Kola has really good match up knowledge against steve because he plays against ddee often and always beat him. The playstyle is the deciding factor. Ddee is more campy while Onin plays more aggressively. Good stuff though, it was a really close game 5.
no, he doesnt. look how badly he gets bodied by minecart the entire set. nearly all of onin's neutral wins are minecart. you realize all kola would have to do is jump over the minecart and put out nair or dair to either directly hit the minecart from above or not let the steve pop out and hit him which also hit him a BUNCH during this set. plus he has so many opportunities to outrange the minecart with bair or fair. it actually pisses me off how badly some top players play against steve. i love kola but i wish the meta wasnt so underdeveloped. this is honestly probably part of the reason why people hate steve so much. i mean, for God's sake, wtf do you even mean by "camping" and "aggressive"? i feel like they've become meaningless buzzwords for people who dont actually understand the gameplay going on.

@@pipermeyers7776 I don't even have problems with steve, he's my favorite character to watch. And Kola does have good matchup knowledge, onin was just the better player for this set. Kola is one of the only 2 to take acola to game 5 in the gimvitational and acola even said he was his hardest opponent for him, even onin said kola was the hardest for him. Also he was punishing minecart with bairs, fairs, and up smashes, onin was just able to mix up with his usage. Watch a set of kola vs ddee and you'll see how dominant he is against steve. Ddee's playstyle is defensive with his block placements, I should've worded it better rather than "campy", but with this one, onin was ready to box with kola that's why I said "aggressive"

I think Kola could've taken the whole tournament had he beaten Onin here. He looked deflated against Cosmos, which makes sense after you barely lose a game five against a Steve player.
Same thing happened with riddles this tournament. After onin beat him, riddles kinda gave up in losers finals

This is annoying tbh. Don’t anyone try to tell me kola hasn’t learned this matchup. The character has broken ass options, and even if you can read them, a mixup on a broken option is broken all the same. If they aren’t going to do another patch, Steve really shouldn’t be playable.

Not gonna pretend like Steve isn't broken or Kola doesn't know the mu, but I think Kola played pretty bad this set. So many unnecessary commitments with cross slash and fair that kept getting punished, like what's the point of playing Cloud into Steve if you're going to perma jump forward with a 18 frame start up move (and get hit by whatever aerial/minecart Steve throws out) instead of playing around your broken bair with tomahawk mixups.

Just like with Acola at the Gimvitational, Onin started struggling much more when he didn't have any iron to play with. And also like Acola at the Gimvitational, Onin's opponent would just sort of... sit back and watch while Onin mined more iron.
Yeah, and good luck stopping him from mining, when you are one fSmash away from just being blown away and unable to contest Steve mining for iron.
The fact that Steve forces this kind of situation when he is "behind" is outright cringe.

Of course, that doesn't mean you have to put yourself in harm's way, it just means you have to NOT literally run to the other side of the screen and give the resources to them for free.

Holy shit look at onin @ 14:33 he uses a block to protect himself from getting hit off stage and he also does it again @ 14:37 this guy does his homework on this character it’s very impressive.
I would say that’s just basic prep except I think he intentionally DI’ed upwards so he would hit the block, otherwise he would’ve gotten spiked. That’s actually kinda cool

I think ppl dislike Steve mostly because they’re super attached to their favorite players and the Steve hate train is an easy John. That’s not to say there aren’t real reasons, Steve’s generally slower gameplay and bare bones animations can make even unbiased people stray away from him, but I think it’s mostly bias

Yes justified Steve salt. He has better frame data than bayo in smash 4 and better options overall. Since he can’t be nerfed anymore this game will go downhill
@@tysontenney804 no. Bayo was clearly way more broken regardless. Ultimate is THE most balanced Smash game, and the Steve players are winning not just because Steve is good. They haven't fought any top 5 players because they aren't around, they HAVE been beaten by others before (so clearly you can adapt to them), and there is effective counterplay continuing to be discovered. They have an awful disadvantage state (no materials SUCKS), and they're not good offstage, easy to juggle (yes, even though they have Dair and Side B).
There are literally great counterpick options out there as well. You have Cloud, Sephiroth, Lucina/Marth, Hero, and probably even Dark Pit/Pit to name a few. The top players just have to utilize their tools better. Kola was doing great in some areas but was rather inconsistent in others, and Onin (being the good player he is) easily read through the mistakes Kola made, here. It's just facts.
If you allow Steve to mine as much as he wants and have him do the approaching? Will that work?
Maybe in some matchups… but in most, probably not
When he runs to start mining I just charge shot and find a good spot, I dont need to engage cuz I can also do range, its a slow match but it works for me 7 out of 10 times.

Imagine watching 3 sets in a row where all Moist members got robbed!? Kola's was the most tragic even though his was in winner's. For a second, I almost thought that Game 5 comeback was too bleak to be last hit.

It is just me or are steve players actively sandbagging slightly (or perhaps just choosing a more exciting game over a more optimal one)?
For one I feel like the build wall -> mine is almost always a net plus on resources but isn't used that much
For another I barely ever see the place block offstage and mine jank.
The latter especially feels quite broken. It forces your opponent to approach you from the air and quite a few characters can't really do that esp not against steve's up tilts or up smashes. I feel like it's worth at least forcing your opponent to counter that once.
The former is useful, but you do give up stage control and after a certain point resources become less useful.
For the latter, it’s just lame af and doesn’t even gain Steve that much. Especially with all the Steve hate I think it’s for the best that nobody rly does that

I don't understand the smash community's consistent hate toward slower/zoner characters. Just because you can't get in against a character or they make you play more slowly doesn't mean you should throw an immature temper tantrum about it. People have this mental construct about what smash 'should' be, and when anyone plays a zoner or slower character that has an equally valid spot in the game as the fast characters, these people stand up and are like "Hey you can't do that." If these players spent half the time they spend bitching about Steve actually practicing the matchup (and working on their mentality) instead, they'd likely see improvements in their results.

traditionally, the powerful keep away tools of zoners are balanced by making them struggle when their opponent finds a way in. the problem with steve (and ultimate in general, imo) is that he has absurd close quarters frame data on top of his incredible ability to camp. as a result, he feels overtuned.

its mostly because smash ultimate is fully of awfully designed charatcers. Its really dumb for zoners to have good boxing options when you egt up close. That literally defeats the purpose of them having good zonning tools.

It's so funny how people think this is a better or more skill intensive game than smash 4 even though you'd never see this happen in 4 lmao. Random kids who haven't finished high school are beating players who have been playing since brawl lol. This game is trash, smash 4 was slower but definitely more skill based. I honestly hope Steve continues to dominate along with Kazuya etc. just so people see this game for what it really is
Factually untrue. Many Bayonetta players who had not beaten pro players and who were still in high school started winning against established professionals. I point to EVO grand finals with Lima and Captain Zack as a good example of this, both of whom were very young.

@@blazebosma8146 It wasn't as quickly or on the same scale as this. Not even close, we're talking every tournament here and it's literally a new random kid every time. By that point in smash 4s life, Zack had already been playing for a while and tbh the smash 4 community was almost nonexistent by then. Edit: I'd also add that Bayo was basically the only character being exploited to that degree. Maybe Cloud but not as much. This game has several characters like that. Steve is just the funniest example
