Sounds great, but is this Hello Fresh offer available in the USA? I enjoyed the food comparisons even though I live in the USA and travel to the UK occasionally and the information may be helpful while visiting. It is fun learning about the food of different countries.
As a regular Waitrose shopper, I have to weigh in here with my thoughts.
1. One reason I shop at Waitrose is because of all the products they sell that other supermarkets just don't. I saw Grackle's video, and she pointed this out, too.
2. Another reason I shop at Waitrose is because I buy organic wherever possible, and Waitrose has the largest range of organic products of any UK supermarket.
3. Many of Waitrose's own brand products contain fewer additives (emulsifiers, preservatives, etc.) than comparable products from other supermarkets, so if you really care about the quality of the food you're consuming, Waitrose has you covered (disclaimer: always read labels)
Also, I have to comment on your comparison of a Melton Mowbray pork pie (Waitrose) versus a non-Melton Mowbray pork pie (Aldi). What you'll find is that any Melton Mowbray pork pie, from any supermarket, has a fixed set of ingredients and will have been made by one of a handful of factories in/around Melton Mowbray. Any other pork pie will have different ingredients, so shouldn't really be compared.
Finally, but still on the subject of pork pies...Alanna, you mentioned eating the pork pies cold as if to suggest you would heat them up if you had time! I've never heard of anyone heating up a pork pie before! They should be enjoyed at slightly cooler than room temperature, i.e., having been taken out of the fridge perhaps half an hour before eating. You'll find that the labels on Melton Mowbray pork pies suggest this.
Here in the bit of North Yorkshire where I live we have pie and peas suppers which are warm pork pies with mushy peas - seriously, seriously good!
I buy Waitrose stuff when it's on offer.
They've got by far the best range of Indian and Chinese ready meals. Keralan chicken, veg biryani, a daal and 2 naans and homemade raita is a great meal.

Avocados seem to be 89p with Aldi price fixing. 65p in M&S. Meh, stupid doesn't deserve good.
It was a little unfair comparing a standard pork pie with a Melton Mobray pork pie. Both shops sell the latter and it would be interesting to see how like for like compare. As it was, it's like comparing a generic pork sausage with a Cumberland sausage, they're not completely different but they're certainly not the same.
Aldi do a 'Specially Selected Melton Mowbray' and they're good...I get one every week. 1.99 now for 295g pie. Should have used that...not the bland cheapo 4 for a quid pies.
Could do a whole video just on pork pies.
have a look in a 'HUGE' Tesco for 'pork and pickle' pie - a lot less fat, and tastier! they sometimes are at my local Waitrose, but disappear fast!
I was a shelf-stacker on nights at Waitrose back in the day. The price for Stella Artois and fags was the same as the rest of the world. That's all I cared about. I brought my own dinner and went Tesco on the way home in the morning haha 😅

Hi Alanna, it can tell you a lot if you read the small print, to see who actually made it. Unless you're buying things that are made, or baked in the store, there's a good chance that several store brands, and a premium brand, could all have been made by the same manufacturer. A relative of mine works for a well-known bakery. They produce their own brand, and supply to many major supermarkets and convenience stores, packaged as the stores own brand. They're often the exact same recipe, or maybe a store has a choice of quality, and the difference is only an extra scoop of some ingredient, or the grade of flour used in each mix.

My sis-in-law used to work at Aldi, and the people who supplied the packets of cooked ham also supplied the same to M & S, and they (Aldi) would quite often get M & S branded packets of ham included in their delivery. Similarly, a neighbour worked at a well known biscuit and cracker manufacturer and she told us they supplied Aldi branded 'biscuits for cheese' and it was literally just swapping the box at the end of the production line, and exactly the same contents as their own branded product.
Yes, my relative said exactly the same, some items are exactly the same and people pay for the packaging and name. They bake a large batch of a product, and the same batch could go into several store's own brand packaging, as well as the factory's well-known premium brand.

I shop at both Waitrose and Aldi, using the latter for a few things I like, which include their French coffee beans, some of the wines and some of their biscuits.
If you are going to buy out of season fruit like strawberries, then just expect from the international industrial machine something which has something vaguely reminiscent of strawberries, not the real deal!

Really good reviews, and pretty much in line with my own experiences. I shop at Waitrose, but also Co-Op, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsburys, Asda, Tesco, etc.
In general - you get what you pay for. Pay more for a sausage roll, pork pie, or back of crisps - and you are going to get a better tasting product. But sometimes you don't need to get the absolute best. Because you don't.
The glory of a free-market system is that we have choices. And I'm oh so happy that we are blessed with the choices that we do. And even more glad we get to watch a lovely transplanted Canadian young lady chowing down on packaged crisps and chilled sausage rolls.

I used to date a woman who worked for the company that developed Waitrose own brand food. She worked on the pulled pork sausage rolls which were so good!

Agree with you on the inferior quality of Aldi scotch eggs. Normally, I'm happy to compromise a bit on taste if something is cheaper, but those scotch eggs need to be binned.
If you want the best sausage rolls, you'll have to wait until December, as that's when M&S do their turkey & cranberry Christmas special sausage rolls; they are 17 out of 17.

I spent half about a year living in Wapping, London (pandemic time) and, where I was the only big grocery store was a Waitrose. So, I kinda had to do all my shopping there. Yes, it was a bit more expensive but I did really appreciate that place. (when I wasn't waiting outside in the queue to be allowed in)

Agreed on the cheese at Aldi. I love their continental special selections like their extra mature Gouda and their special select Cheddars are great too. I do like the produce from Waitrose, unfotunately my local Waitrose is a bit pokey. Except for the booze dept' which is decent.
I've had that steak sandwich myself and I completely agree with you. It's the best sandwich I've had from a supermarket.

M&S has overtaken Waitrose of late with some prices but often better quality, the John Lewes Partnership is struggling financially lately. The Partners, all the staff, have had their annual bonus reduced.
Dammit, I have to go to Lidl to get some bakewell tarts. And now, having been, I can tell you that they are very good.

Nice video, but in future home picnics 😄it would be a good idea to always put the 'price per unit' (£/g) under your price tags (each side of screen).
This is very true now with all the trickery going on with sizes - shrinkflation and all that.
It is a better comparison of value for money (starting point), then take the quality, taste, etc into account.

I tend to go to both for different reasons. If I want something specific that is hard to find (a specialist ingredient) I might go to Waitrose but now I live in a city I've found the local International Market is much better for that, and it's just round the corner from the closest Waitrose so no point going to Waitrose anymore I suppose. ALDI or LIDL (usually the latter for me as its more convenient) I will go to more often for the basics.

Agree, for quality big snacks Waitrose comes out tops (I think cooking pies etc the larger sizes seem to win plus there is usually less crust/coating which means the filling wins out). Not surprised about the cheese and fruits, I find that Aldi fruit and veg compares well with all the more expensive supermarkets.

I gave Hello Fresh a try a while ago but they are just a bit too expensive for my budget. Have to completely agree about the quality of ingredients and instructions (I can burn water) - absolutely top class.
One way of 'uping' a cheap sausage roll is to carefully pry the pastry open and put some nice cheese in there before heating them up.
It used to be that a good vibrant orange hue to the yolk of an egg was a sure sign that they were by hens with a proper outdoor lifestyle where they got plenty of bugs etc to eat. These days though the large scale egg producers have caught on and add supplements to the feed which can give the same colour.
ALDI is now opening stores across America and are quickly becoming very popular...

Aldi opened it's first US store in Iowa in 1976. Currently there's around 2000+ Aldi stores in the US.

Nice to know nothing has changed- we left the UK in 2008 and we used to stop off at the Aldi supermarket and pick up a dozen things that were inexpensive but we knew were still good including their mature cheddar and there was packs of pretty decent crisps (chips) but not any processed meat products though from Aldi. Then we nipped on to Waitrose and by they stuff that really mattered for quality. We had discounts with the Waitrose credit card and watched out for offers. Put together we eat well. Oh we also had a farm shop to call in on the way back that had some great processed meat products and cereals etc. Looks like the UK still has some excellent food products. ( we live in Texas at present, foodwise a whole different ball game)
Alanna if you want a large selection of cheeses ...try a large morrisons .
Not sure if others would agree..yet they have a dedicated section to cheese ...breads.... poultry ....fush etc...

Morrisons by far the better supermarket for their own products. They only (relatively) recently started the Tesco version of price reduction - a little regularly throughout the day but their own farm joints are straight to half-price (got a 1Kg pork loin joint for £3.50). Mainly due to what I buy I have never found Aldi/Lidl cheap, it's all about the alternative products they sell. Tesco is more for clubcard and families, Sainsburys have a weird mix of expensive and reasonable, Asda & Morrisons (in my local ones) have a better selection of fruit, salads, meat & seafood. Waitrose & M&S have better quality but only you can decide if the extra cost is worth that. As most prices are set by the manufacturer it is rare to see any of them have great pricing unless, as I said, they are the producer.
You have to try the London cheesecakes from Aldi.
They are my current favourite of pastries.
BTW, it’s not a cheesecake, it’s puff pastry with some sort of raspberry centre and then topped with loads of coconut strands in a sticky icing.

The mention about the pronunciation of bournville I think that it comes from Cadbury Bournville as they supplied the chocolate and so it became less like the way of how you say it, over time it just stuck regardless of the brand making them, I am guessing a little here but I have been to cadbury world and they did talk about brand names etc, but it was a long time ago (15+ years).
Sausage Rolls - You have to try the M&S one's they are soooooo nice.
Bakewell tarts contain Frangipane, which totally doesn't sound made up. One way to wind someone up would be to replace the word moist, with damp. "This cake is nice and damp" :-)
Food, glorious food. The only salt and vinegar crispa I eat are Disco's, which I love but my favourites are classic roast chicken or prawn cocktail. I don't got to Waitrose (too expensive) but I do go to Aldi, although it can be very mixed. Some is fantastic and easily equal to other stores but some (like tinned tuna) is terrible.
went in both of these today. £5 meal deal in watrose, with the coconut water veggie sushi snack and a butty. later i grabbed some soya milk and fabric softener in aldi on my way home. i did a taste test, the nocterell olives were as good in both, less good in asda and sainsburys, but aldi had twice as many and a third of the price. also garlic bread(iceland was by far the worst) hummus a couple of other things. these are the 5 shops it is easy to get to. we blind tested everything, popped on the same type plate shuffled so no one knew which was which.
i just had a large plate of homemade mushroom and tomato sauce with pasta, it was delicious i'm stuffed and yes you are making me feel hungry
Interesting taste test- particularly which things are worth paying more for.
But I have to point out that comparing a Melton Mowbray Pork Pie with a non MM one is not a fair test- they are two entirly different recipes. The meat used in MM pies is fresh pork which is naturally grey when cooked, liked roast pork, not pink like other pork pies which use cured pork.Both shops sell both types.
I ate my meal during the video so that staved off ths hunger 😂 Try the Aldi Brtatwurst if they still make it. They're tasty!

Oh, it's always fun to see one of these videos! The title immediately prompted me to consider that I have membership of a professional organisation giving me discounts in various supermarkets, including both of those featured here. I can get 6% off in one of them, and 4% off in the other. Can you guess which way round they are? (Here's a clue: I can also get 6% off in M&S and 4% off in Sainsbury's...)
Watching this with the subtitles on made it look as if the UK is in the grip of hyper-inflation: when you said the cheese was £2.60 / £2.49, they said "$260 / $249" .... so either the pound is VERY strong against the dollar or cheese is bl**dy expensive even in Aldi!
Once upon a time, Aldi was the butt of one comedian's joke that it's essentially a refugee camp for abused food. Perhaps that opinion deserves re-evaluating. In the face of economic challenges, Brits have turned to it in order to obtain good quality at lower prices. I find it somewhat hit and miss myself; some products are definitely on a par with their counterparts though you won't likely find the creme-de-la-creme there. Conversely, Waitrose has things in it that very few people would be interested in outside of the higher echelons of British society. It's no wonder that they've become exclusive retailers of King (formerly Prince) Charles' Duchy Originals brand. Of course, they're the supermarket of the John Lewis Partnership, whose motto has long been "never knowingly undersold."
There are endless permutations to this taste-testing business. I wonder if you'd consider doing budget store vs. budget store - Aldi vs. Lidl - or maybe pit Lidl against M&S or against Sainsbury's? Here's another thought: in the parallel universe where you moved to live in the North of England, Alanna, you could have done this video as Booths vs. Asda....

In Market Harborough Aldi and Waitrose are next door so you can visit Aldi and then go to Waitrose for the stuff Aldi doesn't sell.

Alanna, I filmed an ALDI video today but I swear I wasn't copying you... I've had it planned for months. I loved this video! So interesting to see a taste test!! Makes me want to go shop at Waitrose right now! BTW, they have excellent store brand popcorn too ;-)
I'm usually driven by prices of products, so I would likely sacrifice quality over cost. I suppose it depends on whatever I'm buying.

If you REALLY want an upmarket supermarket, you need to come to the northwest of England and shop at Booths. It's often referred to as 'the Waitrose of the North', but IME, it's heaps better.
I buy most of my basics at Aldi or Lidl, but visit Booths regularly for specific things and for yellow stickers. The savings made at Aldi & LIdl pay for my President French butter-blended-with-cream, Scottish morning goods and other yummies!
Up market to a northerner is pound land. I have been to the north and oh my god it’s grim compared to the south - avoid at all costs
well if you believe the 'daily mail' (google does :/ ) waitrose is expensive BUT they FORGOT that M&S is MORE expensive..... :O and the furthest south 'Booths' is manchester..

There is an art to shopping in Waitrose. Their own brand stuff is really good quality. I stick to that. If I need any branded stuff I'll go to Asda where it's cheaper.

Nuts, seeds and dried fruit such as apricots are excellent products from AlDI compared with other supermarkets, the apricots especially are far superior and plentiful compared to other brands.
Melton Mowbray pork pies are also available from ALDI so you should have compared like for like.
Try cheese and onion crisps! And if you want to go back in time try walking around the pavements at 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. with an open bag of chips smothered in salt and vinegar; well that's how I grew up, and do I miss it!

Waitrose and M&S are competitive with the rest of the market for basics, the difference is they carry a lot more premium products. I shop at M&S as it's in walking distance, and living in London having a car is a pain in the arse.

An excellent comparison, thanks! With the price you pay there, would hope that Waitrose is better overall, but Aldi did OK in many cases. I use Aldi quite a lot since a new branch opened near me last year. Overall quality is very good there. You do get what you pay for for some things like pork pies and Scotch eggs though. All the supermarkets have cheap and nasty pork pies. I did try a proper Melton Mowbray pork pie from Aldi recently, which was really good.
The difference between Aldi and Waitrose in aldi the check out is a Olympic sport and in Waitrose it's a posh push with your trolley in the car park as in f off to the trolley.😂😂

Heaton Park in Manchester, where I live. Is only a 5 minute walk away and it's full of picnickers every weekend.
A melton mowbry pork pie is a totally different beast to an ordinary pork pie.

Waitrose essential is their budget range so there shouldn't be a lot of difference. Aldi's cheese is always pretty good.

My favourite crisps are salt and vinger as well, my family hate them which means more for me. I think expensive and quality applies to most things with meat as when something is really cheap and has meat in it I question the quality. Like buying basic 10 frozen beef burgers for £2-3 from Tesco won't be the same as 2 finest burgers for £3-4.

Aldi do good Crisps, actually all their salted snacks are good.
I get most of my Cheddar from Aldi, their Quality is top and just as good as any of the "top brands"
The Morissons Scotch Egg looked very good, but many Butchers do 'em super good as well.
Oh boy, when that first Pork Roll came up close and big to the screen, I tried to snatch it out of your hand..., not had one of those in yonks! Now you've got me yearning! Good video, enjoyed it all, although while watching, I was simultaneously eating a bag of Coop Cheese & Onion crisps, while swigging at a Beer to disolve the excessive salt on 'em.
Not sure if it's just my town, but the CO-OP's version of all your tested products here are way more expensive then Waitrose.
