Really like the way you cut the metal and inlayed the board into into it. That was what I was trying to figure out what to do with the metal on my door that I am getting ready to build.
Dud, your skills are far beyond most of us. Brain work too! What ever you decide on the finish; I will like. You are a great handyman, - just like Norm! Great job!
+1234tric Thanks man! I was recently compared to Diresta, now Norm...Those are some big shoes to fill. Im honered to be compared to those great craftsman. Thanks for the support buddy and the kind words!
Brandon, I've been welding and fabricating for about 23 years now and prefer to build my own stuff ( table, welding carts, cherry picker, shop press, car Rotisserie) instead of buying. Also been building sheds, decks, garages, anything made of wood, and I have to say they're the nicest hinges I've seen made on UA-cam. Great video and great job. 2 THUMBS UP
Thank you Patrick for the very nice comment! I really didn't have much of a plan when I set out to build the hinges, I kinda made it up as I went, but I am very happy how they came out. Thank you! :)
Simple and interesting. Thought you would add recycled pallet wood over the metal sheet especially on the outside. But it is simple..just 5 pieces of pallet woor
What a great Instructional video. This is just what I needed to see. you do such fantastic work. I love working with wood but welding is the one thing that I never learned how to do. Maybe there is still time if I can find a class? Anyway thanks for taking the time to help those of us out that are trying to be as good as you are and maybe some day I will be. Your great.
+Barb Walk Thank you so much for the nice comment! You made my day! If you enjoy working with wood, you would probably love mig welding! There are a lot of good youtube channels dedicated to learning how to weld. One channel in particular that I really enjoy is called "Welding tips and tricks". He has a learn how to mig weld series which is great. I'll put a link to that series for you down below. Mig Welding Basics: ua-cam.com/play/PLp0pALmMwc6v2ScmEGbvNSpNKcYA8GiGA.html
+Brina D Thank you for your compliment :) It doesn't always work out, but sometimes it does and i get to make a cool video about it! Thanks for watching Brina!
I’m not sure it would look better. Either way looks nice just depends on what you want. It is kind of a dark space so maybe shiny is better in this case.
+Jason B Thanks Jason! I think I'm leaning that way also. The only thing holding me back is I have never tried to make something rust before. I'm a little scared of messing it up :)
+Jason B Thanks Jason! I think I'm leaning that way also. The only thing holding me back is I have never tried to make something rust before. I'm a little scared of messing it up :)
Great fun to watch and a beautiful outcome! You asked for thoughts on finish.... I would definitely have stained wood gray... and the rusted metal would be lovely! Try some test samples first so you do't worry about ruining that incredibly built door! BTW,... what is that tool you used to cut the metal..? awesome!
+ensign4Him Thank you so much! I will be trying some rusty panels very soon. I think the tool you are refering to is a plasma cutter. It's the one I used in the beginning to cut the door metal. Then I used a portable band saw for the rest of the project.
I think you are very skilled but I expect the shop is worth at least $30,000 and that's not for weekender guys. I'm building a business in The Philippines and hope I can build a shop adequate to do this sort of work. I'll continue watching. Thank You.
Thank you and I appreciate your support. It's a little than 30k but it doesn't take long to add up. It took me many years to build up my tool collection to what it is today. I wish you well starting your business! 👍
Your video did a great job explaining this project. My only question is what is the tool you used to cut the metal roofing? Looks like it really does the job!
Hey Laura, Thanks! The tool I was using is a a plasma cutter. The one I'm using in the video is fairly inexpensive. If you want to know more about this tool, here is a video I did a while ago about it ua-cam.com/video/REZXOpgd8kQ/v-deo.html Have a great day!
No really. I need one at my shop. What was that thing that just buttered right through? Not the grinder but the 1st thing? Now i gotta go find scrap tin😆😆😆😆!
Noice! If you want a neat finish on the metal, you'll be wanting to tape off the wood and use spray paint, so that you don't have to mess with the galvanizing. That or the expensive elastomeric roof coating. I'm thinking the green would look good in your shop.
I like that idea! I think you mentioned a while back about using some 1/16" harbor freight rods... I picked some up and used them to make my "sparker video". Your right, they burn super fast! I will have to give them a try on an actual project tho
Brandon Lund They burn up quick, but they're perfect for thinner sheet metal if you don't have a TIG, and great for making small details on artistic pieces. They wiggle like crazy though, but if you can get steady with them, then a 1/8" 7018 suddenly feels like a surgeon's tool in your hand.
Brandon Lund If there's a commercial roofing company near you, they get 5-gallon buckets of that elastomeric roof coating in a few colors. The buckets run about $800, but if you take an empty quart can with you and offer a plug for the company in your video or just toss them $20, they'll probably let you fill it up. Stuff's expensive, but properly applied has a 20-40-year warranty (depending on manufacturer) on a roof, so on your shop door it'll last damn near forever. I both do and don't miss roofing. It sucked, but was fun. Kind of like the military.👍
The one in the video is no longer made but I have another plaasma cutter that I have been using for a while now and love it. Here is a video about plasma cutting along with a link in the video description where you can buy it ua-cam.com/video/pmNVH1XtWBA/v-deo.html
This pallet came from a local plumbing supply store. It probably had equipment shipped on it. I believe motorcycles are shipped on long pallets also so that might be a good source also.
The average man can not do this! He has the tools and the skills, I am sure his wife is happy, but the not all men can do what this guy can. Show off on the hinges, but wonderful talent.
+Danny Allen I totally agree. I've been doing some experementing with solutions...just a little hesitant to put it on the door. My luck says I will ruin it. Lol.

What size nail did you use for putting the metal between the two pcs of wood?
I think they were 16 ga. if i remember correctly.
What the details on the torch used to cut the door??

nice hinges.. cool men.
Thanks you!
Nice! What size nail did you use and how long? and did it have any problem going thru the metal? Thanks
I used 18 Guage x 1 1/4 and they punched right through the metal
Brandon Lund thanks!
leave it as is! the feat displayed in crafting it alone should be enough, maaaaybe a darker stain BUT that's IT. Excellent work sir.
Thanks man! I appreciate your support!
Hi - is that stainless for part of the hinges? was attempting hinges myself at the moment.
+Graham Higgins Everything is mild steel.
+Graham Higgins Everything is mild steel.
I like your idea from start to finish. I think I would just let it age naturally. Develop it's own patina frim its environment.
+Arin Cee I'm still torn. Part of me likes how it looks now and the other half wants to experiment with something different. Decisions decisions :)
Which palets have the long pieces ?????
This pallet came from a local plumbing supply store. It probably had equipment shipped on it. I believe motorcycles are shipped on long pallets also so that might be a good source also.
Leave it natural, clear coat it!

that is cool made more videos like that one
Hi brandon i liked a lot this project i also want to make my own garage door but i have no idea how to it. Best regards
+Ati Hun thank you very much!
patina on metal. wood darker Brown. I love that idea.
+Tammy Finch Thanks for watching!
Nice work! Love that you hand made the hinges - was it cheaper than buying? Or just more fun? Cheers.
+Warrick Taylor Making the hinges was cheaper than buying them because I used mostly all scrap...and it was a lot more fun too! Thanks for watching!
Ahahahahah the felling of making something yourself.
Very interesting project and skills but I think the steel panel is too thin.
😆great job
Pro Gaming Thank you!
What size are your pallets. You guys make things look too easy!
faith smith thank you 😊 this was a big one! 8 feet roughly. I’m guessing a motorcycle or snowmobile was shipped on it.
Dope door! Hinges look great too. Are you a welder by trade?
+Chad Burke Thank you! I'm completely out of the trades now, but I spent 20+ years as a carpenter. Much of that time was spent welding though.
Awes
ขอบคุณครับ (thank you) thailand (bang kong)
+SOMKHID PANOMPHUM Thank you for watching!
you could paint all the metal in black hammerite (gun-metal) finish.
either way, nice work and thank you.
+Paul Cullen that's actually an awesome idea! I might have to do some experimenting with this! Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
I say patina finish but it does look good as it is, great job
Thanks JNZO44
Yes rust it out!!!
Looks good.. be better aged though.. ether paint or rusted..
+Les Vosloo I agree. I think I'm going to try a rusted finish on it. It might make for an interesting video! Thanks for watching!

I wish I have the tools that you have 😫
Dunia Goméz it took me a while to build up this collection.
cool door. Should say metal door trimmed in pallet wood, though. It's really not a wood door.
patina metal and a stain that matches the frame around the door that darker gray color
+Danny Allen I totally agree. I've been doing some experementing with solutions...just a little hesitant to put it on the door. My luck says I will ruin it. Lol.
