Where have you been all these years that I’ve searched for bag tutorials? You’re the best!
Thank you!
Hi. Andrea I love your bag tutorials. I decided to make the bag as a prototype with the zipper, I couldn’t have made it more difficult for myself if I’d tried. I used faux leather! I am going to give it another go using fabric. ThAnk you for your creative genius, I salute you. Xx
That does sound tricky! I am sure the fabric will make it easier for you!
What a wonderful teacher
Thank you Tracy!
This is a fabulous tutorial. You are so talented and thorough in your teaching. Thank you so much for sharing your skills.
Thanks Dolores! I am happy you think so and are enjoying the channel!
I am so glad I found your channel. This bag is perfect to bring all my stuff to work
This is the easiest way I have seen to put the zipper gusset in. Great tutorials!!
This method is new to me - what a brilliant time and effort saver! Many thanks for sharing.
U r a very nice Lady and u take your time talking and explaining how to do your bags, I really enjoy myself coming to your class.
This the BEST WAY I HAVE SEEN...SOOOO EASY. Now I'm not afraid to put one in. So easy, thank you so much.
I have been watching your tutorials on yt and absolutely love the way you teach. I have bee totally off zippers for decades and this weekend I actually did a cosmetic pouch, did not come out perfect, but it's ok, I overcame the fear of the zipper. Now I am going to try it on a huge bag I am making.
Thank you so much
I love your video. It seems so simple to make, yet classy. Thank you for the instruction.
Am finding so many great vlogs from you. Thank you.
Welcome to Sewspire! We are so glad you have joined our creative community! XO, Andrea
I thank you for this information, and instruction for this tote. I did add pockets on the inside and zipper pocket on the outside.
I just made one right now with one big inside pocket, Gorgeous Thanks and waiting for the Pocket you said you were going to do.
love your color choices
i did it the best i could without complete directions...i forgot them at my home and sew only at my mother's home. I was amazed the interior fit the exterior bc i wasn't sure what the seam allowances were. My handles came out too wide I think...again, my fault for forgetting those measurements at home. Your tutorial was so clear, however. I remembered the main measurements. I was pleased with the practice one. I just cut up five more to get started on Christmas projects. Thanks for the inspiration.
really like these directions. Thank you, too, for not lingering on the stitching of seams. such a nice bag. tku.
I actually like when the videos shows the sewing as I'm a pretty new sewist.
I´m so fascinated with your sewing room, is so cute
Very easy installation of the zipper. Thank you, just what I was looking for. My Yankee tote I made weeks ago really needed a zipper and it turned out great!
So glad you like the tutorial. Thank you for watching!

Beautiful
great to bag I like the way to insert the zip. thank you for a great video! 😃👑👑👑👑👜
Hi Andrea, I have loved bags and totes forever and have many dozens that I've purchased. I am a relatively new sexist (less than a year), done a bit of quilting, made some napkins, tablecloth, etc. Recently I've been wanting to make a tote and have been obsessively watching youtube videos - but many seem quite complicated and so I've been intimated. Until today, when I watched a few of your videos and I've made my first tote! I am so please and excited - your process is so straight forward and fairly easy, even I was able to do it.
I made this tote out of linen / cotton blend - it is just beautiful! thank you so much for your complete yet simple instructions. I like that there is nothing extra. I am imagining my 2nd tote already. blessings to you.
Hello Melanie and welcome to Sewspire! I am so grateful you have taken the time to share your story with our creative community. It means a lot to me to know that the videos are being well received and the instruction is straightforward. I have big plans for this channel in 2017 and would like to invite to you stay tuned for the many sewing projects and studio inspiration that is yet to come! Happy sewing my friend! XO, Andrea
Great tutorial, have made many bags but you have inspired me to make one with the zip across, thanks
Yay!
Thank you for this step by step tutorial. I'm a little freaked out about adding a zipper to a tote but I think I will give it a try now!
Good luck! I was terrified of zippers for years and am confident you can do this :)
Very Beautiful Bag👌👌
I am so pleased with your tutorial, I was afraid to do zippers also. Now I want to try to make a bag like you did as I love your bag. "you are a great instructor"!
You can do it! Thank you for watching!
Really great directions, thank you! I would like to make.
How kind of you to put the measurements in the description! I am actually getting everything ready at one time. Thank you so much for the great video and sharing this tote with us.
Your all purses very nice and ezzy method. I like all purses
Very nice
I love your videos!
Sooo cute, thank you!!!
I'm glad you like it! Thank you!
I really look forward to your tutorials
Thank you!

Thank you! God Bless you too!
Love this bag I am definitely going to try this. Thank you for making a video that is so easy to understand.
nice sewing room 😀
i love the bag!!support your video!!(PS,I am come from Taiwan)
Andrea, this is a beautiful and very handy Large Tote, I have made a couple (as baby 👶 bags) thank you, I am Mónica from Bolivia 🇧🇴 📍✂️
I love making baby bags! So glad you enjoyed the tutorial and are having success with the design. ~Andrea
Somewhat unusual procedure but seems to work alright. Good idea if one wants to add a zipper gusset to an already finished bag.
Thank you for this! Gusset zippers are no longer my enemy :) Also, glad to see another person sewing in bare feet!
Hi Andrea! 😊 I've been following you for awhile and have watched most of your videos. I love your calm, clear directions! Have you ever made a clear vinyl NFL approved stadium bag? 🏈👜 I would love to see a tutorial on one!! ❤️
Thank you for your continued interest! I have not made a stadium bag before. The laminated cotton fabrics are fairly easy to sew with; but, I don't have any experience sewing with the vinyl. So sorry I can't be of more help.
I have subscribed to your channel and enjoy your tutorials. Thanks for sharing your creative talents with so many. I am just curious as to why you do not use a zipper foot when attaching the zipper into the fabric panels?
Thank you for writing! There is no particular reason why I don't use the zipper foot. It would work just as well --- maybe even better --- than adjusting the needle position. Happy sewing! Andrea
Cute tote....love the fabric, too. How do you sew just sitting on wooden stool? My back would be killing me. I enjoy all of your tutes.
Yep, just a plain old wooden stool. My back actually aches more if I use a chair with a back. Odd, I know.
great video . love watching ur videos. pls will u let me know that in metre how much cloth will i need. thnxs!
Hello and thank you for watching! I am not sure what the conversation would be, so sorry. In yards, I would suggest 1.5 yards each of two coordinating prints or 1 yard each of three coordinates. Happy sewing! Andrea
I had my headphones on and some pusating sound like a helicopter drove me crazy but other than that, great tutorial!
What is the actual size of the bottom of the tote? Love the tutorial. I only had a problem at the fat quarter ends and I measured up 3 inches to cut off versus 6 inches to cut off. But it was a wonderful tutorial.
Like the tutorial and the tote is really cute. The directions for sewing the “fat corner” are a little confusing. If you measure a 6 inch depth and sew/cut that, a large potion of your tote will be gone. I believe depth is from top to bottom and I think you are measuring 6 inches across and therefore the sewing line is 6 inches across. The depth would actually only be 3 inches from the tip of the triangle to where you want your sewing line to be.
You are correct. The actual sewing line is 6". Sorry that wasn't clear. Please let me know how your bag turns out.

Very nice
Andrea, this is an awesome bag! Love it! Also, I love your to! Did you make it?
Alice Bair thank you Alice! I didn't make the top; but, would love to find a similar pattern and make another! It's from a store named Uni Qlo
I'm curious as to what Janome machine I often see watching your videos. I have the 8080 Harmony as well as 2 Kenmore 385.1960180 machines
Do you have a preference??
Suzanne Hunt-Burke Hello! I primarily sew on the Janome Magnolia. It's been my favorite sewing machine for almost five years now. I also have a Brother SQ9185 and Janome DC2012 which I use on occasion. Happy sewing!
loved the video, they are all wonderful, however I would like a closeup video of the zipper part. I think the black fabric and your back to the window made it more difficult to see exactly what you were doing. thank you!
I agree. I am always trying to work with the light in this space. Thank you for sharing!
Hello dear lady. You always have wonderful colour and pattern combinations with your bags. The only thing for me is that the light in the room seemed to be a little low. I couldn't quite see as well as I wanted. I have problems with my back so I use my iPad to look at videos. Then I can be on my bed with pillows and such.
I zipper idea I've seen before only a little differently. I understand why people are a bit hesitant with it. You do have to have some experience with zippers to do it. One idea I use is to get some 'magic tape'. That will hold the zip and casing while you sew. Just a thought.........
Thank you Nancy! I am always trying to master the lighting and some days it is a bit of a challenge. Thankfully in our new studio we have more natural light. I hope you will check out some of the fresh content. I try to post once a week. Love the idea of using magic tape as well. ~Andrea
Sewspire oh you're a treasure 💜 I certainly check more videos. Thank you 🌹
Yes zipper needs a definite close up
Yes, I agree. It is often a challenge to run the camera and teach. I wish I had a helper.
I will made all purses
Love your video and tote bag fabric. Is there a number for the fusible fleece.
I don't know the # so sorry. I buy it at Walmart off the bolt. Do you have a fabric section at your Walmart?
Yes, my Walmart has fabric. I will check it out. Thanks
I am working on this now, how far from the seam do you stop sewing the gusset? you mentioned the tails but I am not clear as to where do I start sewing it in and how far from seam do I stop?
Start with 3" from the side seam and see how that looks. You can always add more stitching.
very good instructions aside from the zipper part. I think you need a close up on that.
Will schedule a tutorial with a close up on the zipper soon!
Sewspire the pellon craft fuse, can I use it as a stabilizer/interfacing in this project. I'm not sure I have a nice size piece of it.
I bought a metal separating zippee, but it's 24", is there a way to cut it or is it to long for the size of the tote. Please advise. Thank you
I think that will be too long. You can cut zippers; but, it does get a little tricky. You may want to tape the zipper ends with masking tape before you cut so that everything stays put :)
Awesome tutorial! However if you could do a closeup of the zipper part (your camera is too far away) it would be very helpful! Happy sewing from Texas
Thanks Debbie! I am always learning and trying new things with the camera and will shoot to do better next time!
mam your top looking so pretty...... pls share video how to make this...pls mam its humble request to u...
Hi Miss Sewspire I just love all of your bags projects, u take your time talking and u r very easy to listen to, I never did that type of zipper for bags and i am learning how to do a zipper for bags, sew I will pull my scraps out and try to follow u on making the
recessed zipper. (question, what is the 5/8 and the 3/8 stitched numbers on the sewing machines), blessed u to u and family.
Thank you. The numbers on the machine are your seam allowance guides. Use either for bag making. XO, Andrea
Hi Andrea, What is the purpose of an extra long zipper? I think it's to give you easier access to the bag? Is it more difficult to install a shorter zipper, like a 14 inch one?
Yes, I do think the shorter zippers are harder to work with.
Thanks , I'll be looking forward to your close-up zipper install!
I've watched this tutorial a few times, and made two bags so far. I have a difficult time understanding how the edge of the zipper gusset is supposed to be sewn in when it is longer than the width of the tote. When tucking the gusset under, how do the seam edges get sewn closed if one is to stop a couple of inches from the edge seams?
Hi Sharon! Join us our next project which begins Tuesday at 2 p.m. and see an easier zipper installation in the third segment to be published 3/9/21.
i have never seen a zipper done like that before...
Hi Andrea, after sewn into your bag, is the total length of the exposed strap about 25-26 inches?
Hello! I gifted the bag to a friend; so, I can't measure the total length of the strap for you. So sorry. If the handle drop is 12" the total length would be very near 26".
I am new to sewing. Love to try this. May I know what type of fabric is there. Bcoz it look stiff than normal cotton fabric.
I just picked this fabric up at Walmart. It is regular quilt weight cotton. The fusible interfacing or cotton batting offers additional stability.

harika
Hi, hope you are getting advertising revenue because there is an ad for "tote bag" under this video. Great tutorial!
TheRoseLine ii
What are the actual finished measurements height width and bottom. Thank you🌸
I'm not sure this was a while ago...sorry.
you said the word, terrify, thats exactly what happens to me. I see your videos but the ones with zipper i dont dare to make.
Someday you might work up the courage. Perhaps something smaller to start such as a cosmetic bag?
I hope i get the courage. Thanks
If I use upholstery fabric would I still need to use the fusible fleece?
No, I think that would be too thick with the fleece. The upholstery fabric should be just fine by itself.
You did not specify that the top panel was going to be on the bottom. Does it really matter which piece goes on the bottom?
It does not matter and I do remember getting mixed up on that. So sorry.
thank you for responding, i just went ahead and did it like the video. Also i love your videos im going to be doing alot of things right along with you.
what if its not a separating zipper
That will work too; but, it is note quiet as easy to attach the zipper gusset to the bag. If possible, I highly recommend going with the separating zipper.
thank you for sharing.......for me I would like close up of your work......we can see you working but not the work it self.
Thank you Janet! We are moving into a new studio this week and I will see if I can get a better angle on the camera for our future tutorials. XO, Andrea
I love your videos and your projects. You make everything easy and your tutorials are very descriptive and easy to follow. I don't mean to offend or embarrass but as a former teacher please refrain from saying "EITHER" when you mean both. "Either" implies one or the other and that is not your intention.
That is good to know. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and rest assured I am not offended. My apologies for misspeaking. Happy sewing! Andrea
Went to watch this one and no sound.
That's odd!
Nice but we can’t see your camera to far... don’t know what you’re really doing!!!
Sorry about that
