Generative Ambience with the Dirtywave M8 and Prismatic Spray (Bite-Size Beats 03)

- Playing with the v3.X firmware.
Using the new RNL (Random Left) command on an Internal MIDI instrument to send random pitches in a fixed key to the new Hypersynth and External instruments.
For the External Instrument, I'm using the Prismatic Spray by Arman Bohn and modulating several of the parameters with 4 LFOs set to 'random'.
There is a single arpeggiated sample that plays toward the end of the loop and a percussive track courtesy of several 909 style samples that also makes heavy use of the CHA (Chance) and RNL commands along with some hard panning to further enhance the aural chaos.

Really cool! Has a nice futuristic, dystopian vibe to it.
I immediately thought that maybe you were doing a cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’, but am overjoyed with what you came up with- The rhythm (and space around it) is just so beautiful!
Love this. I am new the m8 and I love ambient music so I've been looking at ways to do it. This def gives me a lot of ideas. Just to make sure I understand the set up correctly, the midi out of m8 goes to the Prismatic Spray and the audio comes back to the m8 through the audio in, correct? How does Hypersynth fit in to this setup? Do you think this kind of a setup where an external pedal/instrument like the Prismatic Spray or Macrocosm Hologram is the best way to create ambient music or can it be done internally in the m8 as well?
Thank you!
You're correct about the routing. I have instrument 4 setup as a MIDI Out instrument on Channel 2 but routed to the Internal Port 03.
In the actual Phrase, I'm playing a random note on Instrument 4, but in midi settings I have MIDI Channel 2 being routed to Instruments 01 and 05. Instrument 01 is the Hypersynth, instrument 05 is the 'external instrument' that is sending MIDI to the Prismatic Spray and receiving the audio on the Stereo Line-Input.
This setup allows the same randomly generated note from MIDI instrument 4 to keep the Hypersynth and Prismatic Spray 'in tune' with one another.
The M8 is great at ambient by itself. The best way is def the way that's most accessible and inspiring for you. Wiring up something as complicated as this is totally unnecessary, but it scratches a particular itch for me and it was a fun way to explore some of these new features when they were initially released.
@@monsterlogostudios Thanks a ton for sharing. I think this setup is creative and the work is beautiful. Your channel has taught me a lot about the M8. Thanks and keep them coming. Cheers
