@@emilyharpist Please don't lol. Do u tho lol. I'd say if you feel compelled to really go for it on the polyphony, try a multiband distortion along with some heavy compression, maybe even multiband compression too. You can get a really heavy sound with lighter distortion and lots of polyphony if you compress the sound right so that you can then just lightly clip the whole thing and still have that big constant barrage of sound. But the multiband distortion will allow you to dial it in even tighter so that every part is clipping just how you want. tTs is a process i usually do in a DAW, but i like to take a very dynamic resonant type of instrument like the harp, run it through one Multiband or standard distortion very lightly, lower the mix on that one to like 50 or less, its just there to give me some more natural variation of harmonics, then i compress those signals together to flatten it out, nearly a limiting type of compression, and then i mix in about 10-20%dry signal again, and then i distort it one more time through the Multiband, being careful to adjust each band so that its just subtly squishing and clipping.
Oh, alternately, theres some great SPECTRAL COMPRESSION plugins, idk if this is something that hardware has done much yet. But since those are workiung on the signal split into its individual partials, it can do much heavier compression and distortion without ever doing that super-clip mush sound.
Anyone whining about why you don't play your harp like an electric guitar seriously has no idea or context about how guitars and harps actually make sound. The fact that harps are literally open strings on every note makes for the beautiful ringing tone but also means they sustain until they naturally die off, any fingered note will have a far shorter decay than an open one, which is why distortion actually works on instruments like guitar. It's easy to forget that there are plenty of people who come to just hear what they think they'll hear and not want to learn about why their expectations are wrong. Lesson 2 in: "Different Instruments sound different" - a very hard course for some.

As a guitar player, it's already inherently interesting to learn about pedals, but the stuff you use them for is so wonderful, also because it's really unique! Keep doing what you do, much love!
Those big long bass strings on the harp are so wonderful for exciting interesting effects from all manner of pedals. Makes me want to create a multi-effect pedalboard for a baby grand with all sorts of midi control of the params and just go to town on it. Um, anybody got a wee baby grand lying around that they aren't using right now? I'll definitely bring it back more or less intact.
@@emilyharpist I'd leave the midrange and treble sections alone and just mess with the fat end to hear those big roundwound strings vibrating through a Nepenthes with clean piano tones over the top. Would be pretty cool I reckon, think of the children etc.
You TWO are brilliant composers, no shit reminds me of MJ and Quincy in the studio. One of yall has the idea, and the other stands back after patching em in. Loved the Metroid inspired tune on the YT short. Play hard! 🎛️🎮
You don't suck. You never will suck. And this is some of the coolest stuff I've ever heard. I'm truly fascinated. I never realized the pickup in the harp could respond to signals from pedals like that. And you used them to an amazing end. I think you're super cool.
The heavily distorted bass made me think of sci-fi videogame/movie scores and I'm not complaining. You could totally write one with these combinations you used in this video
(WHY WOULD ANYBODY SAY YOU SUCK >:() I really like it with the phaser. I bet Toccata and Fugue in D Minor would sound really really cool with that. Also I like how you just say you want to do things and they happen. Behind-the-scenes Russ so fast.
Yoooo....as an actual musician myself, all of what you are doing is RAD AS FUCK. I promise the haters have never even touched a harp and likely never heard one played live. As such...KEEP ROCKIN! This was SUPER fascinating. First video I've seen of yours and earned a sub right out!
I think (only think) that the reason why shredding with distortion on harp doesn't work well is because the strings continue resonating, while in guitar it's different because one string will be used for a couple of notes and maybe will be muted after that or something, and it doesn't create a big cluster of close distorted notes. But if you had a way to mute the strings on the harp after you pluck them it might work, but it doesn't sound to me like somthing that's easy to accomplish. I don't really know because I don't play harp.
I have always wanted to be able to play an instrument, I have taken lessons etc but I have not a musical bone in my body, I can't even sing in tune with others so when I see someone who can play I'm blown away slow or fast soft or loud being able to make music is a talent. Love the creativity of this, superb.
Try using distortion with compressor to lift up some hi tones. Im sure you can shred on a harp. You just need to build the right sound and techniques for it. A gate pedal will also help in the chain.
HAHAH thank you so much, Keri! 👏😂 and YES I feel the same way! I love their designs so much; 'simple and elegant' is exactly how I'd describe them! 🥰❤️

Makes me want to create a multi-effect pedalboard for a baby grand with all sorts of midi control of the params and just go to town on it.
Um, anybody got a wee baby grand lying around that they aren't using right now? I'll definitely bring it back more or less intact.
LMAOOO "more or less" 😂❤️
Ooh, I'd like to hear more of that song at 1:00.
I absolutely adored the original! That *was* exactly the sound I was looking for but I'm excited to listen to this too!
Not the cut of when the cork popped off 😭😭😭
Had me crying 😂
The heavily distorted bass made me think of sci-fi videogame/movie scores and I'm not complaining. You could totally write one with these combinations you used in this video
(WHY WOULD ANYBODY SAY YOU SUCK >:()
I really like it with the phaser. I bet Toccata and Fugue in D Minor would sound really really cool with that. Also I like how you just say you want to do things and they happen. Behind-the-scenes Russ so fast.
The helicopter coming in at 4:34 got a laugh out of me. Great stuff lol.
Great video!! Love all the sounds and combos! Great playing as always and more treats incoming.
Jesse got that FLWR POWR ✨
MVP🏆
That's the apocalyptic harp sound I've been looking for!
You're the G.O.A.T. Keep killing it!
No u
Love the sounds here!!
The first setup with the flower is very Blade Runner. - most excellent.
I have always wanted to be able to play an instrument, I have taken lessons etc but I have not a musical bone in my body, I can't even sing in tune with others so when I see someone who can play I'm blown away slow or fast soft or loud being able to make music is a talent. Love the creativity of this, superb.
She protecc,
She atacc,
But most importantly,
She give the pedal a smacc.
🏅👏👏😌 *nice*
Hey Emily Hopkins and Russ! Thanks for the futureharp music! Ride ride ride!
Eric!! thanks so much for always hanging out with us!!! 🥰❤️ ride ride ride!!!

❤️😂
Oooh that sounds amazing
thank you so much, Stuart! so glad you enjoy it! 🥰❤️
Amazing!!! I would pay to see you perform!!! Simply fantastic.
When she slaps a pedal you just KNOW it is good.
i am one of those people who loves that sound. in fact, do an entire freaked out noise video with those sounds.
Our heart full of distortion :-) Great line!
The harp playing is *obviously* amazing. I'm here to talk about those DRUMS THO!! Can you do a showcase on whoever this magical lefty is?
Haha yesss! His name is Joe Stavish and you can find him in the description of this video!
"Magical Lefty", man that's insanely kind of you.💖
Thank you.
I'm glad you're here.
🤘
@@lexhitreset seriously! That vibe and tone is killer. I come for the harp/pedals, I stay for the tea-towels on the drums.
Try using distortion with compressor to lift up some hi tones. Im sure you can shred on a harp. You just need to build the right sound and techniques for it. A gate pedal will also help in the chain.
Hey we were using a compressor and gate in this video but thanks for the suggestion
I love that sound!
HAHAHA I KNEW IT 😂❤️
I kind of like that sound, but it is your channel and you do you. Very cool, that song with the drums was really nice!
Be well stay awesome!
hahah I KNEW SOMEONE WAS GONNA LOVE THAT SOUND 😂❤️ thank you so much!! thanks for being here with us :)
Sounds bad? Rock it, Emily!
29 are lovely pedals, I like their design. Ascetically simple and elegant.
HAHAH thank you so much, Keri! 👏😂 and YES I feel the same way! I love their designs so much; 'simple and elegant' is exactly how I'd describe them! 🥰❤️
That's crazy! While listening to your song, I pictured myself playing Rygar (Nintendo) back when I was a kid! Lol. IT WORKED! You're a blast to watch! I truly love your personality! I don't even play harp! I found you on Rob's channel!
F the haters, this isn't the world cup of harpists. You make super beautiful and unique music.
You keep smacking that pedal! I'm not sure whats going on there but I like it. Great job, and great drumming on the demo track and the side-scroller track! Any updates on the game soundtrack? I'm asking for a friend...😏
Totally awesome🏴
thank you so much!! 🥰❤️
