  • We replaced our temporary chicken coop with this Producers Pride Sentinel chicken Coop we have one chicken that gets picked on and she needs to be kept separate from the flock. We Chose this Coop because the quality seems to be a little better than the other ones we had checked out. We modified this one to suit our needs as we have predators and rodents And have to make adjustments accordingly. We hope this video helps anybody doing research into getting a chicken coop for their hens🐔.

Thank you for the video on this coop. I need to get a small pre-fab coop to use as a brooder or a place to isolate a sick chicken. I have a nice, big, custom built coop, but there is no where to put a brooder in it. Most pre-fab coops are crap, but this one looks a bit more substantial than most. I was thinking of covering it with a tarp when not in use so it doesn't get exposed to the elements so much. I am going to wait a while to purchase one as I want to see if they have any sales later in the year. I can dream.

I just bought one of these... the parts did not fit together well. I had to make a lot of adjustments. The door hinges are weak, and you're right about the raccoons. I glued my ridge plate on.
I had the same problem with the nest box door hinge. Also, already the rolled roof coverings are wearing off. Not great quality IMHO, wouldn't buy another, and I'm going to build a real coop soon to my own design.
I'm using it now as an older chick day house. Thanks for the video.

      Jeanette,
Thanks for the comment! It seems these days that everything you purchase needs to be modified or upgraded.... There is no quality control and cheap parts are used. We also use this coop as a place for hens that need to be separated. We have a larger coop that I designed and built, hopefully soon I will have time to share a short video on it. We always try to use locally made and fabricated products. This is not always possible so we make due with the lesser of all evils and modify.... More quality products need to be designed and made closer to home! 😎 keep us updated on your progress and any mod ideas you may have.

Just got mine set up. Our 8 week old chicks will go in full time tomorrow since the temps are getting better. What material do you use inside the coop in the run and how often do you rake out or clean the run? I have drilled holes in the doors and added a lockable latch. I hope you’ll keep us updated on any additional mods. Thanks again.

      Joseph,
Sounds like you're getting it done! We actually use potting soil for the run. We do this because we have a garden and reuse the soil in the garden. We rake it out and change it depending on the conditions like weather and the amount of time the girls spend outside. Give or take about Once a month we rake the top debris off and break up the dirt below that and add a little more to make up for what we removed. And about every six months we change it out completely. For more ideas check out the video I made on the coop I made called custom chicken coop.

The metal mesh and some spot welds were rubbing on the bottom of the tray. I took a file and filed the welds down and used end cutters to nip the ends of the mesh off. Look on the bottom of your tray and you should see scratch marks indicating where yours is rubbing then nip and file until you have better clearance . Hope this helps !

Thanks for this video! We just built this coop and need to secure it further. Would you say that the mesh underneath the coop is ok on their feet? We thought of this but weren't sure if they would get their nails stuck. We would just have grass under the coop run and maybe some mulch but their daily grazing will be mainly in a separate tractor.

We have composted soil from our garden and yard clippings that is about four inches deep to peck and scratch in. The 1/4 mesh at the bottom also allows insects and bugs to make their way in as a tasty treat while keeping mice and rats out. We let our girls out to free range the yard also. We change the soil every month or so and it goes right back into the garden. (great naturally fertilized soil by the way) We haven't had any issues with with feet as the soil is on top of the mesh. Tractors are a great option too.

      @ocotillooutlaws4101  3 роки тому

      Hey Spike!
That is a good option for being able to relocate based on your girls needs. The design of this coop is meant to be stationary but with some modifications and reinforcement in the right areas it should be movable with wheels on one end and a little help from a friend. Also if you place soil in or on the screened area this may be to much weight and cause the bottom to break out when lifted and moved. You would have to remove all the soil before moving. A guess of about 100 to 120 pounds for the weight. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question!

Hi! I have the same one and next week we are hoping to move our chickens into it. My concern is the latches, which you mentioned. I don't have a good mind for visualizing handy-man type stuff like this, so can you tell me what you had in mind to fix the latch situation to keep raccoons and such out? A new latch makes sense but because there's two doors, metal, wood, like just the layout of the thing makes it hard for me to figure out what kind of new latch would even fit or work well on this. We have two now and will be adding a third soon. They are small hens. Four large breed hens will be tight. Although the coop states it will house five hens, for the girls sake I would not put more than four in this coop. Also take in consideration the area you are located and add more ventilation to promote airflow and removal of ammonia fumes from droppings. The more hens the more frequently the coop should be cleaned. So yes as long as they have added ventilation more frequent coop cleaning and let them out to free range a little if you can. Hope this helps 😀

I had never had chickens before so I didn’t have a clue how important ventilation was, until we found them with there mouths open and I had studied enough to know that they were in trouble. My husband took a hole saw and added 4 holes on each side. When it started getting hotter he ended up taking the back clean out door off (you may can just drop it down) and filled that whole opening with 1/4” hard wire cloth. When it rained we just put a small brown tarp over half of the top with a couple of bricks to hold it on. I hope that this helps. It got so hot that we had 2 picnic table umbrellas over the top, and 4 fans with jugs of ice for the fans to blow on, they laid in front of the fans with their feathers blowing. They looked like they were in a photo shoot. We are so in love with them that they now have a 4x8 coop and a 24’ x 8’ run. My husband built it out of old business signs that a sign business gave us just to haul them off. He covered their run with them also. We got the wood from construction building site dumpsters. All we had to buy was the black 1/2” hard wire cloth. It is the best chicken coop that I have ever seen🙏❤️. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I am just learning as I go. 😁

You should have 1sq foot of vent opening per chicken. In the future if we add more hens we will add venting in the coop to create a good crossflow of air. Depending on your climate and weather, the type of bedding used and keeping a clean coop can help with poor ventilation issues by preventing build up of ammonia gasses and moisture from the droppings. John,
Thanks for the question they all may differ a little but I measured mine and it is 36.5" x 75.6/8 I built my base 36.5/8 x 76.0" this worked for my application. The part that the nesting box is over is slightly narrower than the rest of the coop it is 35.1/4 wide. You can also use 4x4's to give yourself a little extra play room. However, have some reservations about this coop - and hesitating at the moment. BTW wood in direct contact with the ground - voids my Termite Contract on my house and that would in turn void my Home Owners. So I will with have to do some kind of cap block or pavers and then the wood, etc.... the wire of course can go below all this and sand can cover it etc... may go pavers and cap block cheaper. Bit the bullet - but will seal and paint it before assembly and got the 8 x 8 run too and used hardware cloth and pavers for the predator base - and working the predator base outward from the 8x8 run and putting the coop inside and using Cap Block for the coop base. we will see how this costly experiment works - I do not want to have to try to rebuy in a few years, as I see so many people do. Matt,
Thanks for the question ! To make six hens healthy and happy in this size coop is going to be a challenge . I personally felt that three hens for this size run and room inside the coop was just about right any more and it would be cramped. It can definitely be done. Do you free range the girls during the day? If not a larger run on the outside would be needed as each chicken needs about 15 sqft of space to roam and additional roosting space would be necessary. Ventilation also is a consideration as each hen should have about one sqft of ventilation each. Meaning you would need to locate areas to add openings for this. We will be doing this as we will be adding two additional hens. So yes you can make this work with modifications and some reengineering. Depending on your situation, the other options are to research another larger coop or to custom build your own to suit your needs. If there is an interest I will do a video on the coop that I custom built in the future. Hope this helps and keep us posted on your progress!

Pss,. On the bigger Chicken Coop you need a modification and how the front part is designed but what you also need is the round sticks that look like poles that you put in the closet and you put chains and nails in to make swinging swings for the birds yes and you can take the same poles and put purchase also for the birds yes on the bigger ones and for your feeding law for them you can get your PVC that's long shoot out of your chicken coop and fill it to the top and screw on a cap and put your feet through that with water that goes down long yes and you can keep a bucket of feed on the side yeah and that would be good for your older chickens and if you also have a pen for rabbits yes and I think you can also put little pigs in the older pen yes and you can also sell yes, and don't forget the smaller pan that you're designing with the six animals for the chicken pen could be used with two rabbits and one male rabbit because you have three slots I would go three rabbits and one male rabbit and for the second one on that smaller Coop because you can have six animals right yes if you wanted to race two turkeys you could because he said you could hold six animals you take away the mama bird and the papa bird and the baby usually has four to two turkeys you know little turkeys or maybe they have three but the coop can grow with the family and as the siblings grow up and you can choose which one you would you know sacrifice for the food you know but if you don't need to eat them you can just use their eggs that would also be great and also the smaller pen would also be good for ducks also yes and with ducks see what also start off with four and a male or three it just depends because you have six animals and you want just to grow a little family to start off with yeah, and to make sure that you can also protect the outer layer of the cage offer plastic that you can't see through the white Carpenter plastic and some Thai strings to the customer fit it to around your cage for winter protection yes and from predators yes as an extra package to your cage for a small fee yes and then offer the customers free delivery yes, neighbors liked it know what you're working on in the garden yes, and for the bigger caged to introduce them to the adults you can also put in baby swimming pools for the pigs yes to design in there yes and they can play in like a mud hay kind of pen for them yeah and then with your PVC pipe coming down for the pigs food or you can make an old fashioned trough off I would think one of those old fashioned gas cans that you cut in half yeah you can use one half for water and the other half for its hay with its feed you know that's just a thought and or you can use those blue water containers and slice it in half and what is for water and the other one is to feed the pig with and it could be put in that pen that is the larger rooster chicken pen yes I would only raise two, yes, so that might be something you might look into some of your designs to add in yes 🧘👍🕯️✝️🤝🙏🌈✨🌟✨🌄✨💟💟🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🎇🎇🎆🎆💌💖💖✨
