- This is a slightly different zipper installation technique that I thought I'd try using one piece for the outer fabric, and one for the lining. In this video, I'll give you two more options for the zipper installation using two different sizes.
I'd love to know what you think. Is this something you'd try? Here's the original video • How to sew a one piece...

I think I prefer the regular method (with the tabs) but seeing this other technique was certainly interesting! I always love learning new things
Thanks so much Debbie😁
I agree with your zipper preference Christine...great job and sweet fabric!!❤️
Thanks Jessie😀
I agree, your way comes out so much better. I will stick with your ways, No reason to put a zipper in this way.....except for on pockets. lol Thanks for the video it was great.
Thanks Paula😁
The Christine way is the best way !!!
Genius!! Never tjought of using a welted zipper on the top of a bag.
Thanks paulette. They're especially great for leather bags😁
I agree, your method looks just as good and is a lot more simple. Thanks for your trouble in showing the other options but yours is by far better especially if you want to make more than one.
My pleasure Barbara. Thank you😀
Nope - I think there are other and better ways to put in zippers and the usual way you do it is the best imo. Very interesting video, thanks Christine.
Totally agree. I'd much rather zipper tabs😊
I prefer the Butler and tab method, but I also like the bound zipper. Again, thanks for your expertise.
You are so welcome Kathleen. Thank you😁
I love your process for overcoming the raw zip issue. The binding method looks the simplest and actually makes it look very cute. Great job! 😊
Thanks Sue. Unless I'm ussing unlined vinyl, I don't think I'll use that technique though😁
I do like the one with the binding if I had to make a bag that way. But I much prefer your original bag when I am sewing. I personally have no need for all the extra work. Thank you for sharing. I learn so much from you. 😊
Thanks Babs. It was way too much work for me too😀
Totally agree with you again Christine! Your tabs are the best looking and easier way to insert. Cannot see any reason for this method except for pockets. Thank you again for taking the time to test different methods. You did, most certainly, improve the look of the original insertion. Looking forward to your next project.
Thanks Penny. It was a good learning experience, and confirmation that tabs are easier😀
The binding on the zipper looks great! It can be used just to make the zipper more colorful
It could be a good feature Kenna😁
I’ve been wondering about doing the zips like this, I’m so glad you did it for me! I favor the zip tab on one end and the butler on the opening end
You are so welcome! Thank you😁
Love using the double stick tape!! Also, I started using the end pieces with fabric like you do! Great ideas!❤
Yes, that tape is such a time saver Carol😁
I did like both of them but yep I prefer your original method with the tabs. So much easier and it looks nice too. X
Thanks Christine. It was a good experiment to do and leaern from😀
I like the interfacing pieces the best!
Thanks Lucy. It turned out the neatest of the three😀
That was genius coming up with the interfacing, but it does look rather fiddly like you say, I think I would rather cut the fabric apart and and use the "tried and true" tab method to make this bag. Thank you so much for showng us all these alternatives. You rock!!
I do something similar. I don't interface with iron on, but sew on. Then, if needed, I either use washable school glue or sticky tape to hold it in place if needed -- which is rare. Typically it folds back just fine and after a bit of ironing stays on the back.
Thanks Cynthia. This method was certainly tedious and not as good as tabs😀
Wow this is a lot of work! I think I will stick with your usual way!
I agree Sara. It really was too much work😀
Thanks Christine for working it out. You have such a creative mind.
You are so welcome Dianne. Thank you😀
Thank you Christine’s I like the tab method !
Thanks Lida. Me too😀
I too prefer the traditional way of doing it but thank you for letting us see your experiments and for showing things even when your not satisfied yourself!
My pleasure Sofie. Thank you😀
Wow Christine great job putting a binding on the zip I was wondering if it could be done but didnt know how to do it or figure it out on how it could be done so thanks for showing us will try this
Thanks Pamela. I think ribbon would work well too😁
I’d try those lacy edge zippers in the pink bag to give a nicer visual, maybe?!. I like the tabs the best! Thanks
Thanks Patricia. The lacy zips would make a nice feature😀
I agree with you. I prefer zipper tabs on both sides of the zipper . But i like the tabs to be without raw edges, like the ones you put in this project.
Thanks Elena. I prefer the tabs too😁
Although you came up with a brilliant solution with the facings, i still prefer the original way you do them. It might be nice to do one of the other methods if you are attaching the pouch to the outside of a larger bag. Might still be allot though. Whichever way, I love seeing these different method you come up with. Thank you!
Thanks Brenda. I prefer the tabs too😁
I’m with you on this one, prefer the tab method and not sure I could be bothered with binding a zip unless you wanted a different colour, I’ve seen that used before. Thanks for showing us lots of methods to choose from x
Thanks Susan. Tabs are much quicker and easier to work with😁
I think that the best method would depend on the type of fabric used. The insert methods gives the option of positioning the zip towards the front of the bag which would have the advantage of allowing rings to be placed closer to the top of the bag for a handle and thus makes the zip more of a feature. If I buy fancy Italian zips($$) or one that has a special zipper pull it would show more. I like the options for variety in this simple bag. I have to add that I have had trouble using the double stick tape. I hasn't been sticky enough to hold the zip firmly for sewing. Not sure if the tape I bought was old stock or the brand I could get here in California. Getting the plastic strip to come off the side of the tape is fiddly for me and takes too much time. Thank you! Love your clear instructions😃
Thanks Amrita. That's a good idea for rings at the top too😀
I've been making zip bags for some time but i must say i don't like this style at all, the zip shortens too much making the opening too small, I'm glad you tried it so i don't have to lol
That's what I'm here for Lee. To test things out for you. I agree though, the opening is too small😁
I like the bag with the bag with the black zip. I do like your way best the others are to fussy. Just tell me how can you cut that pansy fabric, I have collected a tub full over many years and can't cut any.. oh dear
Thanks Christine for all your effort.😊
haha, that fabric is so cute Janet. 😀
I like the idea of hiding it in the lining.
But when I make a tote or zipper pocket, I use a piece of the same fabric instead of interfacing. I do it exactly the same way a traditional zipper pocket or bag would be done. Then fold it in, add the zipper to the lining of the zipper and then stitch it to the outer fabric. I learned that one from Qting Craft Studio.
That's another great idea. Thank you for sharing😀
100% Tabs!
haha. 100% agree Tracy😀
I like your way better 😊
Thanks Sandy. Me too😁
The box corners need to be cut in 3D view. The tapered edges cut at 90*degrees, otherwise the corners will flop and won't be straight '-)
Thanks for the tip Rosina😁
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs saw this explanation and tutorial from OK Sew, which I found very useful.

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs your welcome ☺️
I was wondering why you prefer to box the corners by cutting out a square in the initial fabric layout. Why do you prefer that to not cutting out the square, sewing the seams, then folding the sides on the bottom to a triangle, sewing the triangle, and then cut it?
Hi Carmela. I actually don't prefer to cut out corners first, but do that for viewers as sometimes it's easier for beginners. For all my production sewing, I fold and sew the corners at the machine😀
Do you have a video showing recessed zippers and the one where the tabs hang off the sides? If not, I'd like to see those.
I have a few videos Bonnie. If you do a search for "recessed" on my channel, a few options will come up www.youtube.com/@ChristinesHomeAffairs/search?query=recessed 😀
I think these methods make a more restrictive opening. When I reach into my purse I want to be able to see what I'm digging for and use both hands if necessary.
I'm not sure that explains my dislike very well. I'm getting old and the words aren't as easy to find as they used to be.
I totally agree. I found the opening was too small too😀
I’m sticking to your way or the butler method. The zip opening using these two methods is too small and it’s too time consuming…..IMO. Well done you. And thanks.
Thanks Claire. It was way too fiddly😀
🪡🪡🪡🥰🥰🥰👝👝👝👝🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you Joy😀
Suggestion: when you create the box corners, the side that is angled should have it's cut perpendicular to the cut angle, meaning that you should measure in not from the uncut side, but from the cut side, so that each cut is perpendicular to it's relative side. See this explanation: ua-cam.com/video/RQM_pZOQiS0/v-deo.htmlsi=y6bdY6wGuLJlJy3s
Yes, you're right. I did that in another video previously. Thanks for the tip😁
The reason, is for a professional - well made look. I think having the zipper edges showing, as in the first bag, is cheap, and unprofessional. If I'm going to pay the prices you charge, I don't want to see the zipper like that. Other people sell bags for the same amount or more, btw...I just expect to see good sewing practices, on things I spend my money on...AND the things I put my name on. -- especially, must look well made, and show I care what I put out. After all, my NAME is on it.
Totally agree with you. My name and reputation are important to me. I'll even refuse certain alterations jobs if people won't let me do a job I'll be proud of😁
