    I think I have a bit to the point of "Does philosophy matter?" First of all, it seems fairly obvious to me that philosophy is most manifestly useful when it comes to morality and ethics. Many who are familiar with philosophy & the philosophers of history can't help but smile when listening to Sam Harris explain how one doesn't need to rely on philosophy, but can rely on science for morality, then going on to exactly describe David Hume's utilitarian ethic.
    We can go further and say that philosophy is important because if one is educated in philosophy, one can think deeper and question utilitarianism from a secular point of view -- ironically, Kant's views on ethics are the ones most often used to counter Hume, as well as a multitude of ethical dilemmas in which the utilitarian is forced to become a kind of remorseless psychopath should they stick to their guns.
    Personally, I like to use Kant's categorical imperative (basically, an improvement on the 'golden rule') as a starting point for any ethical conversation -- that being, 'a moral act is one which the actor can, in good conscience, will to become the universal norm.' -- not simply do what you want others to do to you, but do what you want others to do in general.
    And of course, the conversation can become more and more nuanced from there.
    Also, I would be remiss to leave out Sartre's atheistic existentialism as a popular branch of ontology in the secular crowd (whether they know it or not). Sartre was a French philosopher who proposed that the universe & the things/events within it do not carry their own inherent meaning or purpose, but that it is up to every individual to construct their own meanings/purposes within their mind. This is a philosophical naturalism which some like to say carries an 'ultimate responsibility' in that it says it is up to you to determine what the world around you is actually like & what you're going to do in it. (then, of course, we can have a discussion as to whether 'free will' & making choices is actually a thing, & whether that means a divorce of 'responsibility' and 'blame' -- but I'm getting off track).
    My point is, while science is of paramount importance, so is philosophy -- philosophy is best used as a tool to ask "What kind of person am I?" "What kind of world would I like to live in?" and "How ought I behave?"
    (And all of this is not to mention the cultural & historical insights an understanding of a philosophical point of view/the development of that point of view gives us.)

    • @dr.zoidberg8666
      @dr.zoidberg8666 9 років тому +1

      Dr. Zoidberg And let's not forget that the construction and meaning of language is an inherently philosophical endeavor. There is no reason why "tree" should actually be the symbol for the tall woody plants -- no scientific reason why it couldn't be any other jumble of sounds or symbols imaginable. Hell, there's no scientific reason why English grammar needs to work the way it does.
      These are all philosophical constructs without which, we simply could not do as a species.

    • @miaposamarie226

      Wouldn't you think that is far too complex for one Web cast?

    • @bocetet
      @bocetet 9 років тому +1

      Dr. Zoidberg Thanks, dr Zoidberg!
      Ethics is important, yes, but I don't see how philosophy helped us get answers to these questions. I'm not saying that because of that all answers are equally valid, of course they're not, but we cannot even use philosophy to compare answers on offer (to the best of my knowledge). The best tool for arguing ethics is to formulate arguments, create thought experiments that push these arguments into extremes or corner cases, and finding which ones feel most 'yucky' to us.
      Thinking about ethics is perfectly fine and valuable, but if philosophy doesn't offer us a tool to do it better, what is it for? Or is philosophy the very process of thinking about questions like ethics, with no structured methodology to lead us to correct or incrementally better answers?
      Your example of language being philosophy is confusing me. If anything, it plays into the idea that philosophy is just thinking about nonscientific or nondeterministic stuff. I don't think that's what you're trying to say, or am I reading you wrong? There are probably historical reasons why "tree" came to mean what it does, and history could have happened differently, leading us to call trees differently. Does providing reasons for facts that have no reason other than a sequence of small random events qualify as philosophy?
      I'm sincerely trying to understand. Thanks for reading, if you're reading this.

    • @aliks4794
      @aliks4794 9 років тому +1

      Dr. Zoidberg Sorry, I'm a tad confused - wasn't it Jeremy Bentham who proposed utilitarianism?

    • @aliks4794
      @aliks4794 9 років тому +2

      Dr. Zoidberg Though I do agree that philosophy is one of the more important disciplines, and is quite wrongfully shunned by the "Scientists". I'm not sure why such a negative stigma has been attached to the field, perhaps Heidegger used the word "Being" too many different ways, too many times :)
      What they all seem to forget is that Science came (and comes) from Philosophy. It was the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus who came up with the first primitive atomic theory, on which all of Chemistry is based from today. Hippocrates famously separated Medicine from philosophy - before that, they were the same thing.
      Philosophy's etymology sums it up quite nicely - philia sophia, the love of wisdom. It is practiced by everyone who thinks, whether they know what an ubermensch is or not. Furthermore, you're right in saying it is incredibly relevant certain fields, perhaps not so much in metaphysics, but incredibly so in ethics and epistemology.
      As an aside, my knee-jerk response to "Has any scientist's work been improved by Philosophy" was "Has any scientists work been improved by Art? Languages? Math?" It's seems like such a non-sequitur of a question.

    I've enjoyed a few of your podcasts in the past before and I always found it very helpful to hear the experiences of other people who had been indoctrinated, often as children. Well, when I was rebelling against my mothers religion, back when I was a teenager, my only way out of religious thinking was the forbidden thoughts. So when she told me I was no longer her child but a child of Satan, I relished in that thought, I had convinced myself that I was or should become the Anti-Christ to be free from Christianity. That since Jesus was living in my heart I had no other choice but to corrupt and taint my heart. I had violent delusions of final solutions and I even periodically idolized Hitler and dreamed of slaughtering even greater numbers of people, mainly the devout religious ones. Today many of these angers and delusions still persist in me and I've been seeing many therapists to help me cope with reality and unresolved emotional issues. But many of them still scoff at the idea, when I propose that religion and a life of indoctrination are at the root. I feel really lonely and often quite persecuted. Right now I am an atheist, been that way for a few years now, but the aftermath of religion still bears a toll on my sanity.

Like Trevor, i love my job and can empathise with everything Trevor said about the work. I know that my time in the job is limited so i am trying to enjoy it as much as i can. I have been in touch with other Firefighters and we would like to pass on our best wishes. If i could work for Trevor I would and there are plenty of other Firefighters in the QFES that would too. Is there something else I can do to help?
    I have some Service Patches i would like to send Trevor if at all possible. Even if you could let Trevor know that there are Firefighters in Australia that are wishing him and his family well.

    I don't see how homeschooling as a concept is defensible by anyone. It is unfeasible to control what's being taught to those kids and is therefore leaving the kids entirely to the discretion of their parent with no outside checks whatsoever. But then again, I've never understood the argument for tolerating parental religious indoctrination, either. That you have *made* the kids does not give you right to abuse them, and shutting them off from the outside world more often than not instills an untold number of psychological issues they would have to face later as adults. It may not be physical abuse, but fundamentalist religious indoctrination definitely *is* abuse.

      Bridget Wolfe If someone asks (as you have), I simply state that I don't really hold to A+ or require it. And I move on. I don't need to endorse or validate A+ ("Humanism" covers it for me, personally), and if that freaks somebody out, it really says more about them that it does about me. Regardless, I don't cheat my already busy inbox by dwelling on it.

      David Jones The problem is when tax money is spent on promoting particular religions. The police is a state institution that is supposed to serve all people, regardless of faith, or lack thereof. Christianity shouldn't be getting special treatment, even though it is the largest religion in the US.

    • @daveyjoneslocker4703
      @daveyjoneslocker4703 9 років тому

      Yes I understand that, and I am against those kind of phrases being on government buildings and such. But in this case these are individual police officers who typically keep and maintain a patrol car. If they want to personalize it in their own name, I don't really care. Now if the police station itself said in God we trust, I wouldn't be ok with that.

    • @TheThinkingAtheist
      @TheThinkingAtheist  9 років тому +9

      David Jones They're representing a taxpayer-funded entity pledged to serve all citizens. Let the officers put the stickers on their family cars and leave the police vehicles out of it.

    • @daveyjoneslocker4703
      @daveyjoneslocker4703 9 років тому

      I know it technically shouldn't be allowed on a government owned vehicle, but I just see it as self expression. I equate it to a government tax worker or teacher or someone decorating their office space. Yes it's a government position, and government owned property, so it shouldn't have any religious preference displayed, but it just doesn't bother me at all. What would bother me is if every car was required to have these "In God we Trust" stickers, or it was displayed on a government building. Yes, technically it shouldn't be there, but it just doesn't get to me at all.

    • @BerryTheBnnuy
      @BerryTheBnnuy 9 років тому +2

      David Jones Thing is, when cops are "on the clock" they are agents of the government and therefore their actions represent the government. They are not acting on their own behalf, but on behalf of the government.
      If you paid someone to do a job, and you didn't want them to make any statements about religion because it could be seen as oppressive to people who don't share those views, you'd probably fire them if they went around wearing a Jesus fish pin while wearing the uniform for your business and refused to adhere to the rules.
      Nobody's saying that the police officers shouldn't be religious. We're saying they should check that crap at the door when they clock in. Representatives of the government should behave in a manner that accurately represents the tone the government is supposed to set.

    Wish him well. We can't pray for him, but his letter has effected people, that's even better.
