Someone asked for the reference for this video but UA-cam deletes direct references and links. Use your creativity and formulate your answer to fool the algorithm! It's possible; I know from experience.

So many interesting ideas here... I haven't read The beginning of infinity in a few years so my memory might be a bit fuzzy but I believe that the thesis there was that science would bring unlimited production and resources. Now I am very curious of how this new book reflects on that thesis. I am also curious about the definition of rationality (I agree that a large portion of what is known by people cannot be expressed easily (in fact, i think that most things cannot be expressed) but that does not mean that such things are not rational...)... anyways, a lot of questions, so we will have to wait until we can read the book!

I always assumed it was about the ability to match means to ends, and that was about it. Maybe also to assess the viability of achieving a given end with available means, or even to assess the real value/utility of a chosen end to oneself, but both are really secondary to the primary means/ends relationship.

When he says you can’t base political decisions on ’the Science’ what does he mean?

Science gives us insight and data into what is true about the objective universe. But what is true about the objective universe isn't by itself enough to make a political decision. Political decisions have to be made in additional constraints like morality, economics, expediency etc. For example, science may tell us covid vaccines help mitigate the effects of Covid but forcing everyone to get a covid shot (even if it is scientifically proven to help them fight Covid when they get it naturally) infringes on that individual's right to opt out of the medicine.

How is that anti-enlightenment? Deutsch is critiquing the way reactionary forces characterise "woke" and yes probably how people who jump on bandwagons end up behaving.
Btw he did the same mistake re. Brexit, believing people mean what they say, not seeing the hustle
It is frustrating because his educational ideas "taking children seriously" are brilliant… and not in this spirit at all

It is anti-Enlightenment because there are two different Enlightenments. The Continental Enlightenment only specified that all problems can be solved. The British Enlightenment also specifies that problems are inevitable. The former is pessimistic and the latter is optimistic. Maybe Deutsch thinks that taking adults seriously is also virtuous? One justifies authority and the other celebrates freedom.

Seems like he has a similar epistemology to Michael Polanyi.

Yes, a human can do amazing things, human brains are particularly agile and innovative in solving problems. A mentor is the one who dissolve myths one after another, and free our potential ability in solving hard problems. David Deutsch is my mentor. @DavidDeutschPhysicist
