In this scene, Makishima is transformed from a character in a work of fiction into something approaching a genuine human being with all their quirks and particularities. Unlike plenty of superfluous character details in other fictional works, Makishima's little rant about paperbacks vs. e-books is something that is simultaneously entirely irrelevant to the plot but which fits what we so far understand about the character and his motivations so incredibly well that his motivations as a villain become so much more believable as a consequence. Of course Makishima, who speaks so often of how SIBYL robs people of genuine human experiences, would value the multi-sensory experience of reading a paperback to the completely practical but emotionally stale experience of reading an e-book. It has left me hooked and relieved some headaches I had reading off the computer. In a way, it has helped me to replenish my attention and state of mind.
It's been a while since I took in Psycho Pass, but what amazes me is the depth of Makishima. From the way he's viewed by Sibyl, he's "normal". His emotions are as they should be, or they're outside of what Sibyl can consider. He can ruthlessly murder someone without having a change to his Pass, but the interesting thing is that Makishima is anything but emotionless. He's the opposite, -- he's more like someone who has integrated his shadow and understand who he is and how he feels and why. He's much like Black Reaper Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul, -- he displays emotions, even if the way he displays them are controlled. Watching this made me realize that Makishima isn't a machine. He's the opposite, he's a genuine human being. The reason he chose not to ally with Sibyl and receive a cyborg body is because of those tactile senses, emotions and everything that makes him human. Without them, he would not be him. The reference to Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Blade Runner illustrate the nuances of what goes on in Makishima's head, and shows just how varied he is in what he consumes.
Physical books have a hold on you that e-books don't. I really relate to Shogo. Urobuchi even described him as someone who could've tried to find happiness had he been born into a normal world; a lot of the time, I feel that's me
Fittingly, that actually plays into a core part of what makes Makishima such a compelling antagonist; he's undoubtedly a monster, but he has a raw charisma that's impossible to deny.
He's a great antagonist! Perhaps you meant do awful things? I agree with his thoughts on Society just not his methods. But without him, this anime won't be worth a watch. I think that Makishima's the most well executed aspect in this anime, except for his plot armor. It's kind of a shame thar with such a great idea like this, it could've been executed to perfection (especially the main character and her police group, the second half of the anime, and season 2!). That's why I prefer Madoka Magica and Fate Zero over than this.
@@praisethelordgriffith8338 I have seen the show, it's been years since I made that comment. And I do agree that he is the best part of the show all though that is because everyone in the this show are a bunch of weirdos. I can respect Makisima for trying to getting a rid of a system as stupid as Cybil. Which is funny because I can connect to a psycho like Makisima over everyone else in the cast because at least he's honest about who is while Akane just sits by and let's a system as corrupt and as stupid as Cybil go by and thinks that they will eventually be put to light. Fate Zero is definitely better and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Texholyze and Planetes are also better.
@@civilwarfare101 Cool you replied! I actually didn't continue the anime cause I'm not that much interested in the cast, only Makishima. I prefer characters over plot, and if they ain't that interesting and fascinating then I'd get bored. And mostly because Urobochi wrote the first season, not the rest. It'll just be the police guys reforming the system, there, the end's predictable. One aspect about Psycho-Pass too that I adore is thst it's thought-provoking. Just thst there are other anime which are the same with great characters! Examples of this are Fate Zero, FMAB, HxH, and the manga Berserk.
@@praisethelordgriffith8338 I only watched S1 too. I heard bad things about S2. I reccomend the Psycho Pass movie, its written by Urobuchi but is more action focused which is a good thing to me. The action was great in S1 and Production IG shows in general. I think plot and characters are equally as important. I am more of a characters guy but I want a plot as well. Maybe but it feels like the story is directionless especially what I can tell from the movie. I find there's other anime more thought provoking like Serial Experiments Lain, Texholyze, Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex, Monster, FMA 2003, Gungrave, and Samurai X Trust and Betryal. I find FMAB and HxH to be alright the latter only having two arcs I like. I haven't read manga Berserk. Fate Zero was the best show you listen though.
Bladerunner is the movie he was talking about if anyone was curious. Philip K. Dick short stories and novels inspired or were directly adapted to a laundry list of Sci-Fi classics
I love this, I didn't watch the subbed version but i think this is a paragon of how even dubbed can be awesome. God i hate his character but still cant love at the same time
I prefer the sub simply because I watched it first, but I'm impressed with the dub. They chose the characters well. :) I also love paper books more than Ebooks, but however you read doesn't matter. Simply that you read does.
I've always preferred a real book as opposed to anything else. To stack the books, organize them, love them, smell them. To just take it all in- a life in your hands. It's great.
I agree with Makishima, I love holding the good old paperback; gives everything a weight, and I sometime feel that you can actually see the effort put into the book itself; the design, the cover.... Not saying E-books are bad or anything, but I like holding and flipping the pages
I agree too, but I am not very sure about his explanation. I have read both physical books and e-books. Somehow, reading an e-book felt very difficult, as if something major was lacking. Even true with physical Bibles and Bible mobile applications. Funny thing, it did not feel that way after I printed out that e-book and read it as a physical one. Funnier still, it was a botany textbook.
Same. I mostly don't like ebooks because they hurt your eyes, but it's far more convenient than paperbacks since they don't cost that much. Nowaways you can find any book you want on the internet, and it's cheaper than their paperback version.
Skeptic Agnostic Well...I got this off Anime News Network but he voiced as Togusa in Ghost in the Shell: Arise and Sir Zechs Lucifer in High School DxD
The back thing about paperback are those 2 instances of smell, when you pick up a book from the shelf and when you open it. Once the smell of the pages gets to your brain, you simply cannot resist the urge of reading the book. Remember when once I picked up a 800 pages book (little smaller than A4) and read it all in one sitting due to that amazing sensation. You literally cannot put away the book unless interrupted lol.
“Why don’t you buy paper books?” -Shogo Makishima That quote above my bookshelf reminds me to read more and buy books I enjoy since there’s a value in it. I do, I do, just not often now since I’m so busy
He is not a vilain but an anti heroes to Sybil system. But in normal humanity, he is just a bibliography genius dude that always loves books and humane. So this system is none other just a tools for him not to take over his life.
Now that I think about it I think the madeleine he sinks in his tea is a reference to Marcel Proust's " à la recherche du temps perdu". Makishima is reminicent of the past, the Proust reference makes sense. Damn I didn't catch that 6 years ago..

Shougo is an Anti-Hero in my opinion, yet he's classified as an Anti-Villain. Was Neo a villain? When he attempted to destroy the Matrix? No, he was considered a Hero.
I love seeing Shogo chewing at 0:35 it’s so cute and hearing him say no at 0:54 😍it reminds me of the way that 1 guy says no in episode 8 of Guilty crown
See 1:38 (he does this a lot especially when he is giving 40 second monologues) Is not making eye contact with someone, like Makishima does, when speaking your thoughts in a private conversation rude? It really does help with articulating the thoughts. He does however make eye contact when the other person speaks however which makes it seem like he is attentive, “tuned” in and this is polite. Is not making eye contact when you are speaking ok? If so, would you still do such a thing in a formal setting like a job interview when being questioned?
Urgh I hate these sub fan boys. Believe or not, there are good dubs to anime and this is not an exception. Makishima was portrayed excellently in the dub.
In the sub I can feel how resentful Makishima is of the world he leaves in everytime he speaks and that suits him well as he's always openly and truly expressing himself. In the dub,... I can hear a generic psycho. Huh.
As someone who always tries to give both versions a fair shake, and has found some dubs enjoyable, I felt Makishima's VA was far too corny in this particular case. Psycho Pass deserves to be watched subbed.
Kermit F Psycho-Pass is not one of those dubs. I love the FMAB dub. I love the My Hero Academia dub. Even the Erased dub has some pretty solid work put behind it. But I simply can't stand Psycho-Pass' dub. Multiple characters sound like they're barely trying to act.
Yeah Makisima's voice is pretty good. I don't get the hate at all. I mean shit not like you can understand voice acting in Japanense. You are just reading the bottom two inches of the screen.

just plus who got to read the "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" after that : D
Hell, I even got a physical copy
This is one of the moments which always reminds me of why I like this character a lot. Makishima is very unique.
I sympathize with him and strive to be like him.
It's been 4 years...how many books have you read?
He is a Dark humanist so be careful with that
Minus the murdering part right? XD
@@jerryhu9005*stares in anakin*
Physical books have a hold on you that e-books don't.
I really relate to Shogo. Urobuchi even described him as someone who could've tried to find happiness had he been born into a normal world; a lot of the time, I feel that's me
do androids dream of electric sheep yaay
and blade runner is the old movie mentioned by Choe gu-Sung.
It's a classic
One of the few villains who make good arguments for free will.
YES. GETTING ALL THE BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS-
It's a true classic
I heard so many awful things about this character but this guy's dub voice makes me want to like him.
@@praisethelordgriffith8338
I have seen the show, it's been years since I made that comment.
@@praisethelordgriffith8338
I only watched S1 too.
These two guys are the realest on the show -2020 vibes
Basically this guy is literally Anime Ted Kazinsky
I love this, I didn't watch the subbed version but i think this is a paragon of how even dubbed can be awesome. God i hate his character but still cant love at the same time
Best speech about books I have ever heard.
It's great.
do androids dream of electric sheep?
blade runner

sprawl trilogy
Ooooooooyeah, evil bro: you've taste! :D
And…suddenly I want to rewatch psycho pass
Thank you very much 🤍
I love makashima this was one of Alex organs best character performances he parallels with griffith from berserk
Shogos voice is nice to listen to 😍
I agree with Makishima, I love holding the good old paperback; gives everything a weight, and I sometime feel that you can actually see the effort put into the book itself; the design, the cover....
What a heavenly voice..
Well, I'm gonna take a book suggestion from Makishima
Oh Alex organ, you could read a phonebook and I'd be entranced. Only Crispin Freeman and Morgan Freeman can do that to me.
One of the best English dubbed characters
I sorely wish that Alex Organ would do Voice Work again.
He was the Highlight of Pycho Pass' dub for me as Shogo.
Makaschima one of the best villans in anime
Good job Alex Organ, even though I've never heard your dubs till this one
It's the official dub.
Skeptic Agnostic I know, I'm saying that I haven't watched other anime he's voiced in(cause I think he's fairly new).
Elsiya The voice actor voiced in another anime. Which one?
Skeptic Agnostic Well...I got this off Anime News Network but he voiced as Togusa in Ghost in the Shell: Arise and Sir Zechs Lucifer in High School DxD
Skeptic Agnostic Oh and Kaku from One Piece
I love this villian 😮
"villain"
Antagonist is a better word
Cmon I mean I do like him but he did like, commit genocide
Top 3 all time villains right here
Think he's one of the best I've seen tbh i was rooting for him all the way
NO
HE IS THE BEST
I LOVE THIS CHARACTER SO MUCH.
I just realised i do the same "dunk it in the tea" thing Shogo does.
Shame Makashima didn’t see Bladerunner 2049. He’d have loved it.
This conversation was deep and intellectual.... but all I want is contact lenses of the hacker guy
I believe they are artificial eyes.
First time listening to the dub, but HOLY SHIT its GOOD
Flow My Tears The Policeman Said
That old movie he mentioned
He is referring to blade runner
I hope I can meet a guy like this
Me too. But those closest to this made up character usually lack either his knowledge or his charisma.
be careful....he might end up being a sociopath and just end up using you for entertainment purposes
I wish he's in real life and have someone interview him about anything. I find his wisdom enticing.
We need more of such thoughtful and long lines dialogues in our world.
Anyone appreciating the background music? It's magnificient
“Why don’t you buy paper books?” -Shogo Makishima
That quote above my bookshelf reminds me to read more and buy books I enjoy since there’s a value in it. I do, I do, just not often now since I’m so busy
I like the ominous music when he's discussing e book v paperback LOL 😂
I never heard if this anime before but I'm about to watch it.
No one is talking about Gu Sung Choe..
his eyes are amazing
Yeah... Moments like this are why we love Makishima...
Damn. Someone finally put it into words.
Dang, this man explained why I like physical books more than I ever could myself.
Hey which one do you mean?
There are 6 parts,
The 7th part cannot be it, 'cause is called something else

Thank you for the tip and heads up about this book
Just watched and finished this today and this was my favorite scene
Couldn't agree more with this man
How NOT to love him?
Oh, I can hear his theme on the background.... OH SH--T, WHY I LOVE THIS MAN SO MUCH? JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THIS EYES, THIS HAIR, THIS SKIN, THIS MOVEMENTS -faints-
(Somehow, he reminds me of L... But it has nothing to do with my respect for him)
Shougo is an Anti-Hero in my opinion, yet he's classified as an Anti-Villain.
Was Neo a villain? When he attempted to destroy the Matrix? No, he was considered a Hero.
Do you k ow the difference of anti hero and anti villain?
I've said it before and I'll say it always..one of the most intricate n hot villians ever
This guy should rule the whole world
I love how this guy also voices sirzechs in highschool dxd season 1-3
Urgh I hate these sub fan boys. Believe or not, there are good dubs to anime and this is not an exception. Makishima was portrayed excellently in the dub.
100% agree. I say the same for L in Death Note. His dubbed was always calm, and neutral. It's nice.
He wasn’t wrong I read the book. It’s very different from the movie.
I loved both bladerunner movies and am about to read the book now so I’m excited for how it’ll turn out
I suppose we could say he’s a man of the people
well that itachi guy didnt disappoint Makishima like all the others
So what is the name of this music track? It is one of my favorite scenes of all time and I must have the music.
Makishima's theme
When I returned to reading physical books. I cant help but agree. My brain is more stimulated reading from a physical copy than a digital one and I absorb more of the story as well
If Makashima was a real person, I'll recommend books for him to read.
