Interview with Martin Gonzalez (Billy Club Sandwich)

Oral history with Martin Gonzalez, vocalist for Billy Club Sandwich (as well as Goatamentise and Brass Knuckle Brigade), recorded on February 10, 2024, as part of the "Uptown Rumble: Heavy Music in The Bronx" project at The Bronx County Historical Society. The interviewer is Steven Payne, director of The Bronx County Historical Society.
In his oral history, Martin speaks about his family's background in the Dominican Republic and spending the first part of his childhood in a more rural area there before moving to the South Bronx. He remembers what it was like growing up in The Bronx, the schools he attended, getting into heavier music through popular bands like Poison and by the influence of his cousin, Barry (of Goatamentise) welcoming him into the group of metal heads and taking him under his wing at Alfred E. Smith high school, getting introduced to bands like Sepultura and Deicide, some of the first metal shows he attended in New York, the challenges he faced being a metal head while growing up in his neighborhood, being introduced to hardcore and his transformation into a hardcore kid, joining Goatamentise as the vocalist when the band formed and their first shows, the unique combination of death metal and hardcore that went into Goatmentise's sound, joining up with Billy Club Sandwich (BCS) and leaving Goatamentise, the decision to write songs in both Spanish and English with BCS and how this was received at shows, shows in The Bronx and greater NYC with BCS, the experience recording with the band and how the recording sessions evolved over time; BCS's tours to Puerto Rico, Europe, and Japan; the first extended break of BCS in 2010 and how the band eventually started coming back together, future hopes for BCS and a new project for Martin called the Brass Knuckle Brigade, and people from the scene who have passed over the years.
