so im kinda worried ran into a discussion about sphagnum peat moss being bad for the tegus do to ph lvls you clearly do it but is there anything that should be looked at before adding a brand?
The problem with this substrate is that it greatly exceeds the load bearing capacity of most homes (especially once saturated with water). One cubic foot weighs 68lbs dry, while most residential buildings have a weight limit of 30-50lbs per square foot.
Water weighs aprox 63# per cubic foot. What you're suggesting is that virtually no home can have a fish tank, and this is verifiably untrue. There is absolutely zero concern for the weight of this substrate on 90% of applications.
Hey there I am building the wood sliding top enclosure you made a video about. I was wandering if you use this substrate in those and if so how much would you recommend?
thats a good set up i like it my question is do you change this time from time or is this part of a bio set up, if so an you do change it then how often do you change it please , an do you spot clean everyday ,anyone have time to answer this thanks
Very late but a bioactive enclosure will clean everything up for you. Of course with a large lizard such as a Tegu, you may have to pick up some feces are and there. You don’t need to change the substrate, and springtail isopods with plants sturdy enough for a tegu will make a great bioactive enclosure
Thank you for this video. I have a question is it safe for the tegu if ingested ? Also how well is this mixture for potential mites development ? How often do you just mist to keep humidity? This is for indoor enclosure not outdoor ?
This will work for indoor or outdoor enclosures. Humidity will just depend on your area. I'm in Texas and it's very humid here so enclosures don't need misted very often. I don't worry about mites at all. I have never had an impaction problem and I have kept babies all the way through adults on this substrate.
Rose City Reptiles TX the reason why I ask is because I live in nj and I have him indoor where can I find these products are they on amazon ? If so can you place the links of purchase that would be great thank you
Just cant thank you enough for this particular video on diy substrate for tegus. I've been buying cypress mulch for $43.00 dollars a large bag at a reptile store. It's hardly affordable making it hard to have 4 pair. I want to buy my next argentine black and white tegus from you. I'm not a good computer user so I dont know how to use face book but you had mentioned in another video you were going to have a website made that I could order from. Put me down for 2. Hey do you know an equivalent brand to the timberline too soil thats sold in Ontario or even Canada im having a hell of a time finding something organic with no adatives or fertilizers.
Got a question for you. When I get my tegu tbey will be in a 30 Gallon enclosure until i have finished their main. I dont plan on the tegu being in the 30 for more than 3 months. Now if i mix a batch of the substrate how long does it last before I need to make a new batch?
Glad to see someone finally doing a video on this.
Thank you! Was definetly needed!
I’m using this right now and my baby red tegu loves it. Thank you.
Exactly what I use for my tegus enclosure! Mines bioactive as well so it works really well for that also! Great video man!
Awesome! Glad to hear the clean up crew likes this as well!
How do you make bioactive substrate for your tegu?
@@RoseCityReptilesTX could you also use this for other reptiles like boa constrictor?
I have been searching for this info all day...
is all organic topsoil ok or does it need to be a specific brand?

i couldn't find any of that peat moss can i use a different brand of peat moss

What is the ideal depth of Sub for the baby tegus?

Great video thank you for sharing ♥️
Your welcome and thank you!
@@RoseCityReptilesTX your so welcome did you name that girl yet
If you wanted to use this for snakes would it be smart to bake it? To eliminate microorganisms or smaller bugs?
Thanks for sharing i do have a question ... with regular cleaning how long would the substrate last in the enclosure
Depends. If you spot clean it can last several months. Add a clean up crew and it could last forever.
How often do you clean the enclosure
Do you have to add water to it ? And if yes how much water?
Is this for Tegus only? Would this me good for Ball Pythons?
