Black bean burgers are awesome. Even my red meat burger loving husband loves them. vegans can skip the cheese but I love a black bean cheese "burger". I make them spicy -
1 pint /15-16oz cooked black beans (use your hands to "mush"but not 100% mushed, leave some bean pieces), 3-4 TBS fresh finely chopped onion, 2 garlic cloves minced, 1/2 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp dry thyme, 1/2 - 1 tsp chipolte chili powder (to your heat level), pinch salt, 1/4 cup tomato juice or puree, 1 tsp mustard, 3 TBS of flour, panko or bread crumbs to bind (1/4 - 1/2 cup). shape into burgers (makes 4 or 5). Cook in pan with oil or on grill until you get a crispy exterior. Top burger with slice of your fave cheese, slice fresh onion & tomato (jalapenos:-) and sauce ( 2 parts ketchup & 3 parts mayo with garlic powder to taste. yum). bon appetite!
I'm not a vegetarian but I these sound pretty good. Thank you.

Black bean brownies!
black bean and sweet potato Enchiladas is my favorite dish.
Hi Leisa! I haven't canned dry beans since 2020, and I'm getting low. I looked up the instructions, but couldn't remember if I should only fill 3/4 with the beans because of continued expansion. Looked up your video, and my question was answered. :) I'll be canning pintos this week, and hunting down blueberries next week! Thank you, Ma'am!!
Yellow rice & black beans, hot meal.
It’s probably ball trolling four jars..lol…I just bought two cases of pints with lids. Most lids caved in on the sides…as usual. I haven’t bought ball lids in months. Four jars is what I use now. I ordered a huge supply, just love them. Great video Leisa, I’m commenting as I’m watching…fun! Thanks for the video! 🤗😄
I had to buy some new ball jars ,they used to come with the bands and lids in a little box off to the side of the case of jars . now they come on top of the jars I have had alot of failures with them, so I replace them with forjars lids now 😊
I love the ForJars lids. However, I hate to waste, so first use the lids that come with the jars. I soak them in hot/warm water while filling the jars to let the sealing compound regain its shape. So far so good.
That said, when I buy lids, they are ForJars. The difference in quality is apparent!
Been a bean picker for years and that is a lot of stones especially for one bag. Wow.
We eat a lot of black beans here in our Texas household and yes, I only fill the jars 3/4 full with the soaked beans.
So glad you show how to properly soak and prep beans. So much healthier than putting dry beans and water in a jar without soaking.
My favorite is black bean and poblano pepper enchiladas, with or without chicken. I also like chicken tortilla soup with black beans in it. My daughter used to make southwest chili with black beans in it. I can just eat them out of the jar. I watched this video and so far have used it for making small red beans. I just didn’t have enough black beans to can so I will get some tomorrow. The small red beans turned out so yummy! I can’t wait to do the black beans. Thank you!
I use them in place of kidney beans in my chili ❤
Where do u get your beautiful mats u put your jars on? I looked on your Amazon store and Etsy and didn't see any.
Well, I haven’t canned any black beans (yet) but I cook mine in olive oil, and in the brine, with garlic, onion, salt and cilantro until it resembles a porridge. It is an absolute favourite in this house. We eat it with either rice or a tortilla bread.
Sounds delish!
Can you add a picture of your porridge
I just bought some black beans and navy beans from our local co-op. Two pound bags for canning. $5 for two two pound bags. Lots of beans grown in the thumb and shipped around the world
Gooooo Michigan!
Favorite black bean recipes - Cuban Black Beans with rice, Brazilian black beans with rice, taco salad
Omgoodness!! I love your sense of humor!!! "It's not an engagement ring. It's a tool." Perfection!!! 😍 Thanks for all you share. I know it's a ton of work. I appreciate you.
You are so welcome!
I LOVE to can black beans. One of my favorite recipes is a Black Bean and Mandarin Orange Salad and Black Bean Brownies!!
I like to eat black beans over yellow rice, topped with onions. And a side of okra fritters. Yum yum good!
Sounds Delish!
I love black beans on yellow rice!
Newish to canning here! I must have watched this video 10 times and I learn something new each time! Thank you. I love black beans and my favorite way to use them is Cuban, Puerto Rican or generally a Spanish taste. I put it with rice and it's always delicious. Last night I opened 2 of my jars of black beans, seasoned with tons of Sofrito and cumin, Chipotle garlic and onion powder. I used a whole German Farmer rope of sausage and a jar of ugly chicken (it hadn't sealed so I had to use the chicken). Oh and I used liquid smoke. It's already gone! There's only 2 of us but my daughter came over today and finished off what we didn't eat last night! I think it's a new family legendary recipe. 😂
We’re canning pintos this weekend. Have ten pounds of black beans, and five pounds of Navy beans that we seem only to use for soup. Can’t wait to see the chicken recipe. Thanks for all the videos, Leisa.
I canned 14 pints yesterday. I didn't think I liked black beans until I tried them in my chili. I put them with pinto beans last time I made it and I'm hooked. I have made a black bean and corn salsa a long time ago that I'd forgot about. I will be doing that this summer when I get some other fresh ingredients.
Yum!
Black beans are so much fun to can. Yours look great, Leisa. I'll be watching tomorrow for the recipe video, I know it will be amazing. Thank you!
Ooooh Molly, it's so good!
My 'first' order of 350 Forjars lids arrived today & I'm so impressed with their quality! Thank you Leisa, so very much for doing the research & testing to find great lids for all of us to use with confidence. As a beginner, it helps to know that I'm using the best products for my family.
And the discount code didn't hurt a bit either! 😉
You are so welcome!
We are happy that you like it!
I love canning black beans. So convenient to use also low in salt. I use mine in chili in the winter and bean salad in the summer.
Love them!
Literally just bought 4lbs of black beans! Can’t wait til tomorrow yay 😃
Love forjars lids
Thank you! We appreciate your feedback 🙌🏻
I like black beans in salads, Mexican casseroles, chili and even refried. Navy beans hold up well too and I love them in cold salads. Like Bavarian Inns navy bean salad
Love your videos! Can you put a link to the receipt please?

@@forjars first time I have had a company thanking me for purchasing their product, That is Great customer Service.
These are on my to do list. I like black and red beans. Thanks for this video. I can't wait to see your recipe.I found adding slightly mashed black beans to ground turkey with chopped onions, granulated garlic, salt, pepper, and a little Italian seasoned panko makes a great burger. Served on homemade buns! My family liked them and hardly noticed the beans.
I can and use a lot of black beans. Beans and rice, Nachos with beans and cheese, but my favorite is a black bean and garbanzo (chick pea) bean patty which I've developed for my vegetarian daughter. These patties are fabulous. They hold up in buns, and you can crumble them into a salad to bulk up the protein level.
Any bean is one of my favorite thing to can. Even 15 bean soup.
Black bean burgers are my favorite use for black beans.
I put black beans in with toco meat. So yummy, nutritious and more volume to toco meat! 😊
We love the Boston beans, eating right out of the jar
I canned black beans this week and they turned out beautiful. I used 8. 1.5 pint jars, filling them to just below the 2 c line. The pint jar is not enough and quarts are too much. I use the 1.5 pint size for apple filling too. Just the right size for apple crisp.
OMGOODNESS Leisa THANK you for sharing this... This is what my question was the other day ☺️☺️. Should I use this method for All of my beans?? Longer soak then boil for 30 minutes?? Otherwise I only get about half of a jar of beans 🙏🙏 Kendra
I use beans as a substitute for croutons in green salads.
I use black beans and pinto beans for meat substitute for taco night, I don't eat and kind of ground meat. I season them with chipotle peppers and taco seasoning. It's why I need to can more up.
You can never have enough!
US Chef store has 10lb bags of misc. beans.. very reasonable. They also have some in 25 lb bags. I do not know if you have a store near you. Amazing store to purchase in bulk.
I agree 💯 I get quite a few items from US CHEF'S STORE!!!
I canned up 12 pounds of pinto beans this weekend. I used your baked beans recipe for some of them. They smelled amazing. I also used my jiggler for the first time. I love it! It made canning so much easier. I did have to watch your video about it several times to make sure I had it rocking correctly. Now I need to can black beans. Yumm.
Awesome!!
You read my mind. I just brought up black beans to can this weekend. Was going to look for a recipe and bam, your video popped up. Awesome timing! Thanks!
I've gotcha!
Love black beans with Mexican food and in salads
I love your channel!!! I have pinto, black and red kidney beans to can up. Making your chili beans with the pinto and this recipe with my black beans. So excited!!
Thank you for the great video. I love your running conversation. I feel as if we are in the same kitchen. I use black beans to make black bean veggie burgers and black bean soup.
I love making black bean hummus with mine...and the forjars lids are amazing WAY better than the ball and Kerr lids IMO.
Glad to hear that you like our lids! Thank you!
You can make them like refried beans (I mush mine and add bacon grease).
Love making black bean burgers! YUM ❤️🙏❤️
My favorite black bean recipe is Mexican Pot Roast.
YUM!
I love black beans with yellow or Spanish rice!
Love them over rice
I absolutely love canning black beans. Love em in chili 🙂
Looks delish! I see canning black beans for chili in the very near future!
Black bean chili is amazing
Black beans are my favorite too!!😍
I've canned black, pinto, garbanzo and kidney beans so far.. the only ones that have turned out mushy are the kidney beans. You would think a bigger bean would hold up better to a 30 min boil then canning process than a smaller bean, but in my experience, not the case.
Love black beans!!! Can you can them without presoaking?
not safely
Fantastic video. How do you feel about a second rack in the canner? You had more beans and noticed you did not mention it. Thank you.
I dont remember what canner I used. If you have a canner that will hold two layers, grab an extra rack and can away
Yum….looking forward to this recipe..🥰
Hope you enjoy
I was told to add 1/2 beans and 1/2 broth. So I ended up with lots of broth. My recipe is similar to yours.
I did not know to save your cooking broth.
If you did the "dried bean method", then it's 1/2 cup in the pints. Liesa soaked and then boiled hers, so they were pretty much saturated.
I have a nice bean salad recipie, I was wondering if I checked the types of beans in it, I could can them like this, instead of buying a can of each kind of bean, to make it.
When I do that I get an ice cream pail nearly full, and that's way to much for one person.
Ah crap! My last batch I forgot to go thru for stones. I’ll write on the lids to think about stones. It’s only 12 jars, I can do that. I’d hate for me or family to take out a filling or break a tooth! Darn…..
I don't know if quality control has gone down or what. But I never found stones for years (I always checked anyway) but the last few years I have had stones in almost every bag.
It's always a good practice to look.
Same process for other dry beans too, ie; kidney, navy , northern? Thank you
Yes
Look at the ethnic stores. I just got 50 pounds for 36 something.
They had northern priced the same, but they were out of them.
You make this all look SO simple! I adore black beans. My go-to fave lunch is black beans and jack cheese rolled in a tortilla. I’m gonna need more info on that onion recipe, wow!
It is so simple........LOL
I check my beans but it’s the one job I hate when cooking beans.
Oh, I have to do this! I have these in my stock :-)
You should!
Those look good! So handy to have on the shelves. Could onion be added when they are cooking (to flavor the broth) or is it better to add fresh onions to the jars?
Yes you can!
Instapot chicken taco bowl. It has rice, salsa, black beans and corn
YUM!!
Can you use Ball rings with these tops? also, are your beans fully cooked after the long soak and 30 min of boiling/cooking or is the canning process completing the cooking? thanks!
Yes
@@susie.goodwin1356 Thanks Susie
@@tarot_esoterica_with_erin the beans are fully cooked in the canning process. Otherwise for stove top meal prep; follow instructions on the bag. ✌
@@susie.goodwin1356 ✌🏽😄
Thank you for sharing
My pleasure
Did you have enough water from the cooking to cover all the beans or should one add more than the 1-2 inches? Black beans my favorite, hard to find canned ones here, thought this might be worth a try. Nice demonstration, you seem in your glory.
I had enough cooking liquid to cover the beans. Thank you :-)
How much beans did you use for nine glasses of yours? Or better is there a difference between the weight of dry and soaked beans? Thank you and greetings from Berlin Germany
I have had good success canning mine using dry pack method. Do you still do that as well?
Amazon went crazy with dried bean prices. Not cheap. $99 for bulk bag.
Check out tonight's Monday night live
What would be the difference, I did the Boston beans, half beans half liquid. Why black beans, more beans less liquid. Thanks
Hi, I'm relatively new and have a question. When you boil the beans for 1/2 hour. Do you time from the first bubbles or from a rolling boil. It takes a while from the first bubbles to get to a rolling boil for my stove and I think that is why when I tried northern beans they came out mush.
Start timer from boiling point
Leisa, question. Have you ever preserved “fast” beans? I do both canned and “fast,” as the fast beans take up less room in my tightly packed food storage which is all over the house, 😂.
I have no idea what fast beans means
@@SuttonsDaze they are dry beans that have been fully cooked and either freeze dried or dehydrated to store for later use.
@leewillis2908 now I'm more confused. Dehydrating or freeze drying is preserving them
They are a great product to have in the pantry shelves. You cook them normally, then dehydrate or freeze dry, then when you need quick beans you just add water and they rehydrate really quickly!!! Especially good in emergencies when you have limited fuel and/or water!!! @@SuttonsDaze
My husband does not like black beans so I don't use them. Have seen so many people using them. Are you canning beans different than you use too? I know I learbed how to do pinto beans by tou when I .started doing beans.
Just canned 10 pints black beans. Want to make onion stock but don't know how. Any recipes??
ua-cam.com/video/mhf3w63N0JM/v-deo.html
How many lbs dry beans got you 9 pints? I need to start a canning diary, I never remember the ratios I used from the last session!
I used 3lbs and got 11 pints total, but you could fill the jars 3/4 of the way and get 12-13 jars which is what i'll likely do in the future. I also have to make some notes.......haha
@@SuttonsDaze I can them in 1/2 pints because that's all I use with tacos. If I need more for chilli I just open more jars 😉
Did you mark the ones that were full of beans to compare to the 3/4 full?
Did you stop using the no soak method and why? Just curious. Thanks
Yes I did stop. They are a much better end product when you follow the approved method and they are safer.
How long are the beans good for? Will they get mushy if they sit longer?
ua-cam.com/video/he2pSEebjqc/v-deo.html
Do you prefer soaked beans or dry beans for canning? I have noticed when I do dry beans the jars areas full.
I prefer soaked, which also happens to be the safe and approved method.
I am getting ready to can some black beans so that they will be a little easier to use. However, I am the only one in my family that likes them. Is it possible to can them in half-pint jars instead? If so, can anyone tell me what the processing time would be?
Yes you can and the same time as pints
New to canning is it safe to put in 8oz jars and pressure cook for 75 mins??
Yes
How do you make Onion broth?
ua-cam.com/video/EeQT7iOLlOw/v-deo.html
is it ok to lose liquid? i have beans dry at the top. is that ok?
It happens
ForJars worked 100% for me (NOOB).
Thats proof enough for me!
We happy to see your feedback! Thank you!🙌🏻
Oh…what I’d miss? I thought you only fill jar with 1/4th cup beans due to swelling? I remember I filled my pints with pinto to the 1in headspace and I had to toss them out. It as terrible! I’ll need to go back and see if I missed something?
These beans were soaked and almost completely cooked BEFORE she put them in the jar. That's the difference.
I am guessing you are talking about dry beans, these have been soaked overnight and cooked.
expansion has already happened.
Oh…but I soaked my pinto’s overnight too? I filled the pints to the neck, and they still swelled to the point I had to scoop out pinto mush from my jars. I’ll watch the video again. I do see what your saying, but I guess I thought all beans had to be 1/4 fill in pint jars. Maybe she’ll explain in he canning chat tonight. I’ll be watching. As you can tell…I’m confused..I’m sorry, fairly new canner here. But thank you both for your comments! I really appreciate it and always learn from comments….😄
hello, what causes lids to buckle? thanks
Rings put on too tight
Can I ask why you rebel can beans in the past but not these?
I learned over time that doing it the approved way produces a much better end product and it's safe
Why did you precook the black beans but not the fiesta ranch pinto beans.
The directions, per the link provided in the description box are the approved method
I'm confused. I've learned so much about canning watching your channel and the one thing that I have paid close attention to was the maxim that if it's not an approved canning method it's not safe to sit on your shelf and be eaten. I've watched the 1870s homesteader canned beans during Canuary without soakingand pre cooking the beans. I've watched acre homestead, the needy homesteader, rosered homestead and a few other channels do the same. Well I confess the idea of saving time and effort by just washing my dry beans, measuring them into pint jars, and adding hot water we're brave seems like a real attractive proposition. But, I typed in can I can dried beans without pre soaking and cooking and the very first thing I see pop up is that it's not safe. I'm going to guess your advice to me is to soak overnight, drain and rinse ,cook and can. That being said is it safe at all to soak then can dried beans, or do I have to cook them? Can I get by cooking them only 30 minutes? I don't want canned beans that will simply be mushy.
Have you ever canned beans the proper way to see if they are mushy?
They arent.

I canned these a few months ago. There was liquid covering them when I took them out. Now, there is NO visible liquid! 1st time canning beans and I am wondering if they are still ok to eat? They drank all the liquid...🤷♀️
They are good, they keep absorbing the liquid
