7.35 Carcano Catching the Bullet and Penetration Test, WW2 Surplus vs Commercial Ammo

- Is the Carcano a good rifle? What are the ballistics capability for this despised WW2 rifle? How different is the 7.35 round in comparison to the 6.5 round? Yep, in this video, we are conducting some scientific not so scientific tests!
We take this historic WW2 era Carcano M38 short rifle and use it on some wood blocks at the range. This Carcano is in 7.35x51mm and was used mainly by the Italians and the Finnish during World War Two. Many of these were also left behind in Ethiopia. Historically, these rifles in 7.35 don’t get a lot of notoriety.
When WW2 ended, these Carcanos didn’t get a lot of use. Many got sold off to collector markets and sent to countries for light duty or police units. Though the history of the Carcano isn’t appreciated as much as many other military surplus rifles, the Carcano in 7.35 is actually a really decent rifle. I’ve personally tested a Carcano M38 Short Rifle in 7.35 at 600 yards (using Steinel ammo) and was quite surprised at the results.

Had a fellow tell me he bought one of these in the late 50s along with a pile of surplus ammo. He said his buddies teased him about his old rifle. His revenge was being able to plink with his cheap ammo when the other kids were broke and couldn't afford . 30-30 shells or whatever they had. He said that rifle was a real fun one, and a perfect investment.
Very cool story…. sadly, it’s not like that these days
It's heartening to see these old rifles tested and put to use. Thanks again!
It wouldn’t be a Carcano video without a last round malfunction!
Lol 😂 yea it doesn’t do that with my surplus clips… jus those ones that appear aftermarket.
I love your videos and your content as always. Your voice has improved as well. You sound more natural and less cocky than you did 2 years ago. Keep doing these cool and informative vids. Your channel will continue to grow.
I appreciate that! I watched a few of my older vids recently… I have changed a lot lol
I have an m38 Carcano in 7.35. I shoot original WWII Italian 7.35 ammo made in 1939, got about 600 rounds of it when I bought the rifle, in boxes on en bloc clips. Fantastic handy little rifle. The Italians were kind of ahead of the game thinking short, handy, lower recoiling rifles. Shame almost no one produces new 7.35 and the steinel is dodgy in quality from what I hear.
Good information. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
The Kennedys have harsh feelings towards them Carcano rifles
The 7.35s are comfy guns to shoot
Yes I definitely enjoy shooting them when I have ammo
Can you try using that ww2 surplus ammo in ballistic gelatin some time?
I’ll see if we can try it, will have to see what it does compared to modern cartridges
Great stuff just got one from auction SA for under $200
Nice! Now to find ammo lol. I usually go with Steinel or PCI
sgammo
Just got one for $200 from Royal Tiger Imports.
Can't wait to see it.
Please help where to find ammo for it, im looking for ammo,
Try Steinel Ammo, Bannermans, and maybe Milsurp Munitions. You could always use Ammoseek to find some out there as well
Is that the TS 17.7" barrel or the 21.5"?
20.9 in
Anybody know how often steinel comes in stock?
It’s best to get email notifications when ammo is back in stock. It also depends on ammo type and if materials are available
Recoil couldn't be very rough. Velocity in the 2400s is . 30-30 class .
Right, the Carcano M38 has way less recoil compared to a Mosin
Yeah. 7.35 Carcano is a ballistic twin of .30 Remington and 30-30.
Revisiting this again. I recall actually having fired an old Terni carbine about 25 or more years ago. Don't recall anything about the recoil profile being special in any way. If something is hard kicking you tend to remember it. On the flip side, if something is incredibly mild you remember that too. Just not as vividly as having been beat up.
Still not buying one. I have a LOT of WW2 milsurps and don’t need another orphan caliber.
Yea hard to find that ammo
Every carcano needs love😂
It’s pretty easy to reload for though, and a lot of fun- the toughest part is sizing the bullets; Lee makes a .298 sizing die
