  • Learn this festive classic 'In Dulci Jubilo' by following the notes on the screen! Then play along with me until you've nailed it :)
    This is the first time I teach a tune on UA-cam in this way, and I'm curious to hear what you think! Even for advanced players, it can be great to train learning by ear or memorisation, or use it as an opportunity to throw some folky ornaments in there. Enjoy!
    //// INSTRUMENTS
    In this video I play on a 442 boxwood soprano by Mollenhauer and a 440 maple Rafi tenor by Francesco Li Virghi.

    Great fun! Brought back hilarious memories of dueting with a cassette recorder (!) when I was 12 or so. Can't imagine what the neighbors thought when I played on the front porch... I've known the tune as a Christmas carol my entire life, but instrumentally, it's just a fantastic, joyous tune that's wonderful this time of year.

    I've always loved the Mike Oldfield/Les Penning jiglike version, which I learned to play by ear 40 years ago, more or less.

    Great selection Sarah! "In Dulci Jubilo" ("In Sweet Rejoicing") is also to the 1853 English version of "Good Christian Men Rejoice" by John Mason Neale. Because of it's 14th century melody, this arrangement really complements the vagaries of the venerable recorder and its medieval roots. Another festive tune on the recorder for the holidays is, among many, the English traditional carol: "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen." Congratulations on your second anniversary of "Team Recorder," and happy holidays to you and yours! 😊 ♫ 🎄❄

    Hi , this is Wylie from Hong Kong, i like your channel, i just discover your channel last night , and i spend 3hr today to watch it. i really like you. In HK, the recorder is not the most popular instrument for long term studying, so the learning material is quite little in the music shop. So, it is very enjoy to watch your video and make me feel the recorder is great than i imagine. i start to lean the Alto recorder half year, i will continuous learn skill from you. Thank you.

    In *dulci iubilo*/ nun singet und seid froh!/ Euers Herzens Wonne/ leit *in prasepio*/ und leuchtet als die Sonne/ *matris in gremio*./*Alpha es et O*.
    O Iesu parvule*,/ nach dir ist mir so weh!/ Tröst mir mein Gemüte/.*o puer optime*/ durch alle deine Güte/ .*o princeps gloriae*,/ .*trahe me post te!*
    *Ubi sunt gaudia?*/ Nirgend mehr denn da,/ da die Engel singen/ *nova cantica*/ und die Schellen klingen/ *in regis curia*./ Eia, wär'n wir da!
    (The song is mixed Early Modern German and Latin. I wrote the Latin in between *.)
    Translation:
    With delicate joy/ now sing and be merry!/ Your heart's delight/ lies in a manger/ and shines like the sun/ in the lap of his mother. /You're Alpha and Omega. (=beginning and end)
    O little Jesus/ my heart longs so much for you!/ Comfort my mind,/ o best boy,/ through all your kindness,/ o prince of glory./ Draw me after you(?)!
    Where are the joys?/ No place than there,/ where the angels sing/ new songs/ and the bells sound/ at the court of the king./ Ay, if we'd be there!

    Thanks for posting this -- it's a great little tune for Christmas! I do have one suggestion however for beginning _alto_ players:
    If you try to play this on the alto as it is presented, you'll have to play one octave up due to the low E that appears in the piece. On an F alto, that's unplayable. Of course it's playable at the same pitch as the soprano (one octave higher), but almost all the notes will then need to be played in the upper register. A much easier way to play it as a solo alto piece is to *transpose it up a fourth* (5 semitones) into the key of C, rather than G. That way, almost all the notes fall into the lower register of your alto (ranging from low A to A), and there are NO sharps or flats! This makes it really easy to play, and since it will sound a fifth lower than the version in G, it also sounds better, I think.

    There are channels doing it similar way for anime songs and such, but most are either just sound which I suspect is just midi, or players, but who are not always very good. While I cannot complain about them, they do it great and the more melodies covered the better, it is good to have this with your level of skill ^_^
    But for me, as a complete noob, having picked up the recorder last week, and never playing anything before it is quite challenging to play this way 😅 I have big difficulties with rhythm, and figuring it out by ear is very difficult 😅 If you could drop the sheet music after all it would be much appreciated. Though if you don't it is still fine, I have to learn to play like this eventually, and I am just at the very beginning of my path xD

    Love this video; please do more in this style. Sarah, I am returning to the recorder after decades++ away, and I am alternating between S,A, and T. My fingers don't seem to recall where they should fall over their respective holes. In this early learning stage, should I only play one instrument until my muscle memory is not impeded when switching between instruments? Or is it better to keep changing between them in hopes that my fingers will behave properly when I pick up each instrument? Thank you.

      +Carol Westlake Hi Carol, there's no hard and fast rule- find what works best for you! It could be worth taking it (for example) a few weeks at a time- giving yourself time to concetrate and progress on each size of recorder, but changing every so often to keep it going. Let me know how you get on!

    Love this! Thanks for breaking it down simply and then riffing on it!
    Question... how might you approach playing a solo accompaniment for other instruments without sheet music?
    I play in an ukulele group (we play songs from 1920s-present, some Hawaiian, most not). Some other of our musicians have played solos on melodica, flute, trumpet, and clarinet. Maybe one day I could play a solo part on recorder!
    The solo doesn't have to be FOR recorder, but anything fun, modernish, and has lyrics.
    Thanks!

    Very fun to play along with you! I found the notations helpful, but when they disappeared half way through, my playing ground to a halt because the tune had not yet seeped into my brain and fingers! (I have always been astonished that some people internalize pieces after one or two hearings... but after years of musical practice, I have come to accept that I am not one of those people!) Next time I try to play along, I will start and stop the recording as often as I need to.

After many times through I am starting to get the hang of it and now am not intimidated by trying to play faster. it also really taught me that I do not need as much air as I thought, just to focus it more. and breath support! Wow . When I play fast I can really set the support and then concentrate on the fingers. So much fun to play with the soundtrack and the 2 Sarahs backing me up. ; ) . • @honeychurchgipsy6
      @honeychurchgipsy6 6 років тому

      Jack Young - go to the Saunders Recorders website - he gives good reviews and isn't snobby about plastic versus wood. The Adris dream are available in plastic by Mollenhauer or the Aulos or Yamaha are good - don't go for the cheapest model with the Aulos and Yamaha though - I bought the Aulos 205A recently - think it's the 'Robin' - I really like it. they do some good trebles too.

      @Merel-fb2uu 6 років тому

      I have an Aulos Haka soprano and alto and highly recommend them! I've been playing In Dulci Jubilo throughout the day hahahaha. There are sound samples on the website mentioned bij honeychurchgipsy6 so have a listen. I also really love my Dolmetsch Nova, I only have the alto though and not the soprano. Happy playing!

    • @honeychurchgipsy6
      @honeychurchgipsy6 6 років тому

      Merel 1379 - my Aulos alto is only the really basic one - I've been thinking about the Haka one as I can't always be bothered to warm up, clean afterwards etc my Moeck Rottenburgh (very lazy of me!) and would like something a bit better sounding. The little Aulos sopranino - same range I think as the haka - is brilliant - far better than the Yamaha - the way it is made is phenomenally good for the price and even the case is quite good.

    • @gabrielvieira9832
      @gabrielvieira9832 6 років тому +1

      The first notes she uses the letters to represent the notes c d e f g a s
      And the line down in the screen she uses the sounds that maybe is for another language do (c) re (d) mi (e) fa (f) sol (g) la (a) ti (b - si in my language).
      If doesn't work now is because you are using a recorder with a different tune than soprano, like alto, sopranino, bass...

      +Luca Simoncini Exactly! In the Netherlands we use 'b a g' but for example in Belgium it's 'do re mi'- trying to be inclusive ;)

      Dat krijg je een klein beetje op de 5e herhaling, waar het deuntje stopt en alleen het extra partijtje doorgaat ;)

    The german fingering for F sharp is actually your three fingers at the bottom (pinky, ring, middle)

      Hi Sarah! I am a hobby recorder player! Glad to see enthusiast recorder player like you. I like to play recorder very much, but here they treat classical music so bad haha, greeting from Indonesia (if u know what country is it)

    This is a cool idea but maybe you should pick a Christmas tune people have actually heard before.

      Hi Rob! A few points on choosing repertoire for this channel:
      - anything modern/pop has copyright issues, ruling out my first choice which OBVIOUSLY would be Mariah Carey's 'All I want for christmas is you'

      Very odd. I posted about this and out of 1000 friends on social media, literally nobody I know has ever heard this tune, or even heard of it. Sure I like learning (and writing) new music, but I am thinking this song is only known in Europe (although none of my European friends have heard of it either?). Oh well. I am playing well-known pieces in the public domain. :-)
