    Clay, this is the best video of the golf swing ive ever seen. I used to hit with all arms like many amateurs do but realized i needed to get my body into it after watching a "scrawny guy" out drive me by 40yrds consistently. I am at a point where im firing the hips based on the knowledge that it is necessary for longer better shots.
    This particular video will help to time my waist, shoulders and arms much better.
    As always, great video. You have helped me improve my game as well as my wife's game as she is new to the game.

    This is an excellent piece of instruction, I think I thrust my hips to hard creating a faster and uncontrolled swing, I want to slow down my swing and concentrate on technique and timing, I think this could be the solution for me..Looking at you pros swing, you make it seem so effortless and graceful and you get sooo much more distance from the swing..

    Clay...thx for the video. For us guys that are a little heavier in the mid-section right now, but have very strong hands/arms, would it make sense to initiate the downswing a bit more with the arms/uncocking wrists and let the hips/legs follow? Thx again. Go Big Blue!

      @TopSpeedGolf  5 років тому

      HI Travis, no, you still want to initiation from the ground up. If you have more force to exert then it will be a little tougher. If you swing from the top then you're going to most likely cast and flip. If you're a strong guy and have some swing speed, you'll hit it a mile in the air with tons of spin. That's tough to control. how many degrees open should the hips and shoulders be halfway into the downswing and then at impact?

  • @lukedanielborel3628
    @lukedanielborel3628 7 років тому +1

    Very nice swing. I would say that he has a better swing than the majority of the PGA Teachers that I see play once a year in the PGA Teacher's Championship. His swing is way better than the stall and early release from a stuck position. He is not stuck at all, very nice. I would add that the PGA Pros that play on the tour have a slightly narrower stance, their left lead knee points towards the target a little more, they uncoil more towards the lead left foot, so that they transfer more weight towards their front left foot before their upper body uncoils, also they pivot more on their left lead heel and they push off an pivot and spin or rotate more on the right trial balls of their feet near the toes of the right trail foot, and when they finish their swing their weight on more concentrated on their left lead heel with their left lead toes a tiny bit off of the ground and at their finish they have more of their weight on their left lead foot and right trail toes , mostly due to mostly the difference being their slightly narrower stance compared to Clays slightly wider stance . However Clays swing is probably easier on the body than most PGA players on the Tour and looks like he generates good club head speed and he has an excellent concept of everything lining up at 45 degrees with the upper lower body and the club shaft, a very nice position demonstrating efficient repeatable swing with good clubhead speed. To me it looks almost like PGA Pro Tour players tilt towards the target as a first move on the downswing and that forces them to bend their lead left knee fanned out about 35 degrees and also gets almost all of their weight onto their left foot, however they don't really have a reverse pivot, because they never fire and fall back, because they pivot their weight on their left lead heel and push off hard with their right trail foot and then rotate their right side of their body during club release as the body pivot on the right trial toes which transfers momentum with the right hand and right side of their body, so that their weight is alway moving forward starting with the tilt of the spine towards the target in the first stage of the downswing and at the same time the left lead knee bents more at about 35 degrees pivoted left of the ball and then their hips are uncoiling at the same time and then once their weight more towards the left lead foot their spine gets vertical and then slightly tilted away from the target after that when the grip and hands more up and left curving around to left of the target and then the right side of the body adds momentum to the final weight shift towards the target and all the while the clubhead starts into the impact zone from a slightly inside to outside path, and finally as the grip and hands curve up and left the clubhead releases straight down the target line, and in addition they don't release as theyfall away from the target when they release the shoulder arms and hands due to the great release of the right side of their body accomplished by pivoting and pushing off and the bent and then straighten action of the left lead knee as the spine goes from being tilted towards the target about 15 degrees to going to the spine being tilted away from the target about 5 degrees at impact..
    Other than all that that I wrote, this video is excellent. When I teach beginners I first teach them how to swing with minimum coil such that I teach them to power their swing with the shouders and the arms and with shaft lag and shaft lean, and teach them initially to minimise turning the hips and the torso on the backswing and minimise body coil on the backswing, mainly just teaching swing planes and shoulder coil and the backswing, but with an emphases on minimising tension in the body during the swing. After that I would probably teach Clays swing, and the after that I would go to a slightly more complicated swing of the average PGA Tour players, which is slightly more difficult to pull off without damaging the knees hips and lower back. Basically Clays swing that he is teaching in this video generates good club head speed and won't injure the body and what I would call a single digit handicap swing.

    • @lukedanielborel3628
      @lukedanielborel3628 7 років тому +1

      I might need to add something here and that is when I practice a swing with a wide than normal stance and then have a large coil in my backswing that I injure the middle of my back just below my heart.
      With a narrower stance like you see on the PGA Tour Players you are not as likely to experience injuries in the middle back spine section. They the PGA Tour players use a narrower stance and rely on spine ankle and footwood and club paths to achieve power and accuracy, and get good clubhead speed usually without any mid to upper spine injures, and usually without any neck problems.

    It's all important, and we should all be working on the thing that is hurting our sequence the most, but the arms are the primary creator of speed in the golf swing. I'm including the wrists and hands in the arms here. New players who only swing their arms intuitively get this, but as they learn what the body needs to be doing, most forget that the arms are the most important part to having a functional golf swing. Yes, you can be Jim Furyk or David Duvall and be a champion, but that is so difficult to learn, particularly if you're just a weekend warrior who learned the game later in life.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  5 років тому +1

      Hi, I 100% agree that most of the speed comes from the arms. The body provides the momentum to create more speed and also puts you in the position to hit the ball solid with compression. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    If one has fast hip and body turn but the arms are weak and slow, the latter would become a drag. The pros have got big muscled arms that pull and push so swift and strong and in sync with the pushing hip and body turn. Thus, the arms and the body must be synchronized fast in wacking the ball, and that is one of the important objectives in practicing.

  • @williamreichert4798

    The purpose of the body in the backswing is to permit the backswing to be as long as possible to allow the club. head to have more time to accelerate and increase the speed. In the downswing. the purpose of the body is to get the body out of the way so the clubhead is not
    inhibited by a restricted body rotation, Without good rotation during the downswing.the club head will have to slow down or you will hurt your back.
    Perfect the end backswing position and the end follow through position before you try to master the sequencing of the downswing. Not doing that. is like steering a car before you start the engine

    When you throw a baseball in from the outfield at top speed, which is more important, the throwing arm or the rest of the body?
    It's really not a sensible question. The fact that your torso and hips and legs move will _not_ make your arm and the ball move. But it's also true that if all you move is the arm and the ball, your throw isn't going very far. A lot of this has to do with disintegrating what is really a single complicated move by the body into a series of elements The very act of defining these ("hands" as opposed to "arms," "arms" as opposed to "body," etc.) is useful for some purposes and yet disastrously complicating and misleading in other ways.
    Aside from that, the advice here is good, particularly the idea of getting to approximately 45 degrees past impact as the point of full release. It's amazing how few people understand this -- that the club is releasing, not released, at the point of impact. The simple act of changing your mindset to get oriented to swinging through the ball, rather than to it, may be old-school, but it's game-changing for a lot of people.
    The concept of staged acceleration and how the conservation of angular momentum (the slowing down of elements in the kinetic chain as force is slung outward) is also on the money here, with one caveat (not directly advocated in the video, but could be heard this way by people who don't understand the difference): Anybody who tries to drag the arms with the shoulders on the downswing is going to have a lot of trouble hitting the ball solidly from the right inside path. This has been confirmed not only by a majority of the best teachers in the world going back a hundred years or more, but also by various biomechanical studies. Shoulders are better thought of as enabling the right path and plane for free-swinging arms, with power flowing through them rather than from them. Shoulder-dominated swings are inevitably bad swings, and for the average player who hasn't learned a free-swinging motion and a high-speed release, the effort to "rotate more" with the shoulders and torso is absolutely devastating.
    There's a really good section on this idea of staged acceleration in Cochran and Stobbs' The Search for the Perfect Swing. Nothing has really improved on it in the past four and a half decades, at least in the broad outlines.

    • @pbabs3389
      @pbabs3389 4 роки тому

      stephen f 100% agree, when I was ‘lost’ I tried moving to a shoulder dominated swing and completely forgot that you actually have to swing your arms (like an actual athletic motion) to hit the ball...

  • @slmmcgee8686
    @slmmcgee8686 7 років тому +12

    While none of this is technically inaccurate in terms of the acceleration and deceleration of various body parts, the fact is that at impact, the arm-club unit creates about 85% of the speed of the swing, with the body accounting for about another 15% if used correctly.
    Clay is accurately describing what happens in the sequence, but we have to remember that in a 'technically sound' swing, these various parts of the body accelerating and decelerating happen practically simultaneously. One of the best points Clay makes is that you don't need to consciously try to fire your body fast or first. The key is to fire your arms fast from the top - this isn't to be confused with casting or flipping or 'holding the lag.' Casting and flipping actually occur more often as a result of improper use/acceleration of the body, as a reaction to being able to deliver the clubhead to the ball instead of slamming it into the ground or slapping at it weakly with your body. In other words, if you slide laterally in the downswing or you over-rotate in your backswing/backswing is too long, the only way to get the club back to the ball with a semi-decent strike is to cast and/or flip.
    Tony Luczak has accomplished some excellent scientific analysis of the neuromotor mechanics of the golf swing and does a wonderful job describing where and how power and speed are generated, and what to 'feel' in order to do it. Essentially it's a sidearm/underhand throwing motion from the top of the backswing. It is driven by the trail arm. The body will respond as it needs to in order to support this motion. Tony coaches Jeff Flagg, who won the long drive championship 2 years ago using precisely the mechanics of throwing the arms and club from the top of the backswing through impact.
    Mike Malaska also does a great job explaining how the arms are the key from the top of the backswing.
    Incidentally, lag isn't something you actively create in a golf swing by trying to hold your wrist to club shaft angle or pull the handle of the club, it happens naturally as a result of a good, fast swing. While there is some forward shaft lean with every club in the bag at impact, even the longest hitters in the world have released all their 'lag' by the time they strike the ball. I would imagine that Clay isn't thinking about moving his hips or shoulders or core from the top of the backswing in the swings in this video, I'd guess he's thinking about whipping the club through impact with his arms.

      If it's between Malaska, John Jacobs, and you, along with a variety of biomechanical studies, I'm pretty sure we'll be going with Malaska, Jacobs, and research. I could add a variety of others as well -- Dunn, Morrison, King, Toski, Flick, and quite a few more -- if this were only an argument from authority, which it doesn't really need to be. But as long as you're going to talk about Mike Malaska either "intentionally teaching bad technique" or being far more ignorant than you are, to the point of being "funny" in his analysis of DJ, you shouldn't expect that to go unanswered.
      Neither Malaska nor any of the Jacobs-King-Toski-Flick et al. "arms swinging" teachers say the shoulders don't need to move well to support the swinging motion. In fact, they all say the opposite. It's not that the shoulders add _no_ force; it's that they so easily overpower the arms at the outset of the downswing that they have to be trained to stay under control. In every great swing in history, the arms and hands outpace the shoulders right from the start of the downswing, a clear indication that it's more a matter of power flowing _through_ the shoulders the the arms being powered _by_ the shoulders. If they were being powered by the shoulders, you'd see the distance between the hands and right (trailing) shoulder stay the same or diminish. But that doesn't happen, and it's good that it doesn't, since the rotational nature of shoulder movement would drive the downswing path and plane sharply outside and steep, as it does in the swings of the vast majority of high-handicappers.

    You stayed behind the ball nicely, however I expected to see more prominently the lower body start the downswing, followed by the upper body. Don't get me wrong, your lower body did appear to start the downswing but not as much as I thought it would. Maybe it would be more evident with a longer club. I like to watch Hogan's lower body start down first, now there is a good example...Hogan! Funny, too, how instructors keep Ben Hogan's fundamentals safe decade after decade, taking what Hogan taught years ago about the lower body leading the swing and re-teaching it year after year. Thank goodness Ben Hogan talked about it first, most instructors would have nothing to teach otherwise.

      im no expert, but i swing with a "body release" swing and imo this isn't body release. He's using his body to a certain extent but still releasing with his wrists. It's a hard way to swing unless you have the mobility to do it. So im sure its also difficult for him to show it if he's been using a wrist/arm release his entire career.

    I don't think we need to rotate hips before downswing. we should rotate upper body vertically first and shouldn't rotate hips consciously. If we rotate hips consciously, it will generate slice ball so often.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 років тому

      Hi, thanks for sharing. Yes, over rotation of the hips can cause a slice. A slice is typically caused by a swing path that is too far to the left and a club face that is open to that path (assuming your'e right handed). Not having good separation of the hips and the shoulders can cause this because the shoulders can get too open. If you're hips aren't open at impact then it is going to be near impossible to get forward shaft lean because you won't be able to release the club out in front. This is why it is important to have the hips open at impact and the shoulders square or just slightly open. Here is a great drill for this from the site if you want to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/topic/how-to-compress-a-golf-ball-hip-shoulder-alignment/. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

      Thanks for your response. I'm really glad to see it.
      But I didn't tell you about "over rotation".
      We really have to rotate our hips "consciously" or I mean, we "dare" to rotate our hips before downswing? I''m so sorry... for my poor English. I'm from Japan. In my case, I don't dare to rotate my hips before downswing, but when I rotate my upper body vertically to the ground, my hips rotate spontaneously and as you mentioned , my hips are open 45 degree to the left at impact and I can get forward shaft lean ...
      For example, my 5 iron distance at tee shot is about 210 yards.
      I think we should pay attention to " how to rotate our upper body" much better than hip rotation.
      I really would like to watch your movie on how to rotate upper body.
      And thanks a lot for your video you introduced me before. That was very instructive.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 років тому

      Hi, thanks for the response. I would say that your situation is pretty rare. Most people who think to swing the way that you do will end up casting the club and flipping through impact. This is very common. Most people really won't rotate their hips at all until the momentum of the arms after impact pulls them into a full finish position. Their hips will usually be square like they were at address. It's near impossible to release the club properly and get forward shaft lean this way. It sounds like you're on the right track though. Keep up the hard work. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

      Mr.Clay, thanks for the response again.
      "Most people who think to swing the way that you do will end up casting the club and flipping through impact. This is very common. " Absolutely right. In Japan, too. I know it.But what I told you is not about that. How to move upper body is the key. If we move our upper body wrong, it will end up various miss shots. Flipping through is one of them, I think.
      Let me introduce you some great videos which are getting more and more popular in Japan today.
      ua-cam.com/video/AN2isMUFo0M/v-deo.html

      Hi Adri, thanks for the comment. I think you would be really surprised at what you can do with practice, repetition and training the right way. This is what we preach in the Top Speed Golf System. Check it out here: topspeedgolf.com/get-access-to-all-golf-courses/. I hope you are playing well. ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

    You are putting a lot of things into less than a blink of an eye in time. The swing is finished at address. If you have not moved right, those syncing thoughts, will be a sinking thoughts.....disaster. Your swing is finished at first impulse and your first impulse is absolutely thoughtlessly in the zone, in that hyper explosive tract. You are fortunate.

      It's not too difficult if you see it as a way to understand how clubhead speed builts during a swing. But you can never think about it during a swing.
      Try ,while walking, to analize how taking a step works in detail, and you will fall over! XD
