We Purchased a Chicken Coop for our Ducks!

  • 2023 Update: The original tarp that came with the coop did not last a year but we did replace it with a sturdier one. We thought we were going to move so in preparation of selling the house, we adopted off our Ducks to a great family. We ended up staying where we live and re-assembled the enclosure and made a garden inside of it to use as a way to keep birds from eating our veggies. The only modification i made during the re-assembly part was i drilled holes in the bottom of the feet of the coop because they collected water and were rusting out quicker than the rest of the steel. Other than that, the coop is still holding up!
    We recently purchased a chicken/duck coop off Amazon and I recorded a video of it to include in an Amazon review to help other buyers on Amazon. I am posting it here along with some added information at the end to hopefully help out others looking for an easy-to-build chicken/duck coop.
    The coop arrived really quickly with no missing parts and was delivered in 3 separate boxes. The boxes weighed 68lbs, 38lbs, and 20lbs.
    Note that this coop is NOT predator proof the way it comes. In fact, the added 1/4" wire mesh we added at the bottom will not protect it from critters tunneling under it so we plan on burying cedar pickets around the perimeter to keep that from happening.

    I am planning to get a chicken coop, my mom told me that they would order it before my birthday to get it in time but that never happened. I already had the chicken coop choice but once I checked it, they were not available. My dad told me he would order it today but since it was not available, it would be hard for me to find another chicken coop that would convince me. I decided to look at chicken coop honest reviews to see if they could give me a better idea of what coops to get. None convinced me until i saw your video. Thank you for this information, i will give an update once i get this coop.

      If you end up getting this one, the only modification I would drill a 1/4" hole in the center of each foot of the coop. The feet on this one seemed to hold water some.

      This coop is defiantly for birds that have grown up some. We kept them indoors at first and let them use it as a place to roam with supervision. Even with the added wire at the bottom, it had large gaps around the door. I ended up mounting a fence picket on either side of the door. I mounted them to the vertical frame post on the inside of the coop and let them overlap the opening gap on either side of the door. It does make the opening a little smaller but it does a good job at covering the side gaps.

      @@MonkeyWoodworks I'm going to try to build a base of 2x6 and possible a lip because I think there's a gap still around the bottom. I'll have to give my birds at least 1 more month maybe less to safely not escape.

      This particular coop does have a gap. That's another reason why i added the wire cloth around it so it will go all the way to the ground.

      @@MonkeyWoodworks Thank you for this review 🙂 🙏 very well done. I just wanted to suggest if you get a chicken coop where the inside part they go at night closes up and they can get up high , they like that , but Tractor supply has a nice coop , small but nice for like 6 chickens , but we have preditors that would get into there at night even with the extra mesh. I had chicken coops that had wire yard on it and I think it was a ground hog type amimal , they have very sharp teeth it actually cut the wire on my other chicken coop to get in but I only had a cat in there who escaped unharmed thankfully . But if you get a chicken coop that closes them up night nothing can get in there to harm them and they will feel safer. Home Depot has the one I have it's only 300.00 but it's very secure for at night . Just a suggestion . I live in Iowa and we have a lot of preditors here. Once they know there is a chicken in the area they stop at nothing to try and get it. That's what I want to do anyway a walkin cage like yours , supper nice 👍 and then a chicken coop inside to lock them in at night . The walk in coop like yours will be so perfect to keep the hawks at bay. But anyway just wanted to bring this up. Thank you so much for this review so appreciated . @@MonkeyWoodworks The ground hog type animal , I forget the nane of them but they are big and they come out during the day , well gardens evidently attract them . I had been seeing one in my yard so I Google it and there was a story on the internet ( I googled are they dangerous ) and one lady said " yes absolutely , her dog was after it barking and it cut her dogs juggker , killed it. So when I came out and found my cat outside the chicken coop it took me few days to register it but then I dawned on me that Animal I read about , went out and checked and sure enough the wire mesh was cut open. I just know it was that critter, reminds me of a ground hog but much bigger and razor sharp teeth. We have wolverines here too. Very dangerous animal even to humans. . Thank you so much 🙏💖🙂👍

    I would put the tarp under the mesh to help stop wind fraying of the tarp..maybe even drive some rebar stakes angled to form a x over bottom rail to help keep wind from getting under tarp and lifting it up possibly turning it over ..wind under a tarp acts like a sail

    • @MonkeyWoodworks
      @MonkeyWoodworks  6 місяців тому +1

      I anchored it down using a similar method. For the tarp, putting it on the inside isn't a bad idea as long as you can support it from sagging and collecting rain water.

      Great idea. I ended up mounting a fence picket on either side of the door. I mounted them to the vertical frame post on the inside of the coop and let them overlap the opening gap. It does make the opening that much smaller but it does a good job at covering the gap and keeps the door straight since it closes against the boards when closed.

  • @TheRoot500
    @TheRoot500 2 роки тому

    On the front door side as well as the back stand your roll of chicken wire vertically and roll out horizontally and you won’t have to patch in 3 pieces like this guy says to do, it will be more secure and less work. Attach zip ties to the door and frame before cutting out the door to open.

    • @MonkeyWoodworks
      @MonkeyWoodworks  2 роки тому +2

      You can roll the wire horizontally however the roll that comes with the kit is not wide enough to reach the top so even if you roll it horizontal, you still have to splice it. It will be much easier to splice at a frame vs out in the open horizontally across the roof as well. I also think that it will be much easier to roll it out vertically vs horizontally because that roll is quite heavy. As you suggested with the zip ties, that is exactly how I did it. I rolled it out first, zip tied the wire to the frame/door/etc., then I cut out the door opening and the wire remained nice and tight.

    Thank you so much. Great review . Just an FYI to your viewers, if you have any preditors problems at night , racoons ect you have to put an enclosed coop inside , one you can close up at night because preditors will stop at nothing to get in and get your birds. Not sure about how ducks are but chickens will automatically go in at night then you can close the door up so nothing can get in. I love this chicken run , looks very nice and this man did a great job of reviewing it. Thank you so much. Putting you on my home screen so when I'm ready I think I want this one. If you can support it enough, yes it is possible. When we move ours, i step into the door and lift up one side by myself while my wife and son get the other side. All of the pieces lock together and is a fairly solid piece when assembled. The only flimsy part would be the middle section across the width of it. Nothing a temporary pipe or 2x4 can't handle.

    • @MonkeyWoodworks
      @MonkeyWoodworks  2 роки тому

      Yes they can. You would have to overlap the wire at the door location to cover up the gaps. Trouble is at the hinge side of the door, that will be a bit more tricky to block. Unless you can manage to overlap at the backside of the door at the hinge side. In our case, we didn't worry about it too much since we do not have critters like that near us.
