Turns out you're not just very educated and insightful with design history and theory, but you're a fucking brilliant designer yourself! I'm in love with your Angel comedy club branding. Insanely pleasant and feels very fresh, especially when compared to the examples in your presentation. Keep up the great work!

Since the 00s are in and the 70s were in in the 00s and the 30s were in in the 70s, is Art Deco back?

To some degree! We live in a more fractured visual culture now, but certainly the Great Gatsby film with Leo DiCaprio kicked off a bit of a wave of contemporary Deco inspired aesthetic styles.

@@LinusBoman Not sure if this is true, but at least it feels to me like we have arrived at a accessible minimalistic “sans” style which is used as the standard style with alternative styles being “retro” styles. This feels especially true for bean’s identities and interfaces, but can also be projected onto fonts, where stylized fonts are only used sparely with simple fonts being used in most cases.

I think the Art Deco design prompts still do a great deal of heavy lifting when it comes to a perpetually stylish, classy aesthetic. I still love it!

i'm a bit proud that i recognized the Recursive Sans before you mentioned it 😊. but it's a pretty unique font, not only because it's variable across 4 dimensions.

Brilliant in depth analysis of emotion evoking design in both this and the icon video. I have been working on my branding which is to convey a humorous side to whisky reviewing. Funnily enough I ended up using the Shrikhand font which has similarities to the font you used. In fact, following this I may try Fraunces due to it has less of an angle allowing for better readability. Also a lot more weights to it. Looking forward to more design deep dives. Cheers.

The Comedy Store logo reminds me of the Monty Phyton Flying Circus... maybe this TV show logo had some influence too hehehe

Two big interets of mine meshed together, stand up and design, wonderful! I hope you can get the chance to check out the design in many "Stand Up Records" comedy albums, maybe do a top tier list like you've done with the music albums! Anyways, great content as always

I kind of think that the live at the apollo logo isn't that bad. As a logo it is not ‘good’ either, but i find that evoking the gigantic lightbulb-letters from the venue captures its uniqueness

Similar to your other video about Cowboy Bebop's intro, there's an audio/video sync problem in the recently recorded bits. Thankfully, the parts recorded for the conference are synced correctly.

I respect most of your historical analysis and your observations of factual history, but the judgments as to the quality of especially well designed but possibly boring logo choices and font choices is a little shortsighted.
Design isn’t just about pure artistic integrity, nor is it always about pushing the envelope.
I learned this many years ago when I was doing website design for an engineering company. I created a very sophisticated cutting edge design for them, and they rejected it for this reason: their customers would see them as being frivolous for having such a high-end design look. What they explain to me is that they needed a website that reflected the values of an engineering company. That is to say, function over everything else.
When I redesigned the proposal, I took this into account, and while proportions and color were done correctly in my view, they were satisfied that it looked more like what an engineering company would do.
The lesson this taught me was that you have to understand the audience for your product. It’s not enough to say this is a good logo, you have to ask the question is this a good logo for this business, and for their customers?
As a result, it is in my view shortsighted to label something as so cliché as to be terrible. Yes, there are functionally bad designs, designs which are impossible to read, or which don’t communicate what is being offered whether it be an auto dealership, and engineering company, or a comedy club.
But to simply say that because someone is using skeuomorphism means that the choices that they’ve made are terrible does not take into account what their audience may be.
I have also been in comedy design for many years, and what I’ve noticed is there is a divide between the comedy aficionado and the civilian comedy audience. Thus, a design that reflects a literal marquee may grate against your design sensibilities, but it may be the perfect design to bring in the large audience that's necessary to keep a comedy club in business. Every club has to balance their desire to seem cool with their desire to bring in as many people as possible so that they can pay their bills.
Since you’ve been around comedy clubs for quite some time, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Most comedy clubs are small and just barely getting by. They have to make hard choices with everything that they do in order to make sure that they can stay afloat. Very few comedy venues, in fact very few live entertainment venues in general, are always in the black. So they make choices that they hope will make them appeal to as many potential ticket buyers as possible. I would not fault them for that, even if their design choices were ones that I personally would not like.
Finally, I think your harsh opinion about the marquee style literal logo is misplaced. Sure, it’s not innovative, but there’s nothing actually wrong with it. I am certain I could show you logos that actually are terrible. These ones are just boring, and I don’t think they deserve the kind of vitriol that you’ve given them.

Hey Eliot, thanks for sharing your perspective. It's been over 2 years so I don't recall this one super clearly -- I don't remember being especially vitriolic? But I suppose I may have been a bit more openly opinionated since the core audience for this one was other designers and typographers, not the general audience - it's entirely possibly I was over-dismissive and perhaps a bit harsh. I hope you were able to take some interesting history out of it nonetheless. Cheers.

@@LinusBoman Fair, I can sometimes fail to remember what I've said last week! But yeah, with only a little humor, you mentioned that something was the worst ever or similar :^)
And I'm also a designer, I've designed plenty of promotional stuff for improv and sketch clubs here in L.A., you got dangerously close to mentioning some of them ;^)
