    Hello doc, great to see you literally run towards your dream! :'D
    Just a quick question .. Can OET be a substitute for TOEFL?

    • @Khalemedic
      @Khalemedic  2 роки тому

      Thank you! If your question relates to electives, I would recommend you email the program coordinator to ask. Different places have different policies. Sometimes, you can even substitute the test for a letter of English study.

    Are my grades in medicine school important for matching?

    • @Khalemedic
      @Khalemedic  9 місяців тому

      Transcripts remain a difficult part for programs to use in order to judge part of an applicant’s application. There’s no standard and IMGs may suffer the most in this regard if they come from lesser known medical schools (if known at all). There are no statistics about the importance of the transcript so no one can say for sure how much they affect your score. However, I do think if you have a few questionable scores in some of your grades, I would make a conscious effort to prepare for any questions about it to demonstrate your strengths and opportunities of growth.
      I hope this answers your question!

    I have my mind set on applying for IM residency then a cardiology fellowship afterwards. Right now I am organizing at least 1 elective rotation, Would you recommend it to be in cardiology or in internal medicine? or both?

    • @Khalemedic
      @Khalemedic  2 роки тому +2

      If you could get both, that always helps. For cardiology fellowship, there’s lots of other things they focus on as opposed to an elective you did during the end of your medical school. I don’t believe you could go wrong with either choice so long as you’re able to get a great experience from the elective as well as some letters of recommendation.

    • @Khalemedic
      @Khalemedic  2 роки тому +5

      You are a student. You are there to learn. Of course, there are things you could do to prepare for the rotation like reading and understanding the management of the cases you're likely to see on the rotation.
      I recommend you don't spend time thinking about being dismissed and rather approaching the rotation with an open mind and eager desire to learn.

    Hey, have a quick question. I've been reading in a couple of places about the Dress policy of Mayo Clinic. I will be rotating at Thoracic Oncology, Rochester and wanted to know if there's any rules regarding wearing scrubs/ colors or is it mandatory to wear Formals only. Thank you!

    • @Khalemedic

    What about doing electives in specialtiy outside the specialtiy you are applying to, i was able to secure 2 months of electives in an excellent uni program; one of them in specialtiy i am applying to after graduation and another in a different specialty. What do you recommend? Should i do 1 month in specialtiy i am applying to or 2 months; one of them outside the specialtiy am applying to.

    • @Khalemedic
      @Khalemedic  Рік тому

      In my opinion, I think it's better than not doing anything during that month if you have the financial capability. My reasoning is mainly around the idea that although it may not be in the specialty you're interested in applying to, you are still attaining US clinical experience. For an IMG, this is still beneficial.
      Bear in mind that this is my opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt.

      The link to VSAS is in the description. That’s what I used to apply to different electives. Your medical school needs to purchase a subscription to allow students to use it.

    If I want to do elective in 2024 . When should I have to start the whole process of applying for elective?

    • @Khalemedic
      @Khalemedic  2 роки тому +1

      Typically for international medical students, try to plan ahead by at least 3-6 months for your elective. This is not a strict rule and may vary from program to program.

      It's certainly possibly according to the latest NRMP match data for IMGs. However, it vastly varies based on the targeted specialty. Take a look through the document and check out the specialty you're interested in to get a better idea.

    • @Khalemedic
      @Khalemedic  2 роки тому

      Search on google “HIPAA and OSHA Courses” and you should find some courses giving out certificates provided you pay a fee and take an exam.
      For medical malpractice insurance, just search “medical malpractice insurance for medical students” and you should find a lot of different prices available.

    • @Khalemedic

      Graduate medical students can only do externiships such as observerships. Medical students who have not yet graduated can do sub-internships and electives. A sub internship is typically 4 weeks long but may vary from program to program.
