;
    - I have 2 Cameras (1 Canon EOS 600D and 1 Nikon D7000);
    - I'm going to buy 1 ATEM television Studio and 1 INTENSITY Shuttle or Extreme;
    So, in order to stream live on UA-cam I have to: (and here's the question) :)
    1) Connect the 2 cameras to ATEM via HDMI
    2) Connect the ATEM to INTENSITY via HDMI
    3) Connect the INTENSITY to my IMAC via Thunderbolt
    ... Then I open WireCast and I'll be able to use the 2 cameras and setup the youTube stream
    Is it correct everything correct, or am I missing something?
    (I just did a couple of live streaming on UA-cam in the past using wriest and the internal imac camera or a USB one, so it was easier to setup).. Now I need to use 2 external camera like I mentioned and it's little bit harder.
    Thanks for clarifying my doubts and congrats again for your videos.

      +Lon Seidman hi Lon thanks for that, since my work has already bought the production 1 me 4k, i have to design and implement the work flow with this unit in mind.
      I'm going to need a few BM mini converters to interconnect items but it is what it is.
      Would you know/shed some light on how I could send/integrate time code or wc into the BM vision mixer (to record program output into BM Media Express via BM decklink pcie sdi input on the computer) .
      As far as i can see: "ref in" on the BM 1m/e 4k will only accept tri/blackburst video reference.
      We will use a separate dedicated audio system and use the avid sync hd peripheral as house clock/reference.
      thanks mate, great channel!

    I am considering purchasing the Roland VR-4EX and I read a review that the Blackmagic ATEM was a better purchase. From what I have seen from you review, the only advantage that the Blackmagic has is the ability to record HD. It appears that you had to purchase a lot of additional equipment to do the same thing that the Roland does (which brought the overall price way above $1000 and your still limited with what the switcher can do.

    Hey Lon, great tutorials. They've been very helpful with our live streaming event. Quick question. We recently bought the ATEM 4K Production Studio 1 M/E, Teradek VidiU and Blackmagic Design Intensity Extreme device after watching your set of videos. We are doing a live stream today using it for the first time, and we couldn't get the ATEM to output to the live stream. Does the VidiU and Intensity unit do the same things because it seemed like they were redundant. We connected a Panasonic HVX-200 into the ATEM via HD/SDI inputs and the camera image was showing on the front of the ATEM switcher, but then we tried to hook the VidiU up to it and we weren't getting anywhere. We ended up just streaming directly from a different camera (Nikon DSLR via HDMI) to the VidiU as that was our backup plan, but we really would like to run it through the ATEM so we can do graphics as we're recording a basketball tournament and having the scores on the screen would be ideal. Any idea how we can get this setup working? Thanks again for all your help and insight!

    Hey, great presentation. I've been doing a lot of great stuff with the ATEM TV studio for multicam live webcasts. I was wondering why you use the Intensity box to get to your web streaming output/input connection. Why not use the usb H.264 output of the ATEM to go to your encoder? Is it a quality issue and if so, is it a big improvement over the H.264 on usb?

    Hi Lon, Thank you for your nice tutorial, but what do you think would be better the Kramer pro scaler (that can output the same resolution regarless of the input resolution) or the blackmagic ATEM? both would be about the same price. What kind of camera you have to have a really nice HD resolution. Can you post the list of converters and adapters if I want to run a set up like yours? Thanks you for your information I can get from your experience. And I will look forward to hear from you.

    Hey thanks for the response. So yes I do mainly stream to Livestream but that's kind of irrelevant. The main encoders I use, wether it's Wirecast Pro or Procaster are looking for an H.264 signal coming in through the USB port of my computer. Most basic webcams operate on an H.264 stream through USB as well. The encoder repurposes that for the CDN. I guess my follow up question is a what encoder are you using that acquires it's video from Thunderbolt and is it a big improvement in quality over using the switcher's H.264 output?

    Great videos Lon. I am a teacher trying to build a portable system for my students to learn on and use. Do you have a list (or diagram) of all what is hooked up on your ATEM Television studio. It seems you have a lot connected to the ATEM. We would use it for school activities and sports. We would ultimately like to stream video. Any help would be appreciated.

  • @FlashframeFilms
    @FlashframeFilms 10 років тому

    I seem to be losing something in translation. I'm not talking about streaming directly from the ATEM. I'm talking about connecting the ATEM's output directly to an encoder like say Wirecast. If I am doing a live webcast using Wirecast as my encoder, I would connect my ATEM to my encoding computer (running Wirecast) using the USB/H.264 output. Last I checked, Black Magic had not enabled the thunderbolt out on the ATEM .In your vid you are looping through your Hyperdeck to get a thunderbolt connection into your laptop. I go direct from ATEM to Laptop encoder (using USB). I assume Wirecast 5 can acquire video from the Thunderbolt port. My final question since I've now forgotten what my original was,what encoder are you using that is acquiring the video via Thunderbolt, and is it overly processor intensive in compressing that full bandwidth video down to several streams where the H.264 feed gives me a very efficient, compressable signal that I can encode to 3 different bitrates as well as record locally and it still looks great and gives me a good amount of cpu overhead. Thanks.

    Hi Lon, thanks for your channel. I'm looking to do the same thing you're doing with the ATEM, that is, using the Canon HF cameras you feature. My question: Do the cameras have to be in record mode to make the connection to the ATEM happen, or can they be in "non-record" or pause mode (or just connected). My Canon HF-G20, if not in record mode, goes into "store demo" mode if left unattended. So, typically, I don't want to record on the camcorders, just use them as cameras. Is this possible?

Do you have any experience with the: Teradek - VidiU On-Camera Wireless Streaming Video Encoder; the Ninja2 Recorder for backing up HD Proress 4.2.2; or the Atomos - Connect H2S Converter with 2600mAh Battery. I'm also looking to find if the analog audio processed by the Behringer SRC2496 24-Bit/96 kHz A/D-D/A can also be adjusted for delay. Are you experiencing any delay?

    TANKYOU for these nice reviews on ATEM Television Studio and further components. I small question from a German-speaking ;-) Can i use 720p beside 1080i or 1080p? Or is it strict: every input and the ourput on same resulution? For Info: i've a GoPro (1080p HDMI), a Canon HDV (HDMI 1080p) and a Canon AVCHD (720p). To use all three side by side i have to set ALL cameras to 720p? Or can the ATEM Television Studio mix 720p and 1080p?

    Has there been any kind of an update that allows this to do 1080P? I was really excited about this and about to buy it and then found out it doesn't do 1080P? 1080i is the stoneage, so I'm really hoping there's been some kind of update (besides the 4K switcher for $700 more)?

    I need advice on setting up for an upcoming shoot for a week of presentations at a camp meeting. I plan on using the blackmagic television studio switcher and recording to disk. Budget right now only allows for the blackmagic switcher. I need help to make sure that I can record multiple cameras, intro/outro graphic(s), powerpoint, possible videoblocks short clips, and then have it all recorded to my laptop in which I will then export the finished production to youtube and an external drive.
    My concern is making sure the live production can be completed and exported to youtube and an external hard drive without additional pieces of hardware/software. Can you please advise on this?

    What scaler did you end up getting? I want to use my MacBook Pro LapTop with the Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD... The Resolutions are 1024 X 640, 1280 X 800, 1440 X 900, 1680 X 1050, 1920 X 1200. so not sure if I need a scaler to get it to 1920 X 1080 or 1280 X 720

    Can you pull audio from one of the sources even if the inputs change. Like if someone is presenting on one camera but referring to different devices. Can you have the audio from one input present the whole time regardless of what input you switch to?

    With the ATEM TELEVISION STUDIO, you can't connect a switcher instead of software right?

    Hello. a query when I install the Software, I do not have the STING and DVE options enabled in the program. Any recommendation? or specific version for this type of Switcher?. Currently I install versions 8.7.1, 8.8 and in both the enabled options do not appear.
    this switcher do you have those options available in the program?

    Hi Lon,
    Really like this overview. Thanks!
    What are the specs on the MacBook Pro you use (memory, CPU speed, etc.)?
    Do/Can you use the same MBP for the Skype call, the ATEM interface, and the YT Live Stream simultaneously? Or do you record the show, edit in FCP, then upload?

    Lon, is it possible to attach a laptop to control the ATEM television studio without and ethernet port? I want to use a tiny laptop pc for the switching panel and none of them have ethernet so I'm stuck with a big old laptop that is cumbersome. I got an ethernet USB adaptor but it doesn't seem to work for the purpose of connecting the ATEM hardware.

    Hi Lon! You've helped me before and I hope you're able to help me again. :) At my workplace we have a laptop with the ATEM Television Software installed. That laptop is now dead, and I really need the software for an upcoming show this friday! Do you know if it is possible to download the software for free and install it on another PC?

      Thank you! Still having problems tho. I can't connect to the Software Control. I've searched all over the internet, and the IP addresses seem to be like they should be, but still no connection. According to the manual and several youtube tutorials, I should be up and running.

    Hi Lon, could you use two outputs of the ATEM simoultaneously, I mean record in a pc/mac with the usb and the hdmi to stream it with Intensity Extreme?

    Also taking the thunderbolt output into a MacBook Pro, does Google Hangouts and HOA have the option to select that camera input and how is the audio selected? Really appreciate your help.

    Hi Lon, I appreciate your previous response to my questions, however I'm still unable to figure out how to chroma key over a video. I tried it running a video from a pc over the cat5 with no luck, HDMI wouldn't work either due to it's built in copyright limitations. Am I missing something, I've just about pulled my hair out over this, lol

    Two last questions, I promise. Do you know if you can use an iPad to record the Skype calls? I know Apple has an HDMI to Lightning connector. However, I am not sure if you can mirror to the ATEM.
    Lastly, what CODEC should I use to record? I am going to use Final Cut Pro.
    Thanks!

    Oh wait. Your show isn't live so you're most likely not using an encoder but probably using the Intensity as capture hardware to FCP or some other editor. My understanding is that the switcher's H.264 output is meant to feed a live encoder.

    Hi, Thakns for the info. I'd like to know how to combine audio from a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 with the Atem Tv Studio. Do I have to plug the Saffire output into the Atem, or can they work connecting both into my iMac, just like if I were using software like wirecast? Thanks for the feedback.

    hello, very interesting review and setup. I also use a lot of blackmagick product, usually to get the videos online, on my channel. I am using windows and i found out that mixing two or more cameras, trough the the blackmagic video mixer (HDMI x 3 cameras) produce a HUGE amount of data. I am talking about 1 hour recordings going up to 400-500Gb. Obviously, i have no idea what to do next, at this point i am just recording 2 or 3 separate cameras, on SD cards, and mixing them, via Adobe Premiere, in order to get some normal 10-15 Gb footage. That's a lot of work and a lot of pain. Any advice, please?

    this looks good.. i just want something so that i can edit basic 2-3 camera shoots where the camera's don't move while i'm shooting.. so i don't have to finish and add another 3 hours of editing.. looks like this will work especially if i can get audio feed from hdmi out

    • @whiteboxweddingvideo

      So is it really as simple as plugging in the camera's to the studio then connecting output via usb to macbook pro which then records converted output immediately? I have C100's and 5d mark iii's and would be using the embedded audio from them. Also if you make a mistake can you go back and re-edit? ie. does the capture record all streams of video or only the mixed down edit? thanks for your reply it's a bit tough trying to get solid info. I would also think the output should be thunderbolt or at least usb3, usb2 seems to be quite limiting.

    A kit purchasing list, I've got an upcoming project for the local council in the UK where they want to stream the meeting live via HOA using a 3 camera setup. I'm still not totally clear on how to get the audio feed from the audio desk in the event hall into the intensity extreme via the breakout cable or do I need to feed it into the atem tv studio?
