I LOVE this!! Sometimes i end up really caught up in the frames of the paintings more than the paintings themselves. It's mind boggling to me that we only talk about the art of the canvas when there's an equally gorgeous piece of carved art right on it that gets completely ignored. The frame of a painting is like the garments of a lady: they make up the appearance and hint of the status and importance of the one wearing it. Naked, we're nobodies.
I can understand "Lambs Tongue" as a cut in an ogee shape on the corner of wood....but on the neoclassical frames, they look like the classic "Bell flower"
While symbols in frames have changed over centuries, I a, curious about changes in varnish materials, varnish or stain colors, and whether there has been a time period where frames were integrated into the underlying artwork.
I will pay more attention to the frames next time I go to an art museum. I would give about anything to go back to the National Gallery and other museums of Europe. So many I have never and will never see.
What's the blob moulding called? It kind of looks like a string of golden pearls draped all round the frame one step in from the tongue and dart motifs 😮😅
Leave it to the - intelligent - English, to not only have a “Head of Frames” but to share this fascinating topic/knowledge with the public. Again, and still, my hat’s off to English life and culture.
'Head of Frames'! Nobody told me about that job in school careers sessions. How wonderful.😊

but are the leaves in the corner added later . its impossible to know the dimensions of the frame before the painting is done ?
At first, I thought he was talking about types of cracks on frames. 😂
Oh I always assumed that the lambs tongue thing was tulips
Did he also frame Roger Rabbit?
