    Jackie Cooper is basically the adult of the relationship throughout the film until this scene. He's basically letting all of the "kid temper tantrum" out after his father's death. In the remake, he's not his father's caretaker in the same way, which changes the story significantly.

    Jackie Cooper, I think, did the very best he could with less than stellar dialogue, blocking, and performances from the other people here. His character also spends most of the movie acting as the "adult" figure taking care of his own father, that it makes perfect sense he should break down like a child when he loses him. It's a very good performance in a mostly misguided scene.

    • @obscurelyvague
      @obscurelyvague 6 років тому +5

      There might be different criteria today than there was deadens ago as to what makes good or bad dialogue. Surely it is subjective and may have a lot to do with people of today not having the same perspectives or tastes as previous generations. Or it could be said to be a matter of having lower standards of what makes a good movie and what makes good acting. The original "The Champ" is considered a classic which is a very automatic thing because it was made during what is considered to be Hollywood's golden age and early heyday. The remake of the 1970s actually was considered to be something that was done because at the time certain well known movies of the previous three decades were being re-made and put into a more modern context.

    I think all three versions were great and products of their time. Jackie Cooper did great acting for a child in the 1931 version, in the 1953 remake starring Red Skeleton and Tim Considine as "Dink", that ending was heartbreaking too, but the 1979 version with The Champ dying and Rick Schroeder walking to Faye Dunaway and just embracing her while crying and not saying a word was powerful. All three versions were great in my humble opinion.

    I don't get why people are saying this one is better or the '79 version was better. They're both great! Just different. Acting standards have changed dramatically. Ricky Shroeders "Performance" seemed just that...but Cooper's acting came off the way a real life circumstance would...a child his age would not thoroughly connect with death.. especially sudden death...their reaction would be "un-thought out" and "sporadic" just like this...While heartfelt, Rick Schroeders version was a played out Hallmark performance making for great cinema. Here we get what real life tends to produce...not always clear..but nonetheless Transparent.
