Who we are:
This channel is run by Alfred and Paul. We are graduate students at Yale University. Paul is a Ph.D. student, and Alfred is a Masters student. We both have previous Masters degrees from Columbia. On this channel, we share about applying to schools, visas, living abroad as a student, and academia in general.
I got my visa yesterday as a first timer. Your tips helped me a lot now here are some of the tips I will give people here
1. American visa application is a thoughtful process. You must have how you want to do it before setting out
2. One of the most important information they require from you will be in that ds160 form. If you don't fill it very intentionally your chances will dwindle even when you stand a good chance by tweaking simple things
3.being married, having a long working history in a professional setting, a good income or at least a sponsor who has (especially if the sponsor is a professional like a surgeon or engineer), if asked to describe your job briefly you have to make it very catchy - e.g there is a difference between I sell pure water on the streets and I am the sole water distributor in my region and I ensure that there is good water supply and I ensure people don't go into dehydration),
4. On the interview day please dress well because most people that got the visa were well dressed. Don't go there in a jean and polo. First impression matters put on a shirt and trousers with or without a tie. If you wear a suit then don't put on a tie so it doesn't look like you are overdoing it. Be confident in whatever you do, look at the consult directly with a simple smile when necessary.
5. Before the interview your DS 160 will already be speaking for you. When asked a question please sound natural, sound practical and don't speak on and on and on. At least in 30 seconds you should have finished am answer or even less depending on the question. Examples
- why are going to study in xyz school - this guy went on and on and on about how he wants to come back and end terrorist insurgency in Nigeria when he is through with studies - now it's obvious that is impractical and bogus
- a lady was asked what do you do when you are not schooling and she started answering she was at it and I went in for my interview and came out and she was still answering. You can't be a student and be working harder than a full time worker.
There are so many practical things you can say
Those consules are trained at the job
The last thing the consul said to me was " your ds160 looks good and there are no issues with it .- this tells you that form is critical and you must know everything in it by heart
Lastly don't pay any agent to fill forms for you. I made that mistake and when i found out my form was actually empty I was only lucky to find that I can redo it and reupdate my profile. Which I did.

After you filled and submitted your ds160 form, when did you do your interview? A month after ? Two weeks after ?

@@atselefuntemitope6179 there is a long wait time. Nigeria for example it’s up to like 2025. First things first if you are in no hurry pick a date. Then it’s either you find an agent to give your profile log in details to get you a new date or you do it yourself by being online often checking for more recent availability. You can change your ds160 form and resubmit and update your profile 3 days before appointed interview date

I applied for uk transit visa and had my biometrics done yesterday,They asked if i av uploaded all the documents online and i told them yes i have ,After that they they collected my passport and had my biometric done without asking for any other documents. Pls does it happens lyk that

1. Do you have any immediate relatives, not including parents in the US?
2. Do you have any other relatives in the United States?
What should be the answer incase you have just a sister who you are visiting and goin to stay with ?
The truth is the best answer
If your passport is requested from the consular and you have two, will you present the two to the consular or the new one renewed
You will present a valid passport. The one which is valid

I have a c1d usa visa because I work in a cruise. But now i'm applying for a b1b2 visa. Are my chances good to be able to have a b1b2 visa. Amean I have a c1d already and been in the usa many times and never stayed or plan to. You need to figure that out. If someone is into business in ur family, you can use it and generate a document for it. Most of the time they don't even as for the document.

We had an agreement with my friend in US that he will cover 50% of my travel cost which I did not include in my DS-160 application.
I said that I will cover my travel cost in DS-160. The consular officer did not give me time to explain myself she just gave me the pink letter for refusal so my question is;
Should I indicate that I will cover my travel cost in the new application and what reason should I indicate as reason for denial?

I hope i did not come in way too late, if you say your friend will cover 50% of your travel costs it means you are broke and there is a high chance of you violating your B1/B2 visa by working. Its best to indicate your self reliant and you will cover all costs you will incur.
My question is, what was the content of the pink letter because simply mentioning pink does not answer the question as to why your visa was rejected
