I am proud to write that I was at this historic game which gave Utd their 1st & only European Super Cup victory, I stood in the Stretford End above the middle tunnel & still remember how Red Stars Number 10 Sasicevic gave one of the greatest performances I've ever seen for a player & I've watched Zidane, both Ronaldos, Ronaldinho, Del Piero amongst many others, Rivaldo in the 98 /99 ECL Barca away game & Messi in the 07/08 Champions league semi final match at Old Trafford both spring to mind as these 3 players turned Utd over. What a player I'm privileged to have watched plsy real mens football. Regards, David from Manchester, England, UK.

Thank you for your kind words. *Savićević. I feel privileged too, for a chance to see this team, few weeks before winning Champions Cup in 1991. That was my first time to go to stadium, I was 11 in 1991. Boris from Belgrade, Serbia

Credit where credit is due, It was one of the greatest performances from the player I have ever seen, I would've been 16 or 17 at that game & Can still recall it to this very day. No wonder AC Milan signed him for big money , This player would be worth Hundreds of millions in today's market. Manchester United and Red Star Belgrade have always had a close relationship Due to that historic night in 1958, If the War hadn't started in old Yugoslavia I honestly believe this Red star team would have went on to win a lot more European cups The same as the Busby Babes wouldve undoubtedly went on to do. Kindest regards David from Manchester England UK

I hope you are well my friend, Sir Alex Ferguson isn't wrong in saying that because Red Star Belgrade & Man of the match Savicevic were Absolutely unstoppable & It was no surprise that we were playing the European cup champions, It is a game I was honoured to have attended & Savicevic gave one of the best performances I have seen Still to this day. I bought myself a Red Star Belgrade shirt the other month just for the respect because of this game and the Munich air tragedy. .

We were absolutely annihilated that night, they could have been 5-0 up at half-time, Sir Alex says "The entire Red Star side was terrific. Dejan Savicevic, Darko Pancev, Robert Prosinecki, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Vladimir Jugovic, all brilliant players.

Highlights don't show it, but Red Star battered United, they just couldn't score. Savicevic was outstanding. Sir Alex Ferguson said in his autobiography, he still doesn't know how they won this game.

As somebody who was in the Stretford End for this game That is 100% correct, We got battered By one of the greatest player performances I've ever seen, Thankfully it was only one leg because If we wouldve had to of played the next lieg at their stadium then Savicevic Would have torn United apart again . Very sad to see that great team ripped apart due to war. There is a UA-cam video which shows Savicevics Magical performance that night at Old Trafford. It is a game I feel honoured and privileged to have attended. Kindest regards David from Manchester England UK

My comment above is pretty much the same as yours. Still, it bears repeating. I loved that Red Star Belgrade team. Jonathan Wilson wrote beautifully about it in his book Behind the Curtain. And not only did the war rip that team apart it also killed at birth a Yugoslavia team that could very well have gone on to win a major international trophy. They were that good. But from what I've read about the conflict it seems it was only a matter of when rather than if the country would break up. A great shame.

Very strange highlights of this game. Not a single piece featuring Dejan Savicevic, who was by far the outstanding player on the pitch that night and left Ince on his arse several times throughout the course of the game. In fact, I would say Red Star could have easily won this game if Pancev had turned up. He missed a number of clear cut chances, most of them created by Savicevic.
And nice to be reminded that Webb was once a very decent player before he slipped down the divisions.

This game was very similar to when we won the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo in '99 (I was at both games). McClair and Keano respectively with very well-taken goals against the run of play. Get in! If memory serves, there were only about 20,000 at this game, which surprised me at the time.

Very strange video edit. Seems author was only interested in MU chances. I watched the game and Red Star was better team that day. This video gives wrong impression. I am sure if UEFA allowed return leg to be played, RS would win overall. And if there was no war in Yugoslavia and Bosman rule, certainly Red Star would be among top teams for many years to come. Not only it would not need to sell Savicevic, Prosinecki, Mihajlovic and the others, but there were plans to bring in Suker, Boban, Jokanovic, and other best Yugo players.

I was at this game,I was 21 at the time. I remember how shocking the old Trafford pitch was that season, it probably cost utd the league title that year. I also remember how well red star knocked the ball about on the terrible boggy pitch. I was also quite surprised at how empty the north stand ( Alex Ferguson stand) was on rewatching this... it would be full these days🙄. I was stood behind the goal ( k stand at the time) when Bruce missed the pen.

This was a few years before football was "cool" and people like musicians and politicians started expressing their love for the game. It was the genuine supporters who showed up in those days. Still, you would imagine there'd be a good crowd there to watch one of the most stylish European Cup winning teams. Maybe it was a Corrie night.

Kindest regards David from Manchester England UK ps Only talking for myself but I certainly cared about winning the European super cup Not just because it was against the champions of Europe But it was only United's third trophy In six years or in the Fergie era With the FA Cup in 1990 & the ECWC in 91, Even though we lost out on the title to Leeds that season I Still hold that season close to my heart because not only did we win the European super cup for our first and only time but we also won the league Cup for the first time in United history & It was the last season of the Stretford End Which a certain class of players went on to win The FA youth cup in front of.

The Manchester cowards did not have the balls to play the rematch in Belgrade because of the war in Yugoslavia (there was no such thing in Belgrade and Serbia), and in fact they knew that they could hardly have a favorable result at the Marakana against the Red star, since they had, at the time, great team despite the departure of five important football players. UEFA later ruled that only one game was played in Manchester, giving the Islanders a big advantage. As always the English used their great influence off the field and got what they wanted.
This was not enough for them, so they were also allowed to play with more foreigners than the three, as was allowed at the time in the Euro Cups. Due to changing regulations and playing only one game in the European Super Cup, UEFA has also suspended the rule on three allowed foreigners, so Ferguson has sent six foreign football players from the start - Schmayhel (Denmark), Irvine (Ireland), Kanchelskis (USSR). Mackler (Scotland), Hughes and Blackmore (Wales), followed by a seventh stranger, then young Welshman Ryan Gigs. So Manchester made a precedent in European football and played with most foreigners on the team five years before Bosman's rule was enacted.
United was the average English team at the time, and Ferguson had only one FA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup win in five seasons in the Red Devils. However, after this season they began to dominate English football and became one of the best, most popular and richest clubs in the world.

pavlichenko pavlichenko - Firstly, learn to spell correctly. Secondly, Utd were a world famous club before this game in ‘91 but had been in the doldrums throughout the 70s and 80s apart from a few FA Cup wins. Utd won a European Cup before Red Star did. It appears you have a big chip on your shoulder regarding the fate of Red Star after ‘91 but this was due to ethnic tensions within Yugoslavia that destroyed the country as it was. Your conspiracy regarding “foreign” players is nonsense and UEFA were never predisposed towards English officials and clubs. The “Heysel” ban is a case in point. Red Star should have won this particular fixture but the game had no real relevance.
