Secularism is not neutrality, it is the imposition of nihilism, which always favours the strong over the weak. There is no such thing as neutrality, it is just a case of which beliefs you will privilege. Catholicism is the only totally rational, just, belief system there is. Nihilism (atheisim, secularism) makes human rights arbitrary. It makes selfish desire the ultimate deciding factor (abortion) and so, society necessarily takes a nose dive as has been seen in every attempt to create a Godless society.

There is an incredibly powerful push at the moment to drive Christianity completely out of every part of Irish society, and all in the name of "tolerance" of course. Over the lifetime of this ruthless Fine Gael govt we have not only seen an assault on marriage, but also on parental rights, on the right to attend a school with a faith based ethos in accordance with ones religious beliefs, and of course the all out attack on the 8th amendment. If the referendum leads to its removal, exclusive competence in this matter will be transferred to the Dail which will allow future legislators to effectively bypass the population and introduce as liberal an abortion regime as they see fit, in spite of all the talk of letting people have their say. The Oireachtas Committee on the 8th was also a complete set up, with members of a pro life persuasion being completely outnumbered from the start, the vast majority of representations to the committee being made by pro abortionists, and to add insult to injury, a vote being taken roughly HALFWAY through the representations to recommend repeal. The independent chair of the committee - who would have a casting vote in case of a tied result - was also clearly disposed to a certain viewpoint. And that is before you even talk about the money illegally funneled from Soros' Open Society Foundation in groups calling for repeal. The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

I agree, but I think that the internet has become something of a game changer. People now have access to information and communication with each other which is undermining the power of the "liberal elites". So although I still think there's some momentum left in the old guard liberals, I think their days are numbered as the average person is wising up to their nihilistic nonsense.

During the cold war, the USSR was perceived as a very humorless place. Russia`s past could be Europe`s future. This new "morality" is the same as the old USSR morality, we just have not made the connection yet. A major economic depression will shift the paradigm I suspect and that economic depression is inevitable. The consequences of monetary expansion cannot be avoided forever.

'Who tells the narratives' that comment from a member of the audience pretty much identifies the critical problem in Ireland, where fearless exchange of ideas is dead. This fascinating discussion happened in a podcast format, in a UK venue. It cannot even be imagined in any Irish university or media outlet without some punch and judy show breaking out. Waters and Nagle have a depth and intellectual heft that is almost completely absent in Ireland now. Depressing.

  • @seancoleman5021

I have only listened to the first half an hour so far and these comments refer to that only. First, it is great to hear from John Waters again after he was hounded from his job in the Irish Times. He seems to have picked up a slight northern Irish twang. His point that the way things appear to be going at the moment is inevitable is an unproven assumption is typical of his insights. My position is conservative Catholic. Ireland is becoming more intolerant almost by the week.
Like JW I agree with some of the points made by Angela Nagle without drawing her conclusion, eg her reference to the EU, that the homosexual marriage referendum was backed by all the political parties and unions, and that public discourse is cursed by an intolerant populism. I don't agree with much that Jon O'Brien said. There was censorship in Britain too (and a good thing too) and Christian morality was the accepted morality for everyone. There is an excellent chapter (or two) in Peter Hitchens's The Abolition of Britain. He talks about pluralism and tolerance of minorities, but Ireland was very much a Catholic country. I also take issue with his reference to the 'hierarchy', which is closer to Dan Brown than to any reality I have ever experienced.
Clíodhna Ní Ghadhra said (I think) that the way these things are discussed prevents discussion of other important issues like direct provision for refugees or immigrants. She might have noticed that there is no debate about immigration at all, because most people oppose it. There was an article about immigration (by Eilis O'Hanlon) in the Sunday Independent a few months ago and it was favourable to it and welcomed Ireland's 'positive' attitude towards immigrants. She said that more than one in ten people living here were not born here. I wrote to the paper saying that this was not untrue, but that it would have been more accurate to say that more than one in six (OECD figures 17.6%, recent immigration (last 5 yrs) at nearly three times the average OECD rate, plus illegal immigrants - that would indicate that one in four is not that far off). I said that it would also not have been untrue to state the the rate was more than one in a hundred. This is just an example of how these things are dealt with (or rather ignored) in the media.
Finally at about 29mins a young man referred to paedophile priests. The anti-clerical hysteria which has raged, in waves, in Ireland for the last two or three decades cannot be understood outside the context of modern witch hunts and mass delusions. What we learn from these is that deceit and dishonesty dominate while those in authority not only get swept along but make matters far worse. What is happening is that Irish history since 1921 is being re-written with the implication that the millions of ordinary people did not know the true nature of the country they knew and loved, or worse, that they were complicit in 'genocide' or whatever. I believe that this is completely untrue. I would recommend Rory Connor's excellent Irish Salem website for detailed information. The late Richard Webster's Sceptical Essays website is essential for, perhaps, a wider context. I would also recommend 'Moor Larkin's' Jim'll Never Fix This site about the astonishing outbreak of fantasy and hysteria which is the Jimmy Savile legend.

    • @seancoleman5021
      @seancoleman5021 7 років тому +2

      Now for the second half.
Angela Nagle: "The way the public debate is conducted here [Britain] is always very impressive to me." British institutions are indeed stronger. The phrase "let's have an adult debate" used here in Ireland is a joke. It simply means 'now public opinion is ready for the next step in what we want to do.' There is no debate about anything of any importance. Policy is decided by media acclaim. Desmond Fennell put it down to provincialism. But things are changing in Britain too, and very quickly, as Hitchens testifies. Our media elite simply follows the line set in NY and London, forcing their ideas on the people. It is a sign of the utter uselessness of these ideas that despite decades of propaganda there is still resistance. I assume the 8th Amendment was introduced because church and people, seeing the way the wind was blowing, could forecast abortion on demand being imposed on them against their will in the future. Now, after many years of intense propaganda media and politician feel they can finally impose abortion.
JW repeats the point that the idea that progressivism is inevitable is untrue. His point about the connection between abusing priests and homosexuality is brought out in Connor's articles about the Boston witch hunt.
My explanation for what is happening is that we are living in an enormous collective fantasy. Richard Webster says the same (see his superb two-part essay about Nick Davies's Flat Earth News and the Jersey Scandal for example). In his precocious 1969 examination of the astonishing rise of the Swinging Sixties in England, The Neophiliacs, Christopher Booker sees it in terms of a five-stage fantasy cycle (of his own devising I'd say, though he is said to be an accomplished Jungian scholar). It is clear from his books on the subjects that he sees AGW and the EU as fantasies too. Ed West (son of Mary Kenny) makes a similar point (one that I was expecting) at the end of his excellent Diversity Illusion about mass immigration), comparing it to a millenial cult, where the wronger the prediction turn out (the end of the world or the arrival of aliens does not happen) the more support it wins. Donald Trump's complaints about fake news are correct. For example, the current media hysteria about Russian interference in the recent election are completely devoid of evidence (or reason). American commentator James Kunstler is another observer who has been struck by the irrationality, if not downright insanity, of recent events.
Waters's point about cultural marxism is also correct - Peter Hitchens has written with an insider's knowledge on his own blog (so has dissident Spanish historian Pio Moa Rodriguez, but that is a subject in its own right). His point about democracy is also valid. As Brecht said, the elite, having been failed by the people, seek to elect an new people.
The points made by the other speakers about diversity are no more than rhetoric. Any cultural diversity will vanish after a generation or two, the distinctive features of both indigenous population and immigrant being erased to leave, well, what? "Pluralism" is no more than an excuse for authoritarian state power. The more they talk about it the less there is.
The damaging influence of social media, while correct, are well-known and the comments here offer no insight. I would have been more impressed had anyone pointed out (as I noticed on Facebook) that the decision by Germany to admit thousands of alleged refugees in September 2015 was the direct result of hysteria on the social media. Flemish journalist Clementine Le Forissier, an experienced Berlin correspondent, noted at the time (on France Radio) that Merkel's decision was the first time she had seen her make without careful planning but was emotional rather than rational.
I came here in 1987 (against the flow) and I was interested in the work of Desmond Fennell, whose analysis (especially his Postwestern Condition) was proved to have been prescient. I used to go out of my way to read JW's books and articles too. For an understanding of Irish history I must also include the work of Raymond Crotty. I have often said that all the brains and imagination going in this country was given to these three. They all got a hard time from the consensus. I only read other Irish writers (occasionally) as an intellectual and psychological exercise, not for any insights they might have (they don't, as far as I am aware). Perhaps historian Joe Lee could be added to that list. [Edited to add David Quinn.]
So where does Ireland fit into this? It has arrived at the party late and is making up for lost time. Its timing is poor. From memory, these are the final lines from Gabriel Fitzmaurice's poem, Paddy Last:
And the medal goes to Paddy Last, I could hear the village roar.
Now I'm first at last, I cried. I was always behind before!

    • @seancoleman5021

I know I am going on, but John Waters 'Bring back the Black and Tans', as they are preferable to Irish liberals, reminds me of Peter Hitchens' comment about claims that the Islamic terrorists 'don't like our way of life': 'I don't like our way of life either.'

Sean Coleman Outstanding commentary sir. Thank you for taking the time.
I've copied it and will work through your references.
I'm a Brit living in the States. I was awoken to all this cultural (Marxist) madness by Jordan Peterson - before he became a phenomenon! - and at first thought it was a joke. I now realize it's been spreading through the West like a Hidden Plague, and as been fomenting - and fermenting - for decades.
Worst still it is not longer 'hidden'. We are in the Full Reveal and Roll Out phase.
Anyone wanting to see the ultimate consequences of this - as surely as night follows day - read Gulag Archipelago (at least the abriged version).
"Those who aren't aware of history are destined to repeat it".
Time we who value Freedom woke the hell up and took action.

If the decline of religion and the rise of secularism is such a good thing then how come we have such problems with murder, drug abuse, crime and so much marriage breakdown, and so many young men killing themselves. Generally I think we have a lot to be proud of and we've come a long way. I grew up in the 80s and there was a lot of misery. I had to emigrate as did most of my leaving cert class. I moved back in 2016 and i very impressed in many ways but i was really shocked by the crime and widespread mental health issues.
