hi there, for a guitarist, you can do what you said stand straight and play or sit down & do the same thing. Sit straight towards the edge of the chair, with both feet flat on the ground hip width apart, the back of the guitar you should feel very close to your tummy so that when u breathe u can feel ur tummy move towards ur guitar if you are breathing deeply. and if you sing into a mic, make sure you pull the mic in close rather than strain your neck forward towards the mic. hope that helps!
Thanks for your comments! I'm really glad you're finding my videos useful=) Happy practicing...I will be putting out a video on a Demi Lovato song real soon...so watch this space!
Yes, basically every time you break in before you sing the next phrase, you want to be able to feel your lower body expand, sometimes lots, sometimes a little - depending on what you are singing and how much breath is actually needed. The back breathing and bending over just helps people who find it hard to actually feel their lower body expand feel it more
Bearing in mind that I am not a medical professional, my best advice would be to do a lot of stretching of your body - I've personally found Pilates & Yoga really good for getting rid of tension in the body. But to incorporate stretching as a part of your daily life, like when you've been sitting for an hr at a desk, get up and stretch your back and neck - that sort of thing...Hope that helps! Glad you like my vids, I do try to make them simple and fun. Thanks for your words of encouragement
Definitely GREAT breath support is integral. Opening your throat every time you breathe in. And generally just good vocal health, like manuka honey drinks & steam for your vocal cords
Corrine, if it's hurting, you're mostly likely not standing in correct alignment but instead putting pressure on your lower back by maybe trying too hard to stand too straight. I recommend taking Pilates classes to really learn about correct posture. Good luck
As someone suffering from depression while trying to fulfil my dream of becoming a folk singer I find these breathing exercises not only good for practice breathing but also very mentally soothing. As singing requires relaxation as we learned from the previos video, these breathing exercises truly are a win-win thing. :)
This was outstanding. So many singers miss the breathing part or downplay the significance of a deep, low breath. They also don't realize that this can be very physically demanding at first, but so important.
Generally, when we are warmed up properly , we sound heaps better. There is less strain and we are better able to control our vocal break. We also can sing higher. Try my Effective Warm Up video for a great daily vocal warm up
Haha...good question. Generally you can sing straight away after a meal. I guess the main thing to know is that if you have to sing after a meal, it's best to have a light meal and not eat too much!
this question is hard for me to answer esp without hearing your voice and not knowing where you r at now as a singer. but if you practice regularly & CORRECTLY, you should begin to hear incremental improvement every week...
How do you NOT have millions of views! I love your videos. You go over many things that dozens of singers (including myself) have problems with, and you always find an amazing way to explain things in your videos. Not only that, but you don't take singing WAY too seriously as most singing teachers do, and you don't tell everyone in your videos to "buy this video series" or "get on this conference call" You just put that stuff in your description. Thank you so much for.... well, being you! :)
Hi Steve, if you are also in Melbourne - you should book an In-Person lesson =) I would love to work with you, it is NEVER too late and you will continue to be more surprised and delighted by what you can do with your voice =) I hope to hear from you. Feel free to send me an email to discuss further. Good luck! Oh and thanks for the affirmation!
practice breathing exercises lying flat on your back observing how your stomach fills up naturally like this and then try to transfer it to when you stand. It does take time, so be patient and keep practicing. Or get vocal coaching if you still find you have lots of trouble.
#HowToSing101 #CorrectPostureAndEffectiveBreathing #SingingTips How to sing 101 Part 2 - How to sing great with correct posture and effective breathing
Wow after figuring out posture and to not be so tense like i always am, my voice was sweeter and flowed out! It's just that it sounds a little soft and airy and some points...
Not sure what you mean by 'tightness'? If you do this correctly, you should feel your ribs open up. Although at the beginning it may feel a little strange
Wow, you're a phenomenal teacher! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this! Funny, informative, and interesting---couldn't ask for anything better!
This has helped me so much Kerri! Thank you..my Judy Garland "Torch " songs are so much better! Especially.."The Man That Got Away"...major fat tummy time! Lol Thank you!!
I just loved your channel especially this video. The most detailed, cheerful and energetic tuts I have ever seen..! The explanations and comparisons are wayy awesome :) Thank you so much..!
This means you are pushing your chest voice up Shaun, you need to let your voice flip and start strengthening your head voice and mixed tone. Continually doing what you are doing will cause vocal damage in the future, so please be careful...
Kerri, these videos are very helpful so I thank you for making them;however I watched your vibrato video and I can't get it down. Could you help by explaining more or making another video? Also, what does vibrato feel like. Thanks again -Jeremy
Awesome video. However, I did find it a little difficult to understand the breathing since I can't see the screen. Awesome videos though. On a side note, could you post a video on how to sing like carrie underwood, specifically the song Undo It or Change? Merce beaucoup.
Hey, I was wondering if you could give me some tips for keeping my singing voice as healthy as possible, Whilst being a screamer for a band. I'm not sure if you're experienced in this area of vocals or not, but I would appreciate some sort of feedback!
Hey, I love to sing, I've been singing since I was little, but I have a question, how do I know if I've warmed up properly before singing? Thank you in advance!
I was just wondering. How do you apply the breathing exercises to actual singing? Am I supposed to feel my ribs expand or stomach pop out (or both at the same time) when singing? Also, I've seen some back breathing exercises with people bent over, but don't understand how that is helpful. Thanks.
Hey kerri really helpfull video but how do i know that im doing it right It feels like im breathing low and my stomach ribs and back extend but i still feel strain on my voice when i sing. I really dont want to end up with nodes because i love singing.
When i was doing the counting exercise; i wasnt feeling my stomach expand. Instead it kind of tensed up. I would love to be able to sing like James Labrie from Dream Theater. And i cando his lower range beautifully and i can do his high range as well. But i feel im doing something wrong. Any tips?
i do notice that u talk about posture, but how would u posture for a singer that is playing guitar? would you just stand up and play and have a straight back (good posture) or is there a different way?
I've been in choirs for years. I still have trouble with the breathing. I can't seem to get a deep breath with my diaphragm. What could I do to improve on this?
No this is incorrect. It shows that you are tensing your tummy muscles which is not what this is about. Try to relax and let go of your abs and just let your tummy expand out like a balloon
hi Kerri, for the breathing exercises, i don't know what it is, but every time I reach four or more, for some reason my stomach refuses to open and actually causes pain to my abdomen. Is that a strain? and is there any way I can obtain a deeper, natural breath? ,
oh, thanks for your warm appreciation, Mary Luz!
Thank you! Ok, will put down your requests for possibilities for future videos... good luck!

Confidence simply takes time and experience. No I haven't done a video on that but will note it down as an idea for future
